The "Big three" are laying off employees both salaried and union hourly workers. Detroit is still the central fixture of automobile manufacturing, yes manufacturing and research. Toyota and Honda will have to do battle with Micihigan auotworkers to shut down the "Motor City." Ann Arbor and East Lansing are not that far away. How far does Detroit Sports reach? What are its boundaries? Reading the paper about layoffs and the deficit of my state are captivating news makers on a depressing side of the headlines. Hope looms in the East. As the governor and state congress battle it out over budget and bill to law processes. Then the sports headlines. That avid fans and casual onlookers read not at a glance but in depth and with fervent eyes. Everyone knows about the pioneering figures of the automotive market just as everyone knows about the Captain Steve Yzerman. So is there alot to Celebrate in the Motor City? Come with me as we toodle along "in our Merry Oldsmobile."
The Detroit Pistons- have entered the postseason on top of the NBA. Bill Laimbeer and George Blaha call games on TV for the UPN Detroit affiliate. Fox Sports Detroit has former Spartan Greg Kelsor, "Special K" of the 1979 Spartans and Fred McCleod giving the fans the play by play and commentary. The Pistons fans sell out the Palace. Televisions are tuned in at home. The Pistons are part of the answer to how far Detroit Sports reaches. Beyond, the Mackinac Bridge and the Upper Peninsula, the fans in Canada know, north of Detroit the Pistons are winning and beat the Toronto Raptors. Chauncey Billups, Richard Hamilton are in the community of Detroit promoting lieteracy and bettering the futures of youth in reading programs. East Lansing and Ann Arbor unite to watch games and eat Nachos at the Palace. So how far does Detroit Sports reach? Across the state and below and above, Indiana cannot stand the Pistons that is testament to the portraiture of this team. Out in the public and everyone knows who are they are.
The Detroit Red Wings- are in the playoffs perched above the NHL and the players are centered and focused on one thing; winning the Stanley Cup. Poised and not over confident the Red Wings are observing the rest of the NHL and looking at how to win against the opposition. Steve Yzerman, Chris Chelios and Kris Draper are the leaders guiding them and keeping them in head coach Mike Babcock's system. The defense is the best in the league with Mathieu Schneider and Norris Trophy candidate Nicklas Lidstrom. When the Red Wings are on the ice the boundaries of Detroit Sports have no lines. The sea of Red and White have contributed to sell outs in, Chicago, Columbus, Nashville, and Denver. In other words, the "Winged Wheel" has left treadmarks across the nation in hockey rinks. When the Wings are out in the community they are at hospitals cheering up children battling cancer, contributing sums of money to find a cure for cancer, and helping the youth of Detroit to have access to the sport of hockey. The Red Wings across the expanse of the United States have fans in every hockey city and burgh, kids watch Manny Legace and are eager and wait for their time to shine, and every fan young and old are watching and hoping that our number 19 does not retire but signs on for three more years.

We route for UM or MSU football in fall. We watch FSN Detroit and rally around our teams. They set a new record for a sports city for having NBA and NHL team, who are going to the post-season in first place. Detroit is "Celebration City." And "We, the people" are cheering as the Detroit Pistons and Detroit Red Wings head to the playoffs.
