I know we're smack-dab in the middle of the NFL regular season and we're spending a ton of energy breaking down waiver claims, dissecting dual-back systems and looking for the next sleeper pick. I know that we're trying to get past the early struggles of our top selections and find some semblance of consistency and momentum as we inch closer to the fantasy playoffs.
But, we're also in the middle of the Major League Baseball League Championship Series featuring the Mets, Cardinals, Tigers and A's. The Tigers rushed out to a 2-0 series advantage behind good pitching and timely hitting (Alexis Gomez, anyone?).
When I tuned in to Game 1 of the Mets-Cardinals on FOX, I watched the interesting battery of tests put to Albert Pujols earlier this year to compare him with Babe Ruth. As they showed the administration of a speed test on his swing, this interesting finger tapping test and several other demonstrations, I was truly intrigued and my mind drifted to thoughts of draft-day for Fantasy Baseball 2007.
Pujols is the clear-cut No. 1 selection for next year, but I want to know. Who's No. 2?
Is Alex Rodriguez still in the discussion after his non-A-Rod 2006 season? And where will he be playing?
Is it 40/40 man Alfonso Soriano, even if loses 2B eligibility?
How about Home Run slugger Ryan Howard in Philadelphia and his 59 blasts and 149 RBI?
Or can you make the case for Johan Santana after another splendid season in Minnesota?
My expectations are that Rodriguez rebounds to take that slot once again and puts up numbers more similar to his career marks. But I would be curious to here your arguments for or against a particular player. Is there somebody I missed?
Remember, post-season struggles don't matter in fantasy baseball except in the psyche.
