While watching sports and wanting to be someone that would forever change the game there are athletes who kids want to be like. Admire the good deeds off the ice as well as the performance on the ice. Bobby Orr is the type of player who defines the term "class act."
The hockey prodigy born in Parry Sound, Ontario started playing hockey as a forward and then in the teenage years his coach "Bucko" McDonald encouraged Bobby Orr to play an offensive style of defense. As Orr began shifting his focus he matured in to a player who would be become legendary not only for the style of play also for his benevolence. Bobby Orr was the player who wore the Bear that played like one.
He could play his position and knock people away from the Boston goaltender and then turn up the ice as lightning fast with its unpredictability and score or pass to set up a score against the opposing goaltender. Bobby Orr was a determined player who lifted up the team as well as community. He immersed himself in charity and gave back in support and help to his fans and the city of Boston. I remember the famous "superman goal" where he is in the air with stick in front of him against the St. Louis Blues; look at the photo and all he needs is a cape. Bobby Orr had record setting stats and won the Stanley Cup in Boston. Aside from that this defensive prodigy that Chris Pronger watched, Bobby Orr never lost his heart and compassion for people and young players in the league. After Boston he went to Chicago Blackhawks and because of a knee injury his play was limited, so he assisted in coaching and teaching; mentoring players to be better in the game, then he led team Canada to a World Championship with a team leading 9 points. And after retiring in 1978 Bobby Orr bacame an agent for prospects who wanted to play in the NHL. Bobby Orr always there helping the youngsters.
Bobby Orr a determined, powerful, offensive gifted defense player and man of comapssion; helping and benevolent in community. Most players in the NHL past and present are like that. Once in awhile athletes need reminding, remembering the reputation of Bobby Orr helps.
