Vick Accepts Plea Deal: What's Next?

Monday, August 20, 2007, 02:49 PM EST [Michael Vick, Atlanta Falcons,]

According to a report from The Associated Press, Michael Vick's attorney read a statement confirming that the star quarterback has reached a plea agreement with federal prosecutors. But, it's not necessarily over. There's also word that a grand jury are meeting about a possible new indictment.

It's certainly been a long road since Vick denied knowledge of the dogfighting ring's existence on his Surry County, Viginia property several months ago. His co-defendants had already plead out and agreed to testify against him. The reach of this case will no doubt go on for a long, long time. Vick faces up to five years in prison for his role in this sordid affair.

While he probably serves a shorter sentence than the max, he'll also face a suspension from commissioner Goodell. But, when it's all said and done, and a new story has dawned, will Vick get another chance? Other players have been guilty of serious crimes and worked their way back onto the field.

We all had concerns over his ability to rise to the elite quarterback level with consistent throws and performance. With two, three, four or more years out of the game, his return as a signal caller is probably unlikely. Most owners won't bring Vick in, given the fact that Arthur Blank is still reeling from this incident, and that the quarterback is the face of the team for potential advertisers and sponsors.

However, nobody can doubt his athleticism, and he is only 27. That translates into a possible role as a back or wide receiver down the road. Somewhere there is an owner contemplating this very question.

The details of the indictment were, without question, horrific. The actions described therein are barbaric.

We're a society that prides itself on allowing people to seek redemption and applaud those who make the most of their second chance.

The only questions here are: Will Michael Vick get a second chance? Who gives it to him? And will he make the most of it?
