1. The Mets are losing their all-stars to injuries at a torrid pace. Pedro's hurt, Reyes is hurt, Glavine's shoulder isn't 100%. Luckily, the NL is weak enough offensively for the Mets to compete even without Reyes. Especially now that Cliff Floyd is finally heating up. It's the pitching that's got me worried - Mike Pelfrey definintely need some more minor league work before becoming a truly effective major league pitcher, and who knows what the deal is with Brian Bannister? The Mets need to acquire a veteran pitcher for the playoffs.
2. The month of July will be crucial for the following NL teams: Atlanta, Philadelphia, Milwaukee, and the entire NL West. Are they buyers or sellers? Stay tuned...
3. The Yankees will miss the playoffs. There is no way they pass the red-hot Red Sox for the division crown, or take the Wild Card away from Detroit/Chicago. Joe Torre will get canned. Look for King George to try and recruit Lou Piniella out of retirement to take over for Joe. Barring that, he'll find a way to wake Billy Martin up from the dead, and hire him for a record seventh (sixth, maybe. I'm not sure) time.
4. Back to the Mets. Whenever they play the Marlins, I think of what the Mets could be like if they had decided to rebuild. Take a look:
C- Probably Ramon Castro. The Mets don't have any above-average catching prospects.
1B- Mike Jacobs
2B- Anderson Hernandez. Hold on, Jeff Keppinger fans. I'll get back to you.
3B- MVP David Wright. (Pujols will win the MVP, I know...)
SS- Jose Reyes
LF- Jeff Keppinger He has been playing LF for Norfolk.
CF- Lastings Milledge He was a CF before Beltran
RF- Victor Diaz
That's a pretty solid starting lineup. Definitely better than that of the Marlins. Look at the potential rotation and bullpen:
Rotation- Mike Pelfrey, Brian Bannister, Aaron Heilman, John Maine, Alay Soler
Bullpen- Heath Bell, Royce Ring, Henry Owens, Duaner Sanchez
And what if the Mets had kept Scott Kazmir? That trade will go down as the second worst trade in Mets history, behind the Nolan Ryan trade.
