Michigan is the second most over rated team in football. Notre Dame takes first place. Michigan's four straight bowl game indicates a program in decline but the College Football Media won't let it go.
In order to give a little more depth than my opinion, let's look at Michigan's 2006 Season Performance.
Game 1: Michigan beats Vanderbilt (Finishing at #75) 27-7. Not impressive, but not bad. Michigan Fans announce wildly that they beat the weakest SEC team. But hey a win is a win right?....maybe Carr does run up the score?
Game 2: Michigan beats Central Michigan (Finishing #31) 41-17. Impressive because of the score.
Game 3: Michigan beats Notre Dame (Finished #12) 47-21. Most are impressed, but I'm not because I think Notre Dame is a number 25 ranked team at the time [Losing 8 straight Bowl games does not make a great program.] But hey the hype is good and hey a win is a win.
---Michigan is 3-0 at this point and is being hyped as a top 5 team.
Game 4: Michigan beats Wisconsin (Finishing #9) 27-13. This is a great game by Michigan. Heck I was impressed. I started to consider my opinion about Michigan. Was I being to hard on them. They looked very good and played a great game. But wait a win is just a win? So should I give it the same weight as the Vandy win? No, of course not because a win is not a win.
Game 5: Michigan beats Minnesota (#55 finisher) 28-14. Same point spread as the Wisconsin game. Michigan did not look good in this game. But hey a win is a win? right?
Game 6: Michigan beats Michigan State (#79 finisher) 31-13. Not impressive. Michigan played OK, but not a top 10 team. Get a win from anyone...that's OK because a win is a win? right?
Game 7: Michigan beats Penn State (#23 Finisher) 17-10. This was a good game because the teams were evenly matched. This is our first look at may be why Michigan should be ranked #15 at this time in season and not a top 5 team.
Game 8: Michigan beats Iowa (#61 Finisher). Michigan is tied 6-6 deep in the third quarter until Michigan is able to get a touchdown and eek out another one before close of game to window dress the score board. [But that could not be true because Carr does not care about scores...or does he?] Michigan played a terrible game....but we were treated to that great analysis of "hey a win is a win" by Michigan Fans.
Game 9: Michigan beats Northwestern (that powerhouse team which finshed at #80) with a score of 17-3. Michigan looked terrible...what can I say, "but hey a win is a win...right?"
Game 10: Michigan beats Ball State (that powerhouse team which finished at # 85) IN THE BIG HOUSE --score 34-26.....YUP good ole #85 scored 26 points on the big Michigan defense.....If Ball State had 30 more seconds...things could have gotten interesting in overtime. Needless to say Michigan played a real terrible game...."but hey a win is a win...."
Game 11: Michigan beats Indiana (#74 finisher) 34-3. Finally Michigan is able to put away a weak team decisively...but hey a win is a win.
Game 12: Michigan loses to Ohio State (Finisher #4) 42-39. This game was awesome and is one of the best games which you could argue that Michigan should be in the top ten....but if a win is a win then you have to live by a LOSS IS A LOSS.
BOWL GAME: OVER RATED AND OUTCLASSED, Michigan loses to USC 32-18. Considering Michigan was not in the same league as USC, they play their best game they could. Unfortunately, the 2006 hype and their weak schedule allowed them to be put in a bowl game that they did not have the talent for.
IN 2006,
Michigan against finshers above 50: 7-0
Michigan against finishers between 26 and 50: 1-0
Michigan against finishers in the top 25: 3-2
Losing their 4TH straight Bowl game....and it looks like they are headed for #5 in 2007.
Here's my analysis of 2007 season.
Game 1: Michigan will beat Appalachian State (Division II). That will build some stats....or wait Carr does not score for stats....
Game 2: Michigan will beat Oregon (#42 Finisher in 2006). Could be a good game?
Game 3: Michigan will beat Notre Dame (#12 Finisher in 2006). Notre Dame is even more over hyped that Michigan, but hey a win is a win. This will be the game that Michigans will beg for top 5 billeting in the polls. AND the College Media will fall for it.
Game 4: Michigan will lose to Penn State (#23 Finisher in 2006). Michigan has a tough time playing two teams of equal talent back to back.
----Michigan will be in full hype mode of the next couple of games with Michigan at 3-1.
Game 5: Michigan beat Northweatern (Again....finshed #80 in 2006). Michigan at 4-1.
Game 6: Michigan beats Eastern Michigan (#116 Finisher in 2006). But hey awin is a win? Right?
Game 7: Michigan beats Purdue (#48 finisher in 2006). Should be a good game for Michigan fans at 6-1.
Game 8: Michigan beats Illinois (#106 Finisher in 2006). Should be a good game for Michigan Fans. 7-1.
Game 9: Michigan beats Minnesota (#55 finisher in 2006). 8-1
Game 10: Michigan beats Michigan State (#79 Finisher in 2006) 9-1
Game 11: Michigan loses to Wisconsin (#9) in an upset to Michigan fans, but predictable all of us. Michigan 9-2.
Game 12: Michgan loses to Ohio State.
Michigan finishes at 9-3.....but goes to another bowl game above their talent, they lose and set for the 2008 season hype.
YOU DO NOT LOSE 4 BOWL GAMES IN A ROW AND STICK TO THE GREAT PROGRAM HYPE AS THE BASE OF YOUR PRESEASON HYPE TO PROMOTE YOUR TEAM IN THE TOP TEN. Michigan is a #15-#20 type team.
