An epic, classic opening round, opening game of the Dallas Stars vs. Vancouver Canucks that went 4 OT's and contained a combined 120 shots, might've been one of the best games that nobody saw. If Jets-Raiders was the Heidi Bowl, Stars-Canucks was the Patrick Duffy infomercial bowl.
For whatever reason, after the 3rd OT, Versus after showing game highlights during the intermission dumped out of the game and went into Gunthy Renker infomercials. Talking on the phone to a friend of mine a Canucks fan at around 2:57 AM between periods, at around 3:30 AM having not changed the channel while talking about the game, there was still an infommercial on Versus with no explanation whatsoever. How can they do this for a Stanley Cup playoff game, especially when they've already played and shown you 3 OT's, encompassing 6 periods of hockey?
You wouldn't have known what was going on based on the online websites either: NHL.com as of 4:20AM the time I am writing this the official gamesheet still says end of 3rd OT and still has the game knotted at 4-4, and the box score had still not updated the scorer in the 4th OT, what a joke for the official website of the NHL. ESPN.com, which at 3:40 AM still had the game listed as having two seconds left in the 3rd OT, also as of this writing has yet to update their box score as to who scored the winner. Yahoo.com still has yet to update their box score. In fact the first place I saw everything fully updated with the score and who scored it is FoxSports.com, followed by SI.com.
Horrible job again by the NHL and Versus, first you have the Carolina Hurricanes open the season in the middle of the week raising their Stanley Cup Banner, up against the start of the MLB playoffs and then putting the All-Star game during the middle of the week against American Idol and now this on the first day of the Stanley Cup playoffs, brilliant. How are you supposed to get more people to watch the sport when you take it away from those who do?
For those of you wondering, congrats to Henrik Sedin on the 5-4 winner and the Vancouver Canucks fans, the only one's who saw it.
