Thoughtful Thursday
By: Kevin Cottrell, Jr.
Just A Thought...
Quick ask yourself, what's your therapy? When times get hard, and you feel like you can't go on, what do you do for therapy? I myself watch sports and write (I know pathetic), but in the sports world it's often that athletes would prefer to play the game they love. Tiger Woods is no different. After losing his father to Cancer, Tiger eventually returned to Golf, the game his father introduced him to. Sure he didn't perform well but it was his first step of therapy. After a few charity and public appearances (step 2) Tiger was prepared to defend his title in this past weekend British Open. Tiger didn't disappoint leading 3/4 of the way in capturing his 11th major (tied 2nd all-time). So ask yourself what's your therapy (or sport)? Because for Tiger without sports (or therapy) Golf would have been a boring walk in the park...and to me that's pathetic.
NFL
In case you missed last week's edition of Thoughtful Thursday (scroll down), we previewed the NFC North and NFC South in which I predicted the Chicago Bears to win the North (12-4) and the Atlanta Falcons (11-5) to win the South. Now its time to switch our direction (or focus) from North & South to East & West. Will T.O. shift Eastern powers? Can the Seahawks defend? Or will the Cardinals take over the West? Or will Eli be the Mann(ing) in the big apple? All that and more in this week's NFC longitude outlook?
NFC East (Order of Predicted Finish)
1. Dallas Cowboys (2005: 9-7) Since the departure of Deion, Emmitt, Irvin, and Aikman, the only star in Dallas was located on the Cowboys uniform. Now that Bill Parcells philosophy is in place, coupled with the gun slinging arm of Drew Bledsoe, one piece was missing, an ultimate go to guy (sorry Keyshawn). Well say no more with the addition of T.O. the only timeouts needed will be by opponents defense trying to adjust to the likes of Owens, Glenn, and Witten. Glenn is a speedster and Owens is tough over the middle and explosive in the open field. Witten is a talented receiver at tight end and as a result will be a nightmare for East opponents. The 'boys 9-7 record was due to the loss of a few games in the final seconds, hence the arrival of Mike Vanderjagt (from the Colts) Vanderjagt is pretty much automatic, just don't ask him to win in the playoffs.
Prediction: 11-5
2. New York Giants (2005: 11-5) In 2005 the Giants played big in the first half of the season posting one of the most potent offenses in the "L". But Eli would eventually break down under the pressure of a grueling NFL season. Coming into his third season look for Manning's maturity to kick into high gear. With the addition of Sinorice Moss (brother of Santana) Eli will have the option of releasing the ball quicker to the elusive receiver. Not to mention Shockey, Burress, Toomer, and the tough running of Tiki Barber will keep the Giants in the hunt for it all. Many feel that Defense is the key to winning it all, as do the Giants with the addition of LB LaVar Arrington, CB Sam Madison, and SS Will Demps, it would appear that they are shaping up to become a top contender in not only the East but the NFC as a whole. The big question will be health as most of their key players are true veterans.
Prediction: 10-6 Wild Card
3. Washington Redskins (2005: 10-6) Did someone yell air attack! With the addition of Randle El, and Brandon Lloyd at receiver (coupled w/ Santana Moss) it would appear that this team is a D.B.'s nightmare, and this may be true. But please believe that with Cooley at tight end to draw attention in the middle, Clinton Portis should look to have a banner year out of the backfield. So why are they picked to finish third in the NFC East, (other than this is a tough division) is the fact that Mark Brunnell isn't getting any younger. While its true that he has a great nucleus around him he is prone to injury and his backup Jason Campbell (who has potential) lacks the needed experience in a division as tough as the NFC East. On the defensive side of the ball Adam Archuleta will be coupled with the hard-hitting Sean Taylor, but veteran spark plug LaVar Arrington was replaced by rookie Roger McIntosh, this could prove to be their downfall in stopping other East opponents.
Prediction: 9-7
4. Philadelphia Eagles (2005: 6-10) If last year was a disaster, then this season will be a catastrophe. I could care less what anyone else says in regards to the release of T.O., but the team literally digressed 5 years with his loss. For those of you who forgot McNabb was always told that with a big play threat (like Owens) the sky is the limit, but when he (Owens) is replaced by a second year player in Reggie Brown (43 rec. 571 yards '05) one can only hope that a mere flash of #81 will be seen in Brown. Its imperative for the defense to put the "O" in scoring position due to their lack of fire power, and their defense seems to look good on paper...then again that was about 5 years ago.
Prediction: 7-9
NFC West (Predicted Order of Finish)
1. Seattle Seahawks (2005:13-3) After reaching the Super Bowl for the first time in franchise history (and losing) the city of Seattle was left sleepless for the past six months with hopes of returning to the big game to be crowned champs. The Seahawks retained 9 starters on an offense that averaged 370 yards per game in 2005. With the addition of Seattle native Nate Burleson the "O" should regain its form, however there biggest loss may have been LG Steve Hutchinson, we shall soon find out. In the end the Seahawks own this "weak" division and will continue to be king until someone else says so.
Prediction: 12-4
2. Arizona Cardinals (2005: 5-11) Lets get one thing straight, the Cardinals featured two wide-outs (Boldin, Fitzgerald) that posted 100 catches campaign for a season, which was responsible for the #1 passing attack in the NFL and they only managed 5 wins. How could this be? Well its obvious that they had to do a lot of catching up rather than putting games away, which is why the addition of Edgerrin James gives them an opportunity to contend for the wild-card spot, and even the NFC West. Many feel as if Kurt Warner will not be the guy to get these guys over the hump (I'm one of those people), which is why the draft selection of Matt Leinart will prove to be a great one. Look for Leinart to be thrusted into the starting role due to a Warner injury. Watch out this team is a true sleeper!
Prediction: 9-7
3. St. Louis Rams (2005: 6-10) Is it just me or does the days of the "greatest show on turf" seem to be pre-historic. Warner is a Cardinal, and after a season-ending knee surgery next week it would seem, as if Marshall Faulk will finally hang up his cleats. Then again the team does have Holt and Bruce (who aren't getting any younger). Now the load is placed on RB Stephen Jackson, and while he may be fast and strong to carry the team, the question is for how long? It's obvious that this team is entering its rebuilding stage, and like the city's famous Arch what goes up most come down, even the Rams record.
Prediction: 8-8
4. San Francisco 49ers (2005: 4-12) Yes the days of Montana & Young to Rice, and even Garcia to Owens are long gone. But the future of (Alex) Smith to (Vernon) Davis is now. The only problem with that tandem is that one is entering his second season, whereas the other is a rookie. There isn't much to analyze other than, the fact that this may be the worse team in the NFL. As a result the City of San Fran. Should appreciate Barry Bonds before he too is long gone.
Prediction: 4-12
Sports Ventz
MLB: Greg Anderson, personal trainer/ childhood friend of Bonds said he'd rather go back to prison for a third time than take part in the Grand Jury investigation of tax evasion and perjury against Barry Bonds. Either he's a damn good friend, or the money is damn good...you be the judge!
USA B-Ball: For those of you who don't know the first cut was made for the USA National team that will compete in Japan in mid August. The three cuts were: Shawn Marion, Adam Morrison, and Luke Ridnour. Prior to them being cut Kobe Bryant, Lamar Odom, J.J. Reddick, Chauncey Billups, Rashard Lewis, Paul Pierce, and Michael Redd could not participate in the "try-out" due to injury, or family reasons. I don't know about you but we may be better off having an open run at all NBA arenas for NBA players interested because players seem to cut themselves well before being cut.
NFL Holdouts/More: Now that the NFL season is officially underway with teams in training camps, there will always be contract issues to get in the way of players reporting, this year being no different here are a few notable holdouts, and team headaches;
o RB Reggie Bush- The most controversial rookie will continue to be a problem now that his contract negotiation is heating up. The problem is he wants more than the #1 pick and he didn't even get picked #1, I don't know but something tells me this Bush won't get over on New Orleans this time around.
o WR Deion Branch- of the New England Patriots is looking to holdout from camp because he is unhappy with his contract. Although his numbers isn't as eye-popping as say Terrell Owens, he was crowned MVP of that same Super Bowl Terrell played in. That's something to think about.
o WR Jerry Porter- of the Oakland Raiders is seeking a trade b/c he doesn't get along with Head Coach Art Shell. The team is actively seeking a trade but wants a first round pick involved, good luck on that one.
o REDZONE Magazine: Go ahead throw a flag for reader interference! For those of you who may be unaware I have been working to introduce my magazine (REDZONE) to the world. It will be laced with 100% Football from Preps to Pros, and ooks to launch by the beginning of football season (Sept. 7). Many of you may be familiar with SLAM Magazine (Basketball), well RedZone will attempt to represent for the guys between the hash marks. When entering the RedZone please remember to enjoy, because you may never get there again!

[T.O., NFC North/South Preview]
By: Kevin Cottrell, Jr.
Just A Thought...
For some strange reason we as humanity are quick to judge others, ironically much quicker than ourselves. The sports world is no different. Take football for instance, many would say that Terrell "T.O." Owens is arrogant, cocky, selfish...you get the point. But after spending time with a guy like Terrell you find that he's a lot more down to earth, easy-going, and a down right competitor. We all witnessed him being dismissed from the Philadelphia Eagles due to some comments made against the Eagle organization, but please keep in mind that there are T.O. sides to every story. Terrell quickly went from being the Most Valuable Player to the Most Vilified. Many felt that T.O. stood for "Team Obliterator" when he was actually being "Team Oriented". Despite what the media has said, Owens kept quiet for 8 months prior to the release of his self-titled book "T.O." After reading his Best Seller, it was solidified that we should look within ourselves before judging others. So remember, never judge a book by its cover...at least until you've read it!
NFL
To those of you who haven't noticed FOOTBALL is back! Yes, your favorite teams and players return to their perspective team facilities to prepare for the pursuit of the Lombardi Trophy. 32 Teams, 2 conferences, 8 divisions, and 1 common goal, playing on Feb. 4, 2007 in Miami for Super Bowl XL1. Two teams we'll make it, one will win. Beginning with today, every TT will feature a division breakdown and prediction leading up to opening day (Thursday Sept. 7). Due to my miscalculations today will have to consist of two divisions to stay on pace to finish 9/7. Proceed with caution...and remember these are just my thoughts.
NFC North (Order of Predicted Finish)
1. Chicago Bears (2005: 11-5) Last year the Bears captured the NFC North title behind their "D", a.k.a. "Monsters of the Midway." The Bears had dreams of going deep into the playoffs before their worst nightmare came along, and Rex Grossman was injured for the remainder of the regular season. After sweeping the tough NFC South, the Bears seemed to be a lock to advance to the NFC Championship game, until they faced a team from the NFC South (Panthers). Needless to say the Bears "O" showed up posting 21 points, and it was their "D" that stood for disappointment. 2006, should be an improvement with the return of all 22 starters. However with the addition of QB Brian Griese, and the return of RB Cedric Benson, two starters may eventually lose their position. Rookie Devin Hester will be key in putting the "O" in good position on special teams, and the health of Grossman will determine how far they go. The Bears toughest test will come in week 4 when they face the NFC Champion Seattle Seahawks.
Prediction: 12-4
2. Minnesota Vikings (2005: 9-7) In 2005 the Vikings had an up and down season, that ended with the loss of QB Daunte Culpepper and WR Nate Burleson. Brad Johnson stepped up in the absence of Culpepper, but the big question will be can he stay healthy for an entire season. If not you're looking at Mike McMahon as a backup (last time he backed up a injured QB it wasn't pretty). With that being said the play of Koren Robinson and Troy Williamson at receiver is key in the Vikings success. Overall the Vikings have 7 new starters and this could prove to be a tough transition for the team as a whole.
Prediction: 8-8
3. Detroit Lions (2005: 5-11) Whew! Where do I began? The Lions were a team
full of potential. The only problem was that the potential was stacked at WR, but their signal caller couldn't get them the ball. Veteran QB Jon Kitna will attempt to right Detroit's wrongs, joining forces with Roy & Mike Williams. Coupled with the tutelage of offensive guru Mike Martz, the Lions should expect some improvement. But don't get ahead of yourselves, the "D" needs to step up and put the "O" in great field position. If not for their tough non-conference schedule the Lions could make a push for the wild card spot, then again they are the Lions.
Prediction: 7-9
4. Green Bay Packers (2005: 4-12) Whenever the Packers are mentioned, the first thing that comes to mind is WHY? Why did they do so poorly in '05? Why did they lose Javon Walker? Why did Green Bay "Pack" things in so soon? Everything could be answered with two words, Brett Favre. Yes, Mr. Clutch couldn't come through when Walker went down with an injury, Mr. Clutch threw a career high 29 interceptions after turning his back on his best target in Walker. So, why didn't he just walk away from the game you ask? Because he has too much pride to do so. Unfortunately things won't be much better this season, losing 8 key players, including C Mike Flanagan, and receivers Antonio Chatman and the aforementioned Walker. Their defense relies on a rookie MLB (A.J. Hawk), and a declining corner (Charles Woodson) to complete holes in their "D". With that being said, Lambeau Field may seem frozen in September, with the cold play of the Packers. Look at it this way Packer fans, all good things Have or Will come to an end. (Sorry if I'm harsh I am a die-hard Bears fan!)
Prediction: 6-10
NFC South (Predicted Order of Finish)
1. Atlanta Falcons (2005: 8-8) After competing in the '04 NFC Title game, the Falcons had hopes of contending for a title in '05. In the first half of the season, the Falcons posted a 6-2 record, and proved that they were still supreme. But things would quickly change and Atlanta would finish the season 2-6. Its true that their defense suffered injuries to MLB Hartwell, as well as the entire secondary being banged up for the majority of the season. But remember Safety First, which is why the Falcons signed SS Lawyer Milloy and FS Chris Crocker to bolster a secondary that features CB standout DeAngelo Hall. Did I forget the Falcons biggest acquisition. Well for those of you living under a rock, Atlanta acquired DE John Abraham, which completes a tough front four. With an electric Michael Vick and a tough defense the sky is the limit, which is why they are my pick to win the NFC South.
Prediction: 11-5
2. Carolina Panthers (2005: 11-5) Last season was one in which many questions were answered. Yes, Steve Smith recovered from a '04 injury, yes, Delhomme is a legit QB, but no they cannot win it all by themselves! Many critics wrote off the Panthers prior to the '05 kickoff due to the loss of All-Pro receiver Mushin Muhammad. The problem here is that Smith caught four-times more passes than any other wide out on the roster. As a result, Carolina signed veteran WR Keyshawn Johnson. Will he be the final piece to the Panthers puzzle? Can DeShaun Foster prevent rookie DeAngelo Williams from taking his spot? One things for sure with the new questions being asked, none of these guys can play defense, and in a division that features, Dunn, Vick, Duckett, Reggie Bush, and Cadillac Williams someone in their secondary has got to come up and make some tackles. With the loss of Ricky Manning Jr., it'll be interesting to see how Colin Branch performs at the SS position. Remember this is a tough division and teams will be gunning for Smith.
Prediction: 10-6 Wild Card
3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2005: 11-5) I don't know about you, but something tells me that Tampa's offense was a "fluke" in '05. The team was literally a few controversial calls away from not only winning their division but also missing the playoffs. With that being said what improvements did they make in the off-season? Absolutely 0! They loss veteran QB Brian Griese, which places all the pressure on QB Chris Simms. Can Cadillac prove to be a fine-tuned as Sedan or a rusty'78 Pinto? One thing is for certain the Bucs' tough defense remains in tack, with safety Dexter Jackson being replaced by Will Allen. The only problem with that is the "D" isn't getting any younger. Tampa will face a stretch of 3 games in 11 days, including back-to-back visits to Carolina and Dallas. Barring injury this team could surprise many, but this is the NFL and they are members of the NFC South.
Prediction: 9-7
4. New Orleans Saints (2005: 3-13) Due to the effects of Hurricane Katrina, the Saints were forced to play all 16 games on the road, so please forgive their 3-13 record but don't forget it. New Orleans picked up QB Drew Brees, and by the blessings of God, the ultimate Saint in RB sensation Reggie Bush. But even those two won't be able to pull them out of the bottom of the South for '06. Brees is coming off a shoulder injury, and Bush is still a rookie. Coupled with the tough division and schedule, look for the Saints to be competitive and keeping many games close. There will be a lot of excitement as they return to the Superdome in Week 3 to face division rival Atlanta Falcons. Sure their "O" seems to be explosive on paper, but that's why they play the games. The Saints will struggle but should still be exciting to watch.
Prediction: 6-10

[NBA Summer League, USA Basketb]
By: Kevin Cottrell, Jr.
In the educational world, Summer School is viewed as a time for "slacking" students to catch up to their peers. Whether they're trying to pass on to the next level, or even attending summer courses to gain an edge in the upcoming semester many things can be taught and learned during this time period. In the sports world, the NBA has its version of Summer School, many draft picks, undrafted players, and young veterans, meet in cities such as Vegas, and Orlando to convene in their version of summer school. Some of the participants are using this time to gain an edge in the upcoming season, some are looking to get up to speed, while others are just trying to make the grade. Below is Thoughtful Thursday's version of a Progress Report, pay attention class is now in session!
NBA
Summer League News & Notes:
o Las Vegas: For many players participating in the Vegas summer camp, they hope what goes on in Vegas doesn't stay in Vegas. Randy Foye, T-Wolves, is averaging 26 points/ game, and to many is favored to be R.O.Y. (Rookie of the Year)....but B-ROY (Brandon Roy), Blazers, is averaging 15 points (18 pts. Last game) and 4 assists shooting 66% (4 games). He's displaying an all-around game backing opponents down, crossing both ways, with step-back and fade-away jumpers however his teammate, LaMarcus Aldridge, isn't doing so well, averaging 10.5 points 6 rebs. (shooting 42%) settling for outside shots...Cavs' rookie Shannon Brown is proving to be a great pick-up for Cleveland posting 16 pts. 5 assts. at PG and 19 pts. at SG. When asked about how he feels playing alongside LeBron James he reminded reporters that he's excited since they've known one another since they were 16 through AAU Basketball...
o Orlando: For the second year in a row a talented point guard was passed over in the draft, and it seems as if for a second year he's making them pay! Marcus Williams, Nets, debuted with a 24 point 12 asst. (4-5 3pt.) outing. It seems as if J. Kidd has finally found someone to pass the torch to... Sean May, Bobcats, seems to be 100% healthy after suffering a season ending knee injury. He posted 22 pts. 7 rebs. 6 stls. Including a shot from long-distance "I'm just trying to extend my game and show that I'm not just a back-to-the-basket player"....May's newest teammate Adam Morrison got off to a rocky start with a 3-14 (12 points) performance "There were some jitters.." said Morrison, but he did add 5 asst. 4 rebs and 1 blk. The man with a 'stache proved why the 'cats selected him at #3, by coming out in his second game draining his first 5 shots (15 of the 'Cats first 21 points) Scoring 25 points in the first half (finishing with 29) against the Bulls....Speaking of which Chicago got to see their top pick Tyrus Thomas display his talents. As he auditioned at SF he shot 3-9 but he bounced back against the Bobcats scoring 17 points 11 rebounds and 2 blocks, that may have been impressive to many but the eye-catcher in Chicago is Swedish import, Thabo Sefolosha, No BULL! Sefolosha has connected on 11 of 16 shots (avg. 16 pts.) and at 6'5 215 he's proving that he is a solid defender matching up with the likes of Adam Morrison...When there's Morrison there's Redick, but not in the case of summer league. J.J. Redick is sitting out of summer league play due to a herniated disk. "Because I haven't been able to play ball, it's made me grouchy, at least that's what all my friends say." Let's hope J.J. can play soon, the last time he was grouchy he was cited for a DUI.
Free-Agency
o Upon Further Review: Yes! The city of Cleveland can exhale LeBron James has agreed to terms for a contract extension. But wait he turned down the 5 yr. $80 million offer, and instead agreed to a 3 yr. $60 million deal with an option year...translation the 'Cavs must win now....As a result of LBJ's deal Carmelo Anthony, was offered the same five-year extension and originally agreed before rethinking the deal. But he quickly came back down to earth, agreeing to terms to receive a GUARANTEED $80 million. The third party from the '03 class, Dwyane Wade, thought long and in my eyes thought wrong. He too was offered the max 5-year deal, and verbally agreed to terms before stating that he will agree to a 3-year deal like James'. To me it was smart for LeBron because he has over $100 million NIKE dollars to play with, while D-Wade who is injury prone is not so fortunate. Memo to D-Wade take the guaranteed money, you already have a ring!
o Bonzi Wells, has reportedly been testing the market, but it seems as if he'll eventually be crowned by the Kings to rejoin Artest & Co.
o Al Harrington, it seems will join a new team via sign and trade. The front-runners are the Golden State Warriors, but Indiana is trying to keep pace in the hunt for Al....stay tuned.
o Mike James, Who! Mike James (I always wanted to do that!) has been acting as his own agent during the off-season meeting with owners and coaches during the Las Vegas summer league. His front-runners are the Mavericks, due to his long-term relationship with Avery Johnson, followed by the Rockets and Wolves. His #1 priority is to win a Championship, and a chance to start. Its safe to say that the Mavs, would land him but with the likes of Devin Harris and Jason Terry would James fit in...Rockets should launch for James since they have two stars in McGrady and Ming.
SPORTS VENTZ
o USA Basketball Set-back! Kirk Hinrich, dynamic guard of the Chicago Bulls was added to the USA Basketball roster Wednesday after J.J. Redick announced he will not participate in try-outs due to his back injury. To many it may be a set-back but to me it was an upgrade!
o Who Cares? Apparently 14.4 million viewers in regards to the MLB All-Star game. I must admit I myself did not care to watch this year's festivities, but was surprised to learn that ratings for the Home Run Derby (Fox) went up 10% from last year's competition, and the game itself went up 15% from last year. If you CARE to know Phillies' stand-out Ryan Howard was victorious in the long ball classic launching 23 balls to the bleachers...As for the game itself, the AL won 3-2, during the ninth inning off a 2-out, 2-run triple, thanks to Rangers shortstop Michael Young. Only once in history had a team been losing an All-Star Game with two outs in the ninth to eventually come out with a W, that was 1941 off the bat of a guy named Ted Williams, great company for Young.
o Stop Snitching! Yeah I said it! What ever happened to loyalty, friendship, honor, crew tight, friends to the end! Well, one of Barry Bonds' longtime friends, Steve Hoskins a memorabilia salesmen, is a key witness against Bonds as the federal government ponders perjury or tax-evasion charges against the Giants slugger. The two sold Bonds' sports equipment through Hoskins' company. All the clich

[NBA Free Agency, NHL, Man Laws]
By: Kevin Cottrell, Jr.
This week has been dubbed "A Week of Freedom". From the release of the Queen Bee and Dallas Austin to the celebration of Independence Day. July 4th. Fireworks. BBQ. A day to be FREE, and celebrating FREE-dom as Americans know it. In the NBA, players have their own version of "Independence Day" July 1st the day players are declared FREE-agents, from being locked into contracts for 4 to 6 seasons to being given the option to explore new opportunities both financially and for the pursuit of the ultimate fireworks show, a championship parade. From your favorite team to the team you hate most; many have sought freedom in releasing players and obtaining new talent for the "betterment" of the team. Below is Thoughtful Thursday's Free For All!
NBA
During the first five days of the NBA free-agency period many players have reached verbal agreements with their new employers, but please keep in mind that contracts will not be official until July 12.
o Chicago: From one side of Lake Michigan to the other, Chicago made the biggest splash signing Center Ben Wallace to a 4yr. Deal ($60 million). With that acquisition the Bulls have a solidified big man that can control the boards and alter shots. But he would be joined by veteran PF/C P.J. Brown via trade that sent Tyson Chandler to New Orleans for the veteran big man along with 6'6 guard J.R. Smith. The Baby Bulls have quickly matured into Eastern Conference contenders. Some reports say that J.R. Smith may be dealt again so stay tuned.
o Detroit: To the many Pistons mourning the loss of Wallace to central division rival Chicago; one may rest easier knowing that Detroit has lured Center Nazr Mohammed (5yr.$30 million) from the San Antonio Spurs. Although he's no Ben Wallace he can still clog things up in the middle for the rest of the Fab Four. This move was big blocking the Cleveland Cavaliers, another central rival, from courting the veteran center.
o Atlanta: The Hawks are finally "point-ing" in the right direction acquiring PG Speedy Claxton (4yr. $25 million), from the Hornets. Claxton gained valuable playoff experience during the Spurs 2003 Championship run. This move by the Hawks allows Joe Johnson to move into his normal position of shooting guard.
o Los Angeles (x2): The Clippers locked down its main free-agent obligation by resigning Sam Cassell (2yr. $13 million), the Hawks offered the same amount but the Clippers matched. On the other hand, the Clippers lose sharpshooter Vladimir Radmanovic to Staples Center mates L.A. Lakers. Although this isn't a blockbuster move for the Lakers, Radmanovic shooting abilities extends the defense and creates opportunities for Kobe and Odom. As a result of Vlad bolting to the Lakers, the Clippers have signed F Tim Thomas (4yr. $24 million), a big forward that can spread the floor for Elton Brand. Who's supreme in L.A. now?
o New Orleans/Oklahoma: The Hornets have been buzzing thus far acquiring Peja Stojakovic (5yr. $60 million) to team Peja long-distance shooting with Rookie of the year Chris Paul. The Hornets also signed veteran PG Bobby Jackson to a multi-year deal to back-up Paul and add depth at the guard position. With the acquisition of Tyson Chandler, the Hornets are ready to run wild in the West!
o Dallas: The Mavericks wasted no time in resigning PG Jason Terry (6yr. $50 million) to direct their dynamic offense for years to come. They may have to make a serious run immediately because Dirk becomes a free agent at the end of next season.
o Denver: Despite missing the entire '05-'06 season (27 games in '04-'-05) due to knee injuries, the Nuggets have reached an agreement with center Nene (6yr. $60 million). But stay tuned because this could lead to the departure of Kenyon Martin.
o Utah: The Jazz have taken guard by resigning Matt Harping (deal), and acquiring Derek Fisher via trade from the Warriors for Devin Brown, Keith McCleod, and Andre Owens.
o Class of '03: Yes, the dynamic class of 2003 is up for extensions, which equals "Cha-Ching". Nuggets swingman Carmelo Anthony and Heat's guard Dwyane Wade have both reached 5year extensions worth about $80 million. As for the '03 peer in LeBron James, who was offered the same deal, he has yet to agree to his extension. But 'Cavs fans shouldn't lose any sleep LeBron and his agent have been vacating, and tending to personal commitments. The two sides should reach an agreement before James leaves for the USA Basketball Camp (July 19) in Las Vegas.
o Who's Left? It's obvious that the free agent period has been very active to say the least, but if your team is looking for that missing piece there are a few quality players available.
1. Al Harrington, 25, 6'9 Small Forward brings experience and scoring range from 15-20 feet. He has developed into a quality defender but his motivation is often questioned. Some reports have him resurfacing back in Indiana.
2. Bonzi Wells, 29, 6'5 Shooting Guard/ Forward that brings toughness and big play. Although he's listed at 6'5 he plays like he's 6'8, Wells could be the final piece to a contenders puzzle, but don't be surprised if the Maloof brothers resign him to join Ron Artest for a full-season.
3. Jared Jeffries, 24, 6'11 Guard/ Forward, Jeffries came on for the Wizards down the stretch displaying his length and athleticism in defending LeBron James during the playoffs. Although he's no James stopper, a player with his size and athleticism could be a nice pick up for many teams.
4. Eddie House, 28, 6'1 Combo Guard, House has reportedly opted out of his contract to test the market. He brought instant offense off the bench serving as a backup for Steve Nash. His up-tempo play is what many teams need at the guard position; look for the Bucks (who traded T.J. Ford to Toronto for Charlie Villaneuva) and Grizzles, to name a few, to make an offer to House.
SPORTS VENTZ
o NBA: Chicago Bulls mascot, Benny the Bull, was charged with misdemeanor battery and driving within a parkway during the Taste of Chicago at the outdoor festival. Apparently he was jacked up about Wallace joining the team as the 26-year-old is accused of throwing a punch at an off-duty sheriff's deputy, knocking off his glasses and breaking his watch. I don't know about you but this seems like a bunch of BULL-S***! But don't worry the Benny the Bull suit was returned to the United Center after his arrest.
o MLB: It's widely known that the New York Mets, and Chicago White Sox are viewed as second fiddle in their hometown's to the Yankees and Cubs. Their play has proven that the two clubs are supreme in their large cities having produced six all-star selections each. Say what you want but the Sox are defending champs and the Mets are leading the NL East. All-Star Game July 11th in Pittsburgh.
o NHL: As if the city of Detroit has not suffered enough with the loss of Ben Wallace, Detroit Red Wings legend Steve Yzerman, who led the Red Wings to three Stanley Cup titles and spent his entire 23-year NHL career in Detroit, retired from playing Monday, but said he plans to stay in the organization while devoting more time to his family.
o GOOD CALL: Miller Lite has recently launched a series of ads promoting Man Laws, part of the "Men of the Square Table" campaign. Manlaws.com has received roughly 50, 000 submissions with hopes of one lucky winner appearing in a Man Law commercial. Here are some of the sites highlights: "A man shall never ask for help opening his Miller Lite. Good Call." "Cooler protocol-Miller Lite placed in first, then add ice. Good Call." "Unless you're a pro athlete, flip-up sunglasses are inadvisable this summer. Good Call." And my personal entry: " A guy who does not have a dish, shall obtain one just for football season, then when the regular season is over he shall return the dish immediately. Good Call."

[NBA Draft, Evander Holyfield, ]
By: Kevin Cottrell, Jr.
Just when you thought the pro sports season was at a stand still the NBA was set to showcase stars of tomorrow in the 2006 NBA Draft today! The only problem was that there was no clear-cut star. One may say that the college's leading scorer; Adam Morrison (28 pts. /g) could be the gem of the draft, yet he was not a #1 selection. Instead, the toss up was between an Italian that many of American fans has never of, and a collegiate freshman who proved to the world that he could soar to new heights during the NCAA Tournament (Tyrus Thomas). In other words to the naked eye the NBA draft was prematurely viewed as being as dry as Damon Wayans during the 2006 BET Awards, but as we would soon find out the draft would have more story lines than Desperate Housewives...let's take a trip down POTENTIAL lane, better known as the NBA draft.
NBA
The result of NBA teams draft prospects can be described in three ways: good, bad, and ugly. For instance it was GOOD that Marcus Williams, PG Uconn, fell to #22 for the Nets where he can learn from one of NBA's greats (Jason Kidd) and be prepared to take over when Kidd's time is done. However, things got BAD for the Trailblazers making more changes to the team during the draft than Michael Jackson does to his face, leaving the sports world baffled by its moves. As for the UGLY side of things just look to the Sonics who made absolutely no sense at all with their selection of Saer Sene with the #10 pick. For more on the Good, Bad, and Ugly of the NBA draft, scroll down with caution.
GOOD:
o Toronto: With no consensus #1 pick the Raptors did well with selecting Andrea Bargnani, 7'1 Forward Italy. Although he is a defensive liability he can score both inside and out. Teaming up with Bosh, Villanueva, and Peterson I feel as if his transition to the NBA will be fine.
o Chicago: The Bulls are a young team that thrives off its defense. With the addition of Tyrus Thomas and Thabo Sefolosha (6'7 Forward Switzerland), they were able to upgrade in the area of athleticism, length, and intensity. If you've paid attention to the Bulls in the past two years, you may have noticed that, those categories are keys to their success. Coupled with the scoring of Heinrich, Gordon, and Deng the Bulls can be deadly with the right veteran free-agent acquisition. Stay Tuned!
o Charlotte: With the #3 selection the Bobcats bypassed Gay and Roy for Morrison. At first glance I scratched my head wondering why MJ and Bob would pass on two athletic players for the man with the 'stache. Its simple, with Morrison's scoring ability the Bobcats finally have a go to guy. Felton is excellent at point, along with the interior presence of Okafor and May. One thing's for sure this team is built around passionate players and winners at the collegiate level, hopefully they can translate it to the NBA level.
o New Jersey: "One man's trash is another man's treasure." Just ask the Nets who were lucky to have Marcus Williams, PG and Josh Boone, PF (Uconn teammates) fall into their laps with the #22 & #23 picks. Williams has the chance of playing under the tutelage of Kidd so that he and Boone can continue the Nets tempo off the bench making them a much deeper team.
Honorable Mention: Orlando Magic, James Augustine and J.J. Redick- scoring relief for Dwight Howard & Co....Cleveland Cavaliers, Shannon Brown, and Daniel Gibson- Finally energetic guards that attacks the basket to help LeBron James.
o BAD
o Portland: Let me get this straight the Blazers ended the evening with the services of LaMarcus Aldridge and Brandon Roy, both via Draft day trades that didn't need to take place. That makes no sense having to send money to Chicago and Minnesota. Then end the round selecting Joel Freeland (6'10 F, England) when the likes of Paul Davis were still available. Who knew that even though there were no Prep Stars available, Portland would still find a way to screw things up. I guess that's why they had the fourth pick to begin with.
o Atlanta: The Hawks began the night selecting Shelden Williams, many disagreed but I actually like that pick. It was their second round pick I disagreed with. Why pick another 6'10 talent (Solomon Jones, So. Fla.) when Dee Brown, PG (two-time Wooden award Finalist) was available in the second round and could be the answer to their PG needs. Unless there is some movement during free agency, the Hawks could be in the lottery again in '07.
o Lakers: With the #26 pick many may feel as if there were no talent left in the "thin" draft. I may have agreed before the draft started, but the Lakers were a true disappointment drafting the UCLA product, Jordan Farmar. It seems as if he could do absolutely nothing for Kobe & Phil. I know I sound like a broken record but the likes of Paul Davis, Maurice Ager, or even the athletic James White would have been a better fit for the Lakers triangle. There's still free agency, and Kobe needs a big man bad!
o UGLY
o New York: Its only right that the Knicks complete their disappointing Eddy Curry trade/season with a horrendous draft. I must admit I was in favor of the trade (from the NY perspective) but it has done nothing but backfired sense then. The Knicks selected Renaldo Balkman #20, F South Carolina, and Mardy Collins #29, (another Guard) Temple, with the likes of Josh Boone, and Paul Davis still available. The team is guard heavy but weak in the frontcourt, they didn't address need or best available, maybe it wasn't Larry's fault after all?
o Minnesota: The Timberwolves seemed to have been headed in the right direction with the selection of Brandon Roy, G Washington, at # 6. But before I could picture him in a 'Wolves uniform it was announced that he was sent to Portland for the rights to Randy Foye, G Villanova. Many felt as if KG would have been complimented well with Roy, but now he must roll with Foye, he'll demand a trade much sooner than later.
o Rockets: First the Texans and now the Rockets! Yes, Houston selected 6'9 athletic freak in Rudy Gay, the perfect third option to Ming and McGrady, then sent him to Memphis for the polished Shane Battier. With the chronic back spasms of T-Mac it seemed only fitting that Gay was selected to slash and score on the wing to take some pressure off of McGrady's ailing back. Not again Houston, Not Again!
SPORTS VENTZ
Poker: Bluff Media, publisher of Bluff Magazine and Bluff Poker Radio will provide live coverage of the 2006 World Series of Poker on radio airways. I'm no Poker player but with this decision they must be Bluffing!
CWS: Another sports first for the year 2006! The Oregon State Beavers won its first College World Series title, defeating UNC 3-2, joining Miami Heat and Carolina Hurricanes as Sports First Champions. Look out football world the Texans could shock the world! Sike!
NFL: 4-year safety, Ed Reed, has reached an agreement on a 6-year extension with Baltimore to carry him through the 2012 season. Now if the Ravens can only figure out how to put up big numbers...oh yeah Steve McNair, but there's no pressure!
MLB: One of the game's purest, Hall-of-Fame analyst Peter Gammons is listed in good condition after undergoing an operation to treat a brain aneurysm on Tuesday. Our prayers go out to he and his family for a speedy recovery.
DUKE: DUKE= DUI! No I'm not teasing J.J. Redick, or the Lacrosse team, this time it's their "enforcer" the Athletic Director. Well, not quite but Joe Alleuva, Duke A.D., injured his head (42 stitches) during a boating accident. His son, Joseph Alleuva, former Duke baseball player, was charged with operating a boat while impaired. Now it makes sense, Duke can't keep its players under control because their A.D. can't keep his own son under control, he was also cited with a alcohol charge during his years at Duke ('98-'01).
BOXING: 4-time heavyweight champ Evander Holyfield (38-8-2) will return to the ring August 19 at American Airlines Arena in Dallas, his opponent is scheduled to be announced later today. Since boxers don't like to leave the sport, maybe there should be something like the senior tour in GOLF for aging boxers like Holyfield and Foreman. Better yet let's stop their old A** from boxing period!
NBA: Isaiah Thomas has one year to turn the Knicks around, says James Dolan. "He made this bed", I guess now he needs to buy all new linens because the one on this "bed" just don't fit. If not he'll be shopping for a new home to sleep in next year!
