THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WINS & LOSSES…Every great athlete has a mentor. Larry Fitzgerald leans on Chris Carter, and all Carter did was catch TDs.. Devin Hester’s mentor is Deion Sanders, so it’s no surprise how exciting Hester is when he touches the ball. On the hardwood, Deron Williams mentor is John Stockton, explaining Deron’s effortless execution of the pick-n-roll. And we all know Kobe mirrors Michael Jordan hence his clutch playing and champion pedigree. Before any of the current athletes become the best (and leaders) at what they do, they find the best individual to follow. The mentor is there to coach one through adversity, they’re the bridge between failure and success. In sports, athletes often watch “game film” of their opponents to discover mistakes teams made when facing the opponent as well as finding ways to defeat them. Remember, in life and in sports the difference between a winner and a loser is: a loser learns from HISmistake and a winner learns after YOURS…
NBA News & Notes:
As advertised NBA camps opened this week! The Lakers set to defend their title, while Artest defends his image and Odom defends his marriage! The Celtics simply want KG healthy for a chance to regain the title. The Magic added Vince Carter, Brandon Bass and even Jason “White Chocolate” Williams, to defend their Eastern Conference title. As for the Nuggets well they didn’t add much however J.R. Smith will assume the starting 2-guard position (after he serves a 7-game suspension). As for the Spurs, all they did was add Richard Jefferson and Antonio McDyess to a team that’s always among the elite. In Dallas, they’re prepping to host the 2010 All-Star by adding a former all-star in Shawn Marion. Each team has a story line but the final story written will be decided by their play on the court. Let’s tip things off with a breakdown of a division from each conference.
EAST: Central (predicted order of finish)
CAVALIERS- With the addition of Shaquille O’Neal the Cavs’ should be penciled in to capture the Central division title, however their goal is to win a NBA title. That will depend on a few things. 1. How focused is Delone West? After battling depression last season he arguably was the best player in the playoffs for the Cavs (not named LeBron). 2. How has LeBron’s jump shot developed? This point is key because Shaq will eventually clog up a lane that LeBron is use to having open to attack the basket. With Shaq’s presence on the court he will demand attention and demand touches! The two will work inside out, but the out isn’t effective if LeBron’s jumper hasn’t improved. Prediction: 62-20
BULLS- Many of you know my love affair with the Bulls is higher than the Sears Tower. But realistically they have no chance of dethroning the Cavs in the central so they will be playing for second. After the lost of their leading scorer for the past four seasons (Ben Gordon) it’s going to be up to Derrick Rose (and Luol Deng) to step up and shoulder the scoring load. We saw what Rose could do in the postseasons. But questions still linger around the health of Luol Deng, and the growth and development of young bigs Tyrus Thomas and Joakim Noah. There seems to be more questions then definite answers around the Bulls but after their first round defeat to the Celtics one would believe that they would take that experience and use it as a launch pad for the upcoming season. Prediction: 44-38
PISTONS- The Pistons had an interesting off-season. After being swept in the playoffs they officially cut ties with G Allen Iverson and signed G Ben Gordon away from their rivals across the Lake in the Bulls. They lost one of their staple pieces in F Rasheed Wallace and replaced him with F Charlie Villanueva (from another division rival in the Bucks). They will rely heavily on a three-guard rotation (Stuckey, Hamilton, Gordon) often playing alongside one another, Kwame Brown (stop laughing) as their center and yes Ben Wallace as their backup…(no really stop laughing). Needless to say the Pistons are in rebuilding mode but they do have enough scoring power to fight off the Bucks & Pacers. Problem is there’s only 1 ball for the 3 guards. Prediction: 40-42
PACERS- I like this young Pacers team however a big issue will be their youth. This is a scrappy team that will feature: T.J. Ford, Dahntay Jones, Danny Granger along with Brandon Rush, Roy Hibbert and Tyler Hansbrough. All are good at what they do solid defensively and Granger is a budding star. Only problem is no one truly draws a double team on the squad so while Granger has the ability to drop 30 on a giving night it will often be in a losing effort. Prediction: 38-44
BUCKS- Milwaukee always seems to be in “rebuilding” mode, with an aging Michael Redd and an injury prone Andrew Bogut coupled with the loss of Ramon Sessions, the Bucks are destined to self-destruct. Scott Skiles will have this team playing hard but the question is for how long? Prediction: 35-47
WEST: NorthWest
NUGGETS- Last season the Nuggets to the L by storm with their 2nd place finish out west and their fight in the Conference finals with the eventual Finals. This season they’ll have an opportunity to enter camp with Chauncey Billups and pick up where they left off in the ’09 playoffs. But one thing will be different this season. 3-point sensation J.R. Smith will be a starter this season (after the departure of defensive specialist Dahntay Jones). This will give the team a different look without Smith’s dynamic play off the bench. Instead that role will now be reserved for former UCLA Bruin, Arron Afflalo. I myself have concerns about this teams lack of depth but my biggest issue is J.R. in a starting role. Regardless they should have enough firepower to win the NorthWest, but is it enough to conquer the entire West? Prediction: 57-25
BLAZERS- Two years ago the Blazers showed the L they were on the verge of being a playoff team. Last season Greg Oden did his best to contribute and the young Blazers made the playoffs. This season they’ve added veteran PG Andre Miller in hopes of making the playoffs and actually winning a series. Interesting enough Miller himself has never won a series in his career. Its evident this team has a great mixture of talent but their lack of experience is hard to overcome in the competitive West. This team will be tougher this season but if they have to face the Lakers, Nuggets or Spurs in round 1 they still won’t know what it feels like to win a series. Prediction: 51-31
JAZZ- All summer long Carlos Boozer expressed his interest to play for a team NOT located in Utah. But as the Jazz enter training camp Boozer is still on the team. So before one can even imagine the Jazz being a formidable force in the West, the question that must first be answered is will Boozer remain a member of the Jazz? Some may think it doesn’t matter since he was injured most of the season but when you have the ability to post 20+ pts & 20+ reb against the Lakers in the playoffs, its still a big piece to Utah’s puzzle. Assuming he will remain (and play for a new contract) the Jazz will still play hard, run pick-n-rolls and backdoor plays as long as Coach Sloan is on the sideline. So regardless as to what one may think the Jazz opponents better walk into Salt Lake City with their lunch pails. Prediction: 48-34
THUNDER- The Thunder is in a catch 22, they are a good, solid, young team however that only means something if you’re in the East. This team has a great future behind Kevin Durant but to me many of their other pieces are not worthy of building into a contender. Then again neither was Scottie Pippen when he was initially drafted and he’ll be in the Hall of Fame next year. While I’m not ready to crown any of these players as future HOFers, I am saying that this team will be exciting to watch and will lose a lot of close games. Prediction: 30-52
WOLVES- I won’t waste your time (or better yet my time typing) Prediction: 22-60
NFL News & Notes
*VICK is Just Do-ing IT! Not quite on the field but definitely in the boardrooms. After being indicted 2 years ago, one of the first sponsors to bail on the star was shoe monopoly NIKE. But after his triumph return, the Eagles are no longer the only organization to step up and show that they believe in second chances. For many MV7 fans this is a great day for a man that has paid his debt to society and do all that he can to regain much of what he lost. To the Vick haters well this is just another log on their fire. Let It Burn my friends!
1. (2-1) CHARGERS @ (1-2) STEELERS- The Chargers are a sloppy 2-1 and yet the Steelers lack of finishing games in the 4th quarter have them looking like a well-deserved 1-2 team (despite their Champion label). So with no L.T. for the Chargers and no Polamalu for the Steelers, what will be the difference? Phillip Rivers! Rivers will have to attack the gaping hole left by Troy Polamalu in the secondary. The Steelers are currently experiencing a Super Bowl hangover and the Chargers will not be the aspirin they need to get over it. Prediction: Chargers by 3
2. (2-1) COWBOYS @ (3-0) BRONCOS-This game will be interesting the Cowboys have looked like three different teams in their first 3 games. As for the Broncos, luck is seemingly on their side as their unblemished record shows. After two straight games in Jerry’s World the ‘Boys will take their show to the Mile High City and make an attempt to hand Denver their first loss of the season. With an injured Felix Jones and a questionable Marion Barber, Dallas’ success will depend solely on the arm of Tony Romo. If you have Jason Witten in fantasy football please start him because he may have 10 catches this week. I digress, something tells me that Denver’s 3-0 starts is a fraud and they will soon be exposed. Don’t get me wrong I don’t hate Orton but I don’t believe in him either. Prediction: Cowboys by 7
3. (2-1) BENGALS @ (0-3) BROWNS-Please pay attention this game has LET DOWN FACTOR written all over it. Cincy is coming off the huge win over the Steelers heading into the battle of Ohio. Meanwhile the Browns have nothing to lose and will enter Sunday’s game with QB Derek Anderson taking over for Brady Quinn. All strategy will be thrown out the window, the gloves will be taken off and these guys won’t be fighting fair. The Browns would love to get a win and the Bengals may get caught up still relishing in their victory of the Steelers. This game will be entertaining and one that may be settle by a field goal. Prediction: Browns by 3
4. (3-0) JETS @ (3-0) SAINTS:This game will serve as the ultimate clash between a dynamic Offense and a great Defense. The difference is normally in two phases. 1. QB play. I know many NFL fans have fallen in love with Mark Sanchize but we all know that Drew Brees strikes fear in secondary and throws 400+ yards in his sleep. As for Mark he’s still learning on the job so it’s up to his defense to put him in short field situations giving him a better chance to win. The other key phase involved is location. This game will be played in New Orleans and their dome will be rocking. This game will be exciting if you pick up your phone to send a tweet you may miss the play of the game! Prediction:Saints by 4
5. (3-0) RAVENS @ (2-1) PATRIOTS: The Ravens have actually been winning more because of their offense as opposed to their defense (okay Ray Lewis did single handedly win a game in week 2) but Joe Flacco threw for 300+ yards in week 1 & 3. That stat is not characteristic for the Ravens and its something they shouldn’t make a habit out of. The Patriots love being involved in shootouts because they have a guy named Brady and a guy named Moss. Those two are salivating at a chance to explode and a match up of this magnitude provides the perfect stage. The Pats have struggled offensively but with Wes Welker back in the lineup look for Brady & Moss to finally arrive in the ’09 season. Prediction: Patriots by 5
6. (2-1) PACKERS @ (3-0) VIKINGS:As a proud fan of the NFC North I will definitely have my popcorn ready on Monday Night. Two teams that I love to hate will have another reason to destroy one another: Brett Favre. The Packers are sick and tired of playing in his shadow and the Vikings want to prove he’s the missing link to their championship puzzle. So what will give you ask? Adrian Peterson and the home crowd. There are no Xs and Os when it comes to this match up, just emotions and solid play. These two will probably find themselves in a aerial battle with Favre doing his best to teach his ex-student in Aaron Rodgers one more lesson. If you have a prior commitment, then cancel it this game will be worth the 3 hours. Prediction: Vikings by 1

Just A Thought…
CRITIQUE or COMPLIMENT…which would you prefer? Everyone loves to be told nice things about themselves, even if they already know/heard these things. But what about something you never knew about yourself (or something you’ve ignored). The thing is no one in life is perfect so WE can all use being critiqued from time to time. In fact a person who seeks critiquing is the one that will ultimately be complimented on their hard work and results. No ball player perfected a jump shot, learned the perfect form tackle and caught up to hitting the toughest curve balls because they were complimented there whole life. In fact, none of those things would have ever been accomplished without a critique. Whether you’re on the job or simply practicing on your passion or craft never shy away from a critique. After all, one can learn more from a critique than they ever could from a compliment.
NBA News & Notes:
Where Will Amazing Happen This Year: With NBA Training Camps beginning as early as Saturday, the start of the NBA season is right around the corner. Players have been U-Streaming (Starbury), writing books (Chris Paul), releasing movies (LeBron James) and yes getting hitched (Lamar Odom, still can’t believe this one). Starting next week I will begin to break down teams (division –by-division) in an attempt to predict the order of finish, individual accolades and eventual NBA Champions. Stay tuned.
NFL News & Notes
*7TH HEAVEN? After being away from the game of football for 2 years, Michael Vick and his spectacular antics will return to the field this Sunday. When Vick was approached about this opportunity he stated that, “this is a dream come true to me.” It’s funny hearing a guy who was once the highest paid player in the NFL make this statement, but one can understand where he’s coming from. With McNabb still nursing a fractured rib it’s likely he won’t play. Vick will not be starting in his place but one can assume he will be used in “Wildcat” formation. “I was the Wildcat originator,” Vick said. “So it’s not foreign territory to me.” And that is what fans cannot wait to see out of Vick. Now I must say its been a minutes since he’s played with the “Varsity” players so it may take a few weeks for the spectacular plays to return, in fact Vick submitted us all a warning. “I understand Superman may not be ready to return.” He said smiling. “But he will in the future.” Oh Thank Heaven for #7!
STAT OF WEEK: Since 1990, 160 teams began the season 0-2. Only 22 of the teams reached the playoffs. With that said, the Lions, Rams, Bucs, Panthers, Chiefs, Browns, Dolphins, Jaguars and Titans. Of these teams the only one I can see making the playoffs is the Titans, because of their tough defense and run game. As for everyone else get ready for the 2010 draft.
FANTASY FOOTBALL INJURY REPORT:
*QB MATT HASSELBECK (Seahawks)- Hasselbeck is suffering from a broken rib (like McNabb) and while its unlikely that he will play this Sunday (vs. Bears) he is “doing all he can” to return this Sunday. If you were trying to figure out what to do my advice would be to bench him this week. Even if Matt does play the chances of the Bears “D” aggravating that broken rib or forcing him into turnovers is very likely. Besides the Seahawks have so many injured players they can’t afford to lose their leader for a long period of time so one week seems likely.
*QB DONOVAN McNABB (Eagles)- After missing the last game with a fractured rib, McNabb sat out of practice Wednesday. With Michael Vick being activated to the roster this gives Andy Reid and the Eagles another weapon to at least use in the Wildcat formation. McNabb wants to play (like every other NFL player) but all signs point to No. Stay away from Mc5 this week, as he’s likely to sit out against the 0-2 Chiefs.
*RB ADRIAN PETERSON: The NFL leading rusher was limited in practice due to a sore back. A.P. did take a nice shot in the back against the Lions that’s probably got him pretty sore. But something tells me when the Vikings visit the 49ers he’ll magically be 100% again and running wild. Until you see A.P. listed as OUT on the injury report you’ve got to start him!
*WR WES WELKER: Tom Brady’s “easy” button in Welker missed last Sunday’s game with a knee injury. As a result, the Patriots never reached the end zone. Welker is expected to play this Sunday vs. the Falcons so look for Brady to lean on Welker to open things up for Moss down the field. I know Brady struggled last week but one has to expect him to get things going this week at home and Welker will be a big reason for the passing game’s success. He’s a must start!
NFL: PICK 6! WEEK 3 Predictions: Week 2 was a bit rough. I went 3-3 in my Pick 6 predictions, however my upset special (Bears OVER Steelers) was correct and kept my head above mediocre waters. Here’s a look into week 3 of the NFL.
1. (2-0) FALCONS @ (1-1) PATRIOTS- One of the NFC’s most balanced teams in the Falcons will travel East to face the Pats. Atlanta coming off two convincing home wins will face a Patriots team that has holes on defense and timing still seems to be off on “O”. Look for New England to be more polished at every facet of the game after nearly beginning the season 0-2. Their first two games were against division foes so one has to expect the outings to be tough. As for the Falcons they run the ball to open up passing lanes for Matty Ice. However, against a Belichick scheme things will have to be mixed up. Thing is I’m sure the Falcons will be leaning on Michael Turner and Tony Gonzalez to keep Brady & Co. off the field. If the Falcons can when the Time of Possession game they have a chance to get the W. As for the Patriots they’ve got to convert more 3rd Downs to put pressure on the young Matt Ryan to make plays with his arm. This should be a very good game. Prediction: Patriots by 4
2. (0-2) PANTHERS @ (1-1) COWBOYS-Last season the Panthers had the best record in the NFC and now they can’t seem to win a game. As for the Cowboys more attention has been set on the jumbotron in “Jerry’s World” than it has been on the potential for the Cowboys to reach the Super Bowl. Tony Romo looked great against the Bucs’ then went back to Tony “Oh-No” against the Giants and their tough front 7. Many critics (including Cowboys great Tony Dorsett) have called Romo out so I expect for him to bounce back on Monday Night against Carolina. As for the Panthers Jake Delhomme has thrown 10 interceptions in his last 3 games (dating back to the playoffs) and the Panthers running game has not been as effective as it once was. If Carolina can get Stewart & Williams going on the ground things may become a bit easier for Delhomme in the air. As for the Cowboys they rushed for over 200 yards against the Giants but could not overcome Romo’s three INT’s. So which QB can make fewer mistakes under the bright lights? My guess is Tony Romo, but that’s assuming his team wins the rushing game. Prediction: Cowboys by 3
3. (2-0) COLTS @ (1-1) CARDINALS-If you love an aerial attack you should be glued to the television on Sunday night. The Peyton Manning’s will travel to Arizona to take on a Cardinals team that lives and dies by their aerial attack. Two former Super Bowl MVP’s will face off in the desert. Now that the table has been set let’s make on thing clear, no one and I mean NO ONE can orchestrate a passing attack like the great Peyton “Cannon” Manning!!! I know Warner has two great wideouts in Fitzgerald & Boldin but Kurt is the x-factor due to his fight against father time! This game will be very entertaining and while I admit this is a trap game for the Colts after facing the ball controlling wildcat Dolphins Monday night and now will be faced with stopping the Cards’ passing attack in the desert but as many saw on Monday all Manning need is a quarter to win a game. So why should things be different this time around? Prediction: Colts by 6
4. (1-1) STEELERS @ (1-1) BENGALS:The AFC North will feature a battle between the hard-hitting Steelers and the never know what you’re gonna get Bengals. Pittsburgh is coming off a lost against the Bears (in Chicago) whereas the Bengals are fresh off a victory against the Packers (in Green Bay) so how will things play out this week (in Cincinnati)? Pittsburgh’s biggest problem is that they can’t run the ball. Due to their inability to rely on their running game leads to more time for their defense (minus Polamalu) to remain on the field. If the Steelers can’t control the clock this will allow Palmer & Co. to attack the Steelers secondary. As for the Bengals, they showed how effective their running game could be on the shoulders of RB Cedric Benson. Benson seems to be motivated as a rusher and he’s showing why the Bears drafted him so high. If the Bengals can continue to move the ball on the ground Chad OchoCinco will be doing his best to make Steelers corners “kiss the baby.” This game will be entertaining but if things stay close the overall better team will come out with the W. Prediction:Steelers by 5
5. (0-2) TITANS @ (2-0) JETS:I don’t know what’s more surprising to me. The fact that the Titans are winless or the Jets are undefeated. Granted it’s only week 3 of the season but last year the Titans didn’t lose a game until week 12 and the Jets seem seasoned despite the fact that a rookie is running the offense. But this is when adjustments are made. The Jets will be facing the L.D.F. better known as the Let Down Factor. After coming off the big win against division rival Patriots, the Jets will welcome the Titans (coming off two close crushing losses) to Giants stadium to see whose record is truly a reflection of their team. The Titans defense will place pressure on the young Sanchez like he’s never seen thus far and the Titans run game will keep Rex Ryan’s blitzing attack off balanced. The Jets have to be careful about this one because the Titans know that a 0-3 start spells N-F-L Lottery! Something no team wants to face this early in the season. Prediction: Titans by 10
6. (2-0) 49ers @ (2-0) VIKINGS:Here is the preview of the NFC Championship game…okay so I’m only joking but by the looks of their record some weird journalist will begin a story with those very words this week. The Niners revamped defense lead by LB Patrick Willis will visit the Vikings and attempt to slow down Adrian Peterson. So far the ‘Niners have looked more impressive at 2-0 than their opponents (Vikings). I expect San Fran to be motivated to prove to the NFL world that they are serious this year and can easily be the Cardinals to squeak out their division and surprise some team(s) in the postseason. Keep your eyes on the scores scrolling across the screen Sunday, the final may shock you.Prediction: Vikings by 3

THOUGHTFUL THURSDAY
By: Kevin Cottrell Jr.
Just A Thought…
MOTIVATION…Ever felt like you've done your best and wasn't properly rewarded? Ever stop to think, "what else could I do to get noticed? Ever felt dejected? Ever get frustrated and lose sight of your goals? Ever fall victim to "politics" of a particular culture? Ever felt overlooked? Ever been doubted? Ever felt like no one respected you? Ever thought, what is it that your counterpart may be doing that you're not, to succeed? Ever got sick and tired of being sick and tired? Ever wanted to prove all your doubters wrong so badly that you couldn't sleep at night? Are you ever satisfied? Ever been eager to become the Best and what you do?? So did Michael Jordan, and you see where all that got him...in your everyday walk of life whenever you face adversity use it as a stepping stone and not stumbling block...Whether its school, work or athletics if you work hard enough you too can fly high like his Airness! From now on don’t think…Just Do It!
NBA News & Notes
*Amare Stoudemire on 2010 Free Agency:“Just gonna weigh the options out and see how it goes. I think this is definitely a very important year not only for myself, but for the team as well. If we’re making strides and making the playoffs, which we are, and we’re getting better, than it’s only right to hang around. “ …In other words when they fall short of the playoffs let the free-agency games begin!
NFL News & Notes
*Madden Curse? Before opening night could conclude the “Madden Curse” seem to strike again! The Steelers All-Pro Safety, Troy Polamalu, seem to pull off the play of the week with his one handed (left at that) interception but he eventually would leave the game with a sprain MCL. Fortunately for Steelers fans he’ll only be out for 3-6 weeks and not much longer.
*IN HIBERNATION: The Chicago Bears opened its regular season on Sunday Night in Lambeau Field against its rivals. While bad blood and hard hits is to be expected in a match-up of this magnitude the Bears would lose the heart and soul of its defense in
Brian Urlacher. The Middle LB dislocated his right wrist and was eventually placed on Injured Reserve (so he will miss the entire season). What you want see on the injury report is Bears QB Jay Cutler who is reported to have a “bruised ego” after tossing 4 Interceptions…
*EAGLES LANDING? As for the Philadelphia Eagles they lost their leader in QB Donovan McNabb to a fractured rib after scoring a rushing TD. The Eagles however signed veteran Jeff Garcia and activated Michael Vick so regardless as to how long McNabb will sit they have plenty of guys to fill the void under center.
*POWDER BLUE(S)? There was some question as to why LaDanian Tomlinson was on the sideline for most of the fourth quarter and mainly on the final scoring drive. Rumors swirled that it was signs that the team was moving in the “Sproles” direction but that couldn’t be further from the truth. L.T. was sidelined for a sprained ankle and apparently the ESPN sideline crew didn’t pick that up because Mike Golic and Steve Young were too busy trying to prove who had more “NFL Knowledge” in the booth!
NFL: PICK 6! WEEK 2 Predictions: Week 1 I finished with a 4-2 record. I was snubbed by a late Steelers rally and Cutler’s 4 INTs. This week will be a bit tougher but I’m sure we can tackle the competition!
1. (0-1) PANTHERS @ (1-0) FALCONS-The only QB to play worse than Jay Cutler in week 1 was Panthers QB Jake Delhomme. Jake threw 5 picks and had a fumble that was returned for a TD. That’s 9 picks in the last two games that he’s played which means mentally he’s trying to make all things better in his very next throw! If Coach Fox can’t establish the run in the Georgia Dome this will be another long Sunday for Carolina. The Falcons seem to click at every facet of the game against the ‘Fins. New acquisition TE Tony Gonzalez seems to be right at home with the rejuvenated “dirty birds”. Last season NFC South teams all failed to win a game on the road in the division. The way things are looking for both teams I find it hard to believe things will change this week. Prediction: Falcons by 4
2. (1-0) PATRIOTS @ (1-0) JETS- Question? Which is easier to believe, a struggling PATS “O” with Brady, Moss & Welker or a dominating JETS team led by rookie QB Mark Sanchez? Still puzzled? Don’t worry because this Sunday things will go back to normal. While the Patriots looked a bit rusty on offense and was exposed defensively one has to believe that a week of preparation and game film will allow the Brady Bunch to get their timing down. As for the J-E-T-S, they seem to have most of their attention focused on saving face for their new head coach Rex Ryan. Ryan has stated that he’s not interested in kissing Bill Belichick’s rings, blah blah blah, but no one ever said he had too. The fact of the matter is he’s doing all he can to protect his young QB by thrusting himself in the spotlight to avoid Sanchez for handling the NY Media for a few days. That’s all fine and dandy but the game must go on when things kick off at the Meadowlands. And when the Patriots begin to light up the score board the only thing the Jets can do to respond is passing the ball, this could spell disaster for the rook Prediction: Patriots by 10
3. (1-0) SAINTS @ (1-0) EAGLES-In week 1 it seemed as if Drew Brees completed a pass to everyone but himself and Chris Paul! Brees’ 6 TD performance made fantasy owners rejoice across the nation however this is reality! The reality is that the Saints will travel to a hostile Eagles stadium and welcomed by a defense that will pressure Brees by any means necessary. With the health of McNabb in question Philly will give the Saints various looks to keep their defense on their heels and on the field. The key to this game will be time of possession. If the Eagles can keep this stat in their favor they should succeed in bringing Brees out of the video game world and back to the turf. This is a tough game to call but someone has to win, why not be the…Prediction: Eagles by 1
4. (0-1) CARDINALS @ (0-1) JAGUARS:The Cardinals fell short against their NFC West foe 49ers. They travel to Jacksonville to play another 0-1 team looking to get there first win of the season. The Cards seem to be rusty on offense and the Jags seem to not have much of an offense at all. The team that can get their passing attack going will have the better opportunity at getting the W. With that said I’m willing to place my Mac on Larry Fitzgerald & Anquan Boldin. Prediction: Cardinals by 7
5. (1-0) GIANTS @ (1-0) COWBOYS: Prediction: The tough NFC East is back at it again! The Giants & Cowboys both looked pretty impressive in week 1 and the winner of this match-up would have a great head start on the division race. The Giants are fresh off defeating the ‘Skins and the Cowboys simple demolished Tampa. So which was more impressive? I’d have to say…the Giants. The biggest reason is the health of Osi Umenyiora. Not only did Osi play with his usual high motor for 60 minutes but he managed to sack, strip and recover a ball for a TD that had him back to his ’07 form. The Cowboys on the other hand had a 5th pre-season game of some sorts as they dominated a young rebuilding Bucs squad. Nevertheless Tony Romo seems to mesh well with his revamped receiving corps (mainly Roy Williams). But now things are different. The two NFC East titans will meet in the new Texas Stadium in front of 100K fans eager to see the ‘Boys return to prominence. The Giants defense seems to be fast and strong as usual and their RB tandem of Jacobs & Bradshaw are powerful and speedy. As for the Cowboys they won’t be considered a contender until they can pick apart this Giants “D”. Unfortunately that’s easier said than done. Look for Eli Manning to earn his new contract this week guiding those young receivers up and down the field. Prediction: Giants by 7
6. (1-0) RAVENS @ (1-0) CHARGERS: Just when we all (well not me) wanted to label Joe Flacco a “fluke” he turned in his first 300-yard passing game of his career to begin the ’09 season. As for the Chargers just when many experts (including myself) wanted to “Crown ‘em”(Dennis Green voice) they nearly laid an egg on Monday Night against the Raiders! L.T. is hurt (again) and Merriman seems to be still dragging that repaired knee. So the Ravens are a sure-fire pick, right? Not quite. The Ravens will take their unpredictable offense across country and face a Chargers team that still has a lot to prove after being manhandled at the line of scrimmage versus the (gulp) Rai-duhs. This will definitely be a hard-hitting game and not many points will be scored. The key to victory in this game will be special teams and field position. If I had to choose one I’d definitely go with Darren Sproles & Co. for the Chargers. It seems like no matter what Sproles will find a hole. This game may be low scoring but emotions will run high and look for QB Phillip Rivers to go all Phillip Riiiiivers (LL Cool J Voice) on the Ravens to win on by a field goal! Prediction: Chargers by 3

Just A Thought…
GREAT…How does one define it? The average person may measure greatness by obtaining their highest goal, becoming a millionaire and some women may say giving birth without pain is great…The dictionary defines it as “having unusual merit, extraordinary powers, expert, the best.” All these adjectives sums up the word “great”, but if you ask Michael Jordan to define great he may hand you his resume. For MJ23, great was being cut from his High School basketball team then bouncing back by earning a scholarship to play for the University of North Carolina. Great was hitting a game-winner as a freshman to win the 1982 National Title…After that he only got better and was named 1984 College Player of the year which led to him being drafted by the Chicago Bulls (to the Blazers dismay) where he became the heart beat of the heartland of America. But what made this all great was when he returned to campus in 1986 to complete his degree…What else was great? Great was being named 1985 Rookie of the Year, great was breaking his foot just 18 games into his second season then returning to average a career high 37.1 ppg in his third season. Great was using his God giving talents to defy gravity and being tabbed as “Air Jordan.” Great is a 2x Dunk Champ, 14x All-Star, an NBA record 10 Scoring Titles. Great is using the same energy that allowed him to excel on offense to be named to 9 All-Defense (First) Teams. Great was finally defeating the Pistons and capturing 3 NBA Titles (3 Finals MVPs). Great was retiring when he thought he had nothing left to prove, began to play professional baseball in his slain father’s honor, then after 18 months returning to the NBA (dropping 55 in Madison Square Garden) and win 3 more NBA Titles (3 more Finals MVPs). Great is being named NBA MVP 5x (not more because they wanted to spread the award around), 1x Defensive Player of the Year, earning 2 Gold Medals and anchoring a 72-win team (at the age of 32). Great was being the only 2 Guard to be the leader of a dynasty without the services of another Great big man! Great was watching his leaping ability fade and him perfect the “fade away.” It’s being named one of the 50 greatest players of all-time. Great is becoming a marketing icon serving as a pitchman for Wheaties, Hanes, Gatorade and releasing 23 pairs of his own “Air Jordan sneakers.” In the end his greatness achieved 32, 292 points 6,672 rebounds and 5,633 assists. September 11th the Pro Basketball Hall of Fame will honor his greatness…but his competitive flame is still burning an he won’t rest until he molds the Charlotte Bobcats into a champion. Sure you’re shaking your head in disbelief at this potential accomplishment but his High School basketball coach will be in the crowd on Friday doing the exact same thing…
NBA News & Notes
*DAY 72: Iverson’s ANSWER…After approximately 2 months & 12 days of the same Iverson question being asked, it seems as if he finally has an answer. Memphis will be the 34-year-old vets new home for the 2009-10 season. A.I., known for setting trends, broke the news via his twitter page (sorry ESPN). Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, here are a few more questions that needs to be answered…
Why Memphis? According to Iverson, “God Chose Memphis…”, while I’m not questioning his faith the truth is, like T.O., it was his ONLY option. After failing to be the Iverson of old in Detroit, NBA brass turned elsewhere for a veteran guard presence.
Why was Memphis interested? Easy, ticket sales! The Grizzles built a beautiful stadium on Beale Street (FedEx Forum) where they averaged 12,000 fans during last season. The University of Memphis basketball team packs the arena out with no problem (with or without D. Rose). So the signing was done with the hope that fans will rush out to buy tickets, jerseys and anything else with the powder blue Grizzlies logo on it.
Will It Work? Basketball wise, NO. The core rotation consists of Zach Randolph, Rudy Gay, O.J. Mayo and Iverson. All of the players are only effective with the ball in their hands and none of them ever come across half court to play on the defensive end. Simply put this is a train wreck waiting to happen. Business wise, YES. The only thing popular in Memphis is BBQ, Three Six Mafia and First 48 (shout out to the lady detective w/a Gap). So fans will be excited to see the future hall-of-famer make things exciting even though they’re destined for failure.
*FAB 5: HAWKS…Many of you are aware of some of the things I do on every other day than THURSDAY w/NBA Digital…Here’s the latest clip from C. Webb’s FAB 5 on NBA.com…Check Us Out!!
*Blame it on the Alcohol? Earlier in the week it was reported that Chargers LB Shawne Merriman was arrested for assaulting his reality TV girlfriend “Tila Tequila”. Merriman claims she was inebriated and attempting to drive. So he did what any friend would do, choke her by any means necessary so she would get behind the wheel!! Okay, so maybe he didn’t. but then again maybe she wasn’t drunk. Ms. Tequila stated that she’s actually allergic to alcohol so there’s no way she could have even been drinking…hmm what does one believe? Merriman was suspend for steroid use, so ‘roid rage could explain his actions. Then again, her claim to fame is “A SHOT at love with tila TEQUILA” yet she’s allergic to alcohol. All of this drama is stressing me out, where’s the Patron when you need it?? Stay tuned!
*Father Time is Undefeated! Since 1990 only 5 QB’s over 35 have gone 2 straight years without missing a start. The odds states that Matt Leinart, Vince Young and Tarvaris Jackson will all be playing at some time this season…
NFL: PICK 6! WEEK 1 Predictions:
1. TITANS @ STEELERS- The defending champs will kick-off the season tonight at Heinz Field against the “Terrible Towel’ stomping Titans. The Steelers are returning 21 of 22 starters from their Super Bowl roster. The Titans are returning with a chip on their shoulder pads along with the motivation to play for Steve McNair. All eyes across the nation will be on this game so expect big hits, heavy dose of the run game and a tightly played game. The key to success will be in the run game. The Titans have a slimmer (yet powerful) LenDale White and the explosive Chris Johnson. Pittsburgh has two question marks in Willie Parker & Rashard Mendenhall. It’s one thing to win the Super Bowl but its another thing to play in 16 Super Bowls the following season. Prediction: Titans by 4
2. EAGLES @ PANTHERS-Believe it or not this game has playoff implications! Both teams hail from divisions that did not have a team finish below .500 in ’08. Which means in the event the Eagles & Panthers are in a wild card battle the potential tiebreaker would be in head-to-head wins. The Panthers running game seemed to be very effective in the pre-season and the Eagles seemed to struggle finding Brian Dawkins (hitting presence) at the safety position. This could pose as an issue for Philly. But the determining factor in this one will be the QB’s. Delhomme seems to be on the downside of his career and McNabb is motivated like never before to get a two-week head start on the anticipated arrival of one Michael Vick. Look for McNabb to throw the ball 30+ times moving the chains forcing Carolina to get away from their effective ground game. This game will be intense a definite must see at the 1 pm time slot! Prediction: Eagles by 6
3. BEARS @ PACKERS- Sunday Night the Football nation will be treated to a pleasant NFC North surprise, a old-fashioned shootout! A division known for running between the tackles, black & blue-smash-mouth-football, will be in store for a couple of gunslingers for the oldest rivalry in the NFL. When Lovie Smith took the job as Bears head coach he immediately stated his goal of consistently beating the hated Packers. The past 5 seasons Chicago is 4-1 at Lambeau Field. (During/after Favre). As for Green Bay they have a year under their belts with Aaron Rodgers calling the shots and although they struggled last season the team has confidence in their QB. As for the Defense, they’re transitioning from a 4-3 to a 3-4 scheme, which could take some time getting use to for the cheese heads. Their dynamic defensive end Aaron Kampan will no longer be in a 3-point stance rushing off the edge but instead in position as on outside LB, this will create match up problems for both teams. In the end, the Bears have more to prove going for broke to acquire Cutler, look for a more balanced Bears offense while the Packers continue to make adjustments on the defensive side of the ball.Prediction: Bears by 3
4. JAGUARS @ COLTS:No Dungy. No Marvin. No Problem. The Colts always seem to manage to adjust to any shortcomings during the course of a season, this time they had the entire off-season to adjust to the loss of both Tony Dungy and Marvin Harrison. The Jaguars however seems to be in a short term rebuilding mode, cutting ties with their top 3 receivers from last year along with Fred Taylor with the hopes that RB Maurice Jones-Drew can carry the load. With the Colts at home on their customized fast track at Lucas Oil Stadium, look for the reigning MVP (yes Manning was the MVP) to get HIS offense off to a fast start getting all parties involved early and often. There are question marks on the Colts’ defense but the cover 2 can hide a replacement (or two in the secondary) as long as the front 7 applies to proper pressure to David Garrard & MJD. This is another division rival game to open the first weekend so expect fireworks! Prediction: Colts by 10
5. DOLPHINS @ FALCONS:This is probably the most intriguing match-up of opening weekend, between two teams that had 11 wins (and early playoff exits). Many “experts” look for one (or both) teams to fall off their horse and back down to mediocrity in ’09. If I had to guess which team that would be I’d have to say it would be the ‘Fins. They haven’t made any obvious additions to their team that thrived off of 90 Wildcat plays in ’08. Teams will be well prepared for their college style offense and will force players like Ted Ginn Jr. to beat them downfield. As for the Falcons all they did was add one of the greatest Tight Ends in history to their roster in Tony Gonzalez. Matt Ryan now has Roddy White, Gonzalez, Michael Turner and Jerious Norwood as viable weapons at his disposal. Ryan seems to be well ahead of his time, look for the Falcons to be energized by their Georgia Dome crowd as they’ll pull out all stops to get off to a fast start this season. Prediction: Falcons by 7
6. BILLS @ PATRIOTS: This is the game we’ve all been waiting for. The chance for Tom Brady to return after missing last season with an injury. The debut for T.O. in a Bills uniform as he’ll face off with his “era based” rival, Randy Moss. The Patriots have just traded away one of their staples on defense so look for them to use their offensive passing attack to fill the holes left on defense. As for the Bills, they’ll unveil their new (and hopefully improved) no huddle offense. One that is a work in progress. T.O. missed the last 4 pre-season games nursing his big T.O.E!!! And the Bills starting RB Marshawn Lynch will only contribute in this game by playing Madden ’10 while he begins to serve his 3-game suspension. The fact that Moss & Owens will again be on the same field on Monday Night Football is exciting but I’m sure that’s where the parallels will end and the T.O. Show: Season 2 will begin! Prediction: Patriots by 17
III. SAY WHAT!!! (Tweets of the Week)

Just A Thought…
BEWARE OF THE KILLER BEE…For the past three years I’ve submitted my weekly installments of “Thoughtful Thursday”, to shed my light on the world of sports and to also use sports as a metaphor to life. The inspiration behind my weekly blog stems from the words of wisdom provided by Rev Run. So of course it was a pleasure to have an opportunity to thank him yesterday during a book signing. With that said one of my favorite Rev Run quotes came to mind for this week’s edition of TT. Since we were young we’ve been taught to never hold a grudge. Yet the older we are it seems as if we hold our grudges longer! Take the Denver Broncos, new head coach Josh McDaniels got off on a bad note with his franchise QB (Jay Cutler) words exchanged, grudges were held and it eventually led to a bad divorce. As the Coach many felt McDaniels was out of order and needed to smooth things out prior to camp. Not only did that not happen but also it seems as if Coach McDaniels has now alienated his franchise receiver (Brandon Marshall) and he too wants to part like the Red Sea. As its been proven in the past holding a grudge isn’t worth the energy exerted to do so. So, search for that inner child in you whenever you feel like you’re holding a grudge and laugh it off like any other 8-year-old with their lips poked out because its bed time. Remember in sports and in life, “To carry a grudge is like being stung to death by one bee.”- Rev Run.
NBA News & Notes
*RUBIO RANSOM…In April, the Minnesota Timberwolves drafted two point guards back-to-back. Johnny Flynn (Syracuse) & Ricky Rubio (Spain). Rubio was viewed as the second coming of Pistol Pete Mariavich and Wolves fans rejoiced that he would soon arrive to help rebuild their franchise. Then that day never came. Rubio has stated that his buyout from his Spanish team is too large for the Wolves to handle and therefore he would feel more comfortable playing in Barcelona for the next two years prior to his attempt at an NBA career. Hmmm? I know the kid is only 18 but he did enter his name in the NBA draft, correct? Rubio did compete against the likes of Chris Paul, Deron Williams and Jason Kidd in the Summer Olympics, right? Well, why is he “really” not coming to the L. Is it because a big market team didn’t draft him where he would flourish in a wide-open system (like New York Knicks)? I thought so. Look kid the NBA is a MAN’S game so if you think you’re not big enough to compete with the big dogs then say so. But to turn down the Wolves because you don’t want to buy a North Face coat just proves to us all that you’re as soft as tissue paper!
*Day 65:IVERSON ANSWERSQ&A…The past two months we’ve been weighing team options for Allen Iverson. From Memphis to Miami or L.A. (Clippers) to Charlotte one can only guess where the first ballot Hall-of-Famer will land. Well NBA-TV’s Eric Snow set down with his former backcourt mate to get the “Answers” to our questions…
*BRADY UNVEILS LOGO: First Jordan created the Jumpan Logo. And before that Jerry West was the NBA logo. Tiger Woods as the (TW), Roger Federer has the “RF” collection and now Tom Terrific has unveiled his new likeness. Apparently the logo is a TB12, seems to be a bit much to me I mean you don’t see “Peyton Manning” with a logo! But then again you don’t see Peyton with a Brazilian model either…
*MARSHALL LAW: By now many of you have seen the temper-tantrum video of Brandon Marshall lashing out in practice because he’s unhappy with his current contract. He’s entering the final year of a deal that would pay him $2.2Million. Marshall has caught 100+ passes the past 2 seasons so he feels as if he should be paid like the elite (Larry Fitzgerald, Randy Moss, etc.) and many would agree…just not the Broncos. So, its been rumored that the JETS are interested in the disgruntled wideout but Denver’s asking price may be too steep. Who knows, no one expected Jay Cutler to leave the Mile High City so if you’re going to get wet, they might as well swim! Bye bye Brandon!!
*RICKY’S RETIRMENT PLAN- Since Ricky Williams returned to the Dolphins last season he has quietly performed at a high level and recently signed an extension thru the 2010 season. Shockingly he told the Miami Herald that once he contract ends he will retire. Not surprising since he already retired once (because he preferred to smoke weed) but something tells me when the Patriots come calling to sign a player away from their division rival Ricky will have a few more million reasons to chase a Lombardi Trophy…
*STAFFORD VS SANCHEZ: Last season Matt Ryan (Falcons) and Joe Flacco (Ravens) assumed the starting QB role in their rookie seasons and both led their teams to the playoffs. This year Matthew Stafford (Lions) and Mark Sanchez (Jets) hope to accomplish the same feat. But the situations are different. For the Lions they are totally in rebuilding mode. While Stafford will have a few chances to wow fans connecting with Calvin Johnson downfield, Matt will have a tougher time staying on his feet behind such a sub par “O” Line. As for Sanchez, Rex Ryan has focused on building a better defense (which always helps a young QB) and there’s already a solid running game in place with Thomas Jones & Leon Washington. However, the New England Patriots will develop various schemes with hopes of confusing the youngster while other teams will probably blitz the rookie the majority of the time. While both teams have high hopes the reality is Matty Ice & Joe Cool’s of the world don’t come around that often, so the fact that two came last season one should not expect Stafford or Sanchez to provide us with an encore.
*CAN THE PATS GO 16-0…again? By the looks of their offense one would answer YES to this question without a thought. But they’d be wrong. The Pats offensive attack will overwhelm teams through the regular season but New England’s defense is young in the secondary and prone to make big mistakes. There will be a few growing pains for the Pats “D” but their offense will help pick up the slack. I can see the Patriots winning 14 games but 16-0 seems to be farfetched.
*EAGLES GEICO POLICY…Reports out of Eagles/Vick camp is that commissioner Goodell will have a ruling on Vick’s reinstatement by Wednesday’s final cut time at 6:00 pm. It is believed that Michael Vick will be allowed to play by week 3 (meaning he’ll be suspended the first 2 weeks). If this is correct the news would be music to Andy Reid’s ears. Not only will they have clarity on Vick’s status but also it would allow the team to make the proper move with their fourth QB in A.J. Feely. Apparently, the Patriots are interested in traded for the veteran signal caller. As for Vick it will allow him a few more weeks to learn the offense and serve as McNabb’s insurance policy.
NFL Playoff Predictions: In the AFC I predicted the Steelers, Patriots, Chargers, Colts, Ravens and Bills to make the postseason. But who do I see making the AFC title game you ask…
AFC Championship
*Chargers OVER Patriots
As for the NFC my predictions included the Giants, Cardinals, Saints, Bears, Eagles and Vikings to make the postseason. But who will be standing tall late in January…
NFC Championship
*Bears OVER Eagles
III. SAY WHAT!!! (My Random Thoughts)
My World Series Prediction: Yankees over Cardinals
Usain Bolt holds the current World Record in the 100m & 200m. Does he sleep so fast that he only needs 4 hours instead of 8?
So let me get this straight Syracuse Football team needed a QB so bad that they offered a Duke PG the starting gig? I know Coach K teaches excellence buy come on!!
Wait a minute!?? Adam “Pacman” Jones got cut from the Winnipeg “whatevers’ of the CFL before he could even sign his deal. Is it safe to say his Game is officially Over???
I’m going to honestly have to revisit my predictions at the midway point because there are NO clear-cut favorites in the NFC!!!
TWEETS OF THE WEEK
@jemelehill The Detroit Lions just signed Chris Brown's bowtie! the bowtie will run the wildcat offense.
@alleniverson I'll be working out again today in ATL. Spoke w/a couple teams this week and I think we are getting real close to a deal. I hope so!
@DwightHoward Man this is crazy. I'm really in Africa! God is good.
