By: Kevin Cottrell Jr. Just A Thought… THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WINS & LOSSES…Every great athlete has a mentor. Larry Fitzgerald leans on Chris Carter, and all Carter did was catch TDs.. Devin Hester’s mentor is Deion Sanders, so it’s no surprise how exciting Hester is when he touches the ball. On the hardwood, Deron Williams mentor is John Stockton, explaining Deron’s effortless execution of the pick-n-roll. And we all know Kobe mirrors Michael Jordan hence his clutch playing and champion pedigree. Before any of the current athletes become the best (and leaders) at what they do, they find the best individual to follow. The mentor is there to coach one through adversity, they’re the bridge between failure and success. In sports, athletes often ...

By: Kevin Cottrell Jr. Just A Thought… CRITIQUE or COMPLIMENT…which would you prefer? Everyone loves to be told nice things about themselves, even if they already know/heard these things. But what about something you never knew about yourself (or something you’ve ignored). The thing is no one in life is perfect so WE can all use being critiqued from time to time. In fact a person who seeks critiquing is the one that will ultimately be complimented on their hard work and results. No ball player perfected a jump shot, learned the perfect form tackle and caught up to hitting the toughest curve balls because they were complimented there whole life. In fact, none of those things would have ever been accomplished without a critique. Whether you’re on the job or ...

By: Kevin Cottrell Jr. BEWARE OF THE KILLER BEE…For the past three years I’ve submitted my weekly installments of “Thoughtful Thursday”, to shed my light on the world of sports and to also use sports as a metaphor to life. The inspiration behind my weekly blog stems from the words of wisdom provided by Rev Run. So of course it was a pleasure to have an opportunity to thank him yesterday during a book signing. With that said one of my favorite Rev Run quotes came to mind for this week’s edition of TT. Since we were young we’ve been taught to never hold a grudge. Yet the older we are it seems as if we hold our grudges longer! Take the Denver Broncos, new head coach Josh McDaniels got off on a bad note with his franchise ...

By: Kevin Cottrell Jr. Just A Thought… Character vs. Reputation…To be clear, Character is who you are and how you approach life and react in the face of adversity. Reputation is simply what others think of you. For some reason many of us tend to think we have “a reputation to uphold” but few of us realize the true importance of building our character. Let’s take a couple of athletes for example. In baseball, Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton returned a last season from a 2-year ban for drug & alcohol abuse. After returning to the Majors Josh became the poster boy for recovering addicts. He was as clean as can be and even became an All-Star. However, this past January Hamilton had a relapse and pictures recently surfaced of Hamilton drunk (and or ...

THOUGHTFUL THURSDAY By: Kevin Cottrell Jr. Just A Thought… DOG DAYS OF SUMMER…As temperatures begin to heat up across NFL Training Camps, the talk of Michael Vick showing up at one are cooling by the day. Many “experts” believe that it will take an injury or some form of desperation for an Owner, GM and Coach to agree to bring in Mike while fans simply feel he’s being black balled. No matter what one may think, it’s important for the QB to remain focused and continue working out for the all important phone call for an NFL tryout. You see whether you’re looking to be reinstated to the NFL or simply trying to get above the poverty line in the midst of the recession one can only take life’s challenges head on in hopes of obtaining ...

By: Kevin Cottrell Jr 4th and Long…When the names Adam “Pacman” Jones, Plaxico Burress and Donte Stallworth come to mind, many immediately think “these guys had it all playing in the NFL yet lost it with one bad decision. For those of you who don’t know life is simply like a game of football. We must game plan our approach to every opponent (from health to annoying co-workers) because life is all about strategy. The entire week we’ve focused on Michael Vick, who will be approaching a 4th and Long situation in relation to his career. This will be his last chance and success for him is a long shot! As we sit back as fans and admire these players for their athleticism and accomplishments, use their missteps as inspiration for you to continue doing ...

IT'S REAL. IT'S FUN. but is it REAL FUN? By: Kevin Cottrell Jr. For those of you that may have missed the first installment of the REAL….the FUN and the REAL FUN…This week’s focus is on Michael Vick. We’ve tackled questions surrounding his recent release from Federal prison and weighed the possibility of the former QB returning to the Gridiron. We left off with teams 32-27, from least likely to likely, take a chance in signing him, those teams included: Falcons, Packers, Colts, Giants, Jets and Vikings. If you feel the need to catch up go back and read the first edition. For those who are up to speed let’s move on to the next group of teams that I like to call the “Thanks…but NO Thanks” Group.. Some teams have a signal caller to hand ...

IT’s REAL…IT”S FUN but is it REAL FUN? By: Kevin Cottrell Jr After an 8-month layoff from the blogosphere, there’s only one topic (not related to Chicago Sports) that could peak my interest enough to place my fingers on the nearest set of home row keys- one Michael Dwayne Vick. Once loved by all for his dynamic play on the football field now finds himself hated by many for his outlandish behavior off the field. We’ve heard the various depictions of his involvement in dog fighting. He missed two seasons of NFL football, lost over $70 Million in salary and now faces the toughest rush he’s ever seen, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. Today marks the end of his Federal sentence and although he can’t conduct any interviews for another week (due ... |
