Tiger's win, intimidation or luck, may be a little of both.

Monday, January 30, 2006, 10:21 AM EST [Golf]

Tiger Woods won his 4th Buick Invitational in what was a forgettable three player playoff.  After the 1st playoff hole, Nathan Green couldn't handle the pressure and chunked the chip that ended his run at winning the tournament.  The second playoff was the 16th hole, which had the field struggling just to save par the entire tournament.  Jose Maria Olazabal's tee shot went into the sand, but he was able to get it out and leave a short downhill putt.  Well, easier said that done.  Olazabal missed the slightly downhill 4 footer putt and Tiger was handed over the tournament.

Tiger had four birdies and four bogies for an even par score of 72 in his final round.  I don't think he earned the $918,000 purse.  I do think it'll be of good use toward the new $38 million property he purchased recently in Florida.  I will accredit his win to a field that was less than competitive during Sunday's final round.  Players like Sergio Garcia had a terrible start to his final round that took him out of contention.  And, even though he had an eagle attempt on the 548 yard par 5 finishing hole, it would have been a miracle putt.  Phil Mickelson also had a chance at the playoffs if he had an eagle on the last hole as well.  However, his tee shot went into the sand, forcing him to lay up and relinquish a chance to reach the green in two.   The most hard to swallow miss was Arjun Atwal's, who missed a 5 footer that would have sent him to the playoff.  It was a total lack of concentration and execution on Atwal's part.

I think golfers in general do not feel intimidated by Tiger as they used to be.  But, at the Buick Invitational, every where you look there is a reminder of who that number one golfer in the world is.  They have advertisement with Tiger's picture around the course.  Buick has no restrains of showing who their money making athlete is.  Whether Tiger alone could intimidate the field like he used to, is up for debate.  But, he sure gets help by his sponsors.

So, I would like to end by saying the Tiger may intimidate new comers like Nathan Green and Arjun Atwal.  But, it is more evident today that he needs luck on his side to beat the usual suspect he has battled since day one.  His dominant and aggressive play had an impact in the minds of the players he faced.  But it isn't so anymore.  He is winning tournaments on opposition misses not on superior play like he used.
