Georgetown
- The Hoyas are in the midst of a dominating stretch run against the
number in which they have covered 19 times in 23 games. However, they
have covered just twice in their last four games and the ATS losses
came against three point shooting teams Notre Dame and Boston College.
Statistically Georgetown should hold a huge advantage on the defensive
end as they rank in the top 10 in FG%, 3-pt.%, and points per game
allowed, in addition to the size advantage inside with Roy Hibbert.
Hibbert put up 18 points to go along with 10 rebounds and three blocks
in the first meeting and could do so again in this matchup. Vanderbilt
was susceptible to Washington State's pair of centers as Cowgill and
Baynes put up a combined 28 and 11 in the second round. Add in power
forward Jeff Green to the mix and pose a big threat to the undersized
Commodores. Georgetown beat Boston College by pounding the ball inside
to Hibbert and Green in the second half and a similar game plan will be
in effect here. But the real key to the game is going to be the play of
Jonathan Wallace and Jesse Sapp. If the two guards can't handle Vandy's
pressure the Hoyas will find it tough going. Key Stat: Georgetown is
4-12 O/U in postseason play since 2001.
Vanderbilt - The Commodores made easy work of George
Washington in the first round, routing the Colonials by a 77-44 count.
It was nothing new to those who have seen Vanderbilt play this year,
but the 'Dores hit 12 three pointers in the game and forced 20
turnovers to earn the blowout. The second round wasn't quite as easy as
they faced a staunch defensive side in Washington State. Vandy
struggled mightily in the first half as they failed to connect from
deep, trailing by eight at the midway point. But they continued to fire
the threes and ended up shooting 10-of-27 from deep to earn the double
OT win. They live and die by the three point shot which is a bit
unnerving when backing them, but if they are hitting shots they can
beat anyone. The twist in this matchup is the revenge factor from
Vanderbilt's perspective. Vandy dropped their first game of the year,
at home, to then eighth ranked Georgetown. A very competitive first
half (39-35) saw Vandy trail by just two buckets, but Georgetown
dominated the paint and the second half as Vandy continued to miss
three point attempts. Look for the Commodores to come with a much
better shooting effort and defensive pressure this time around. Key
Stat: Vanderbilt is 6-1 ATS against teams allowing less than 62 points
per game.
Final Take: Vanderbilt has improved immensely since
the first meeting, as have the Hoyas. Despite the size mismatches we
think Vanderbilt can shoot well enough from the field and deep to cover
the big number.
