NHL Players Part IX : "Bobby" Hull.

Monday, March 27, 2006, 06:35 AM EST [NHL, Chicago Blackhawks, Bobby]

When sports began super stars  were made for their games.  God created  Babe  Ruth,  Jerry Rice,  Michael Jordan, Gordie Howe, and  Bobby Hull.

Bobby Hull is the father of another Legend of Hockey Brett Hull.  Bobby had the hardest shot in the NHL when wooden sticks were used, his shot was clocked at 120 mph.  In March of 1966 Bobby Hull is the first player in NHL history to score over 50 goals.  Bobby Hull played for the Chicago Blackhawks and won the Stanley Cup.  At this time Stan Mikita was on the team to.   Bobby Hull battled with Gordie Howe along the boards for the puck.  He shot pucks at Terry Sawchuk.

In the 1960's players did not need to wear masks.  Goaltenders had played for years without masks.  So in a game against Terry Sawchuk the man with the most feared slapshot in the NHL ended up putting a puck on Sawchuk's face and  the result was bloody.  There is a picture of a stitched up Terry Sawchuk.  Terry was not playing for the Red Wings he was on the Toronto Maple Leafs.  Bobby Hull could hit, shoot the puck hard and accurate, and yes along the way help the Blackhawks to be a Stanley Cup winning team.

Bobby Hull was born in 1939.  He started his NHL career in 1957 and had a great rookie season.  He finished second in the voting for the Calder Award that is given to the NHL rookie of the year.  Hull then improved his point totals by three in the 1958-59 year, then in the 1960 year his goal scoring took on a master touch and he went on to score in epic ways;  when he retired from hockey he was second in Goals scored to Gordie Howe.

Hull had won the cup in the 1961-62 season and had more 50 goal seasons and then the World Hockey Association came knocking, a new team in Winnipeg, Manitoba was being formed.  So Hull left the NHL and The Chicago Blackhawks when many thought that Bobby Hull was playing his best game as a goal scorer and passer of the puck.  Money talks and the famed Blackhawk signed with the Winnipeg Jets for $ 1 million dollars in 1972.  The first million dollar contract in hockey history.

The Winnipeg Jets and Bobby Hull won the WHA Avco Cup in 1976, 1978, 1979.   Hull remained with the Winnipeg Jets for 18 games after the NHL/WHA merger in 1979.  Then a trade sent him elsewhere.

In the 1979-80 season a trade sent Bobby Hull to the Hartford Whalers.  He played alongside Gordie Howe.  Hull finished the season and then went on to retire with 610 goals in 1,063 regular games played.

Robert Marvin "Bobby"  Hull born January 3, 1939.  He played 23 NHL seasons, 1957-1980.  Inducted to Hockey Hall of Fame in 1983 alongside his old BlackHawks teammate Stan Mikita.
