When America was young and our ancestors were outside working in the fields after the War of the Revolution what did all of our ancestors gather to watch? Draw us together in fun and competition? The  sports of choice  were Soccer and cricket.  It is no doubt that while we would like to deny the English influence on our American culture, the evidence of English society and culture is prevalent to this day.

The enigma of sport dates back centuries and it begins with Egypt, Greece, Rome and so forth.  American sports are all about waiting for the best pitches to hit while at home plate. Waiting for the quarterback to release the game winning pass to the reciever who usually is not the big name star.  The point guard to pass the ball for the buzzer beating game winning shot.  And the waiting for the goalie in hockey to make the game winning save and stop the opponents shooter in the slot.  The mystery and allure of American sports is patience, composure, and poise under pressure.

Emotions are part of the game, tamed emotions are part of winning.  So closing in on 2076, some 70 years from now would our ancestors gather with us to watch sport and drink iced beverages, you know they would.  Enjoying game and records from the past being broken. As to Soccer and Cricket those games are lost in our history, the community of influence has changed over American culture.  However, when the FIFA World Cup of Soccer is on the television this summer then we will see our roots.
