    Just a Thought...

When is Enough...Enough? Often times one may find themselves asking when enough is enough. When it comes to sports, fans pose this question all the time. When Brett Favre took us through a summer of flip flopping between playing and retirement I found myself asking this very question? Recently two NFL premier stars (Chad Johnson & Shawne Merrimen) were both advised to get surgical procedures that would end their seasons. Both have ligament tears but both said no. So I asked (in regards to being injured) when is enough, enough? Still confused I looked at another sports figure, Alex Rodriguez. The most talented (and highest paid) player in baseball. Fresh off an MVP season (and inking a new 10-year $275M contract) A-Rod has struggled to lift the Yankees to prominence. As a result, the fans in the Bronx boo him for having a bad game (or 10) but keep in mind he's fresh off a MVP season. He continues to hit 30 homers a year and manages to suit regardless of paparazzi attacks, Madonna rumors and the ensuing divorce. So, for the Superstar athlete when is enough enough? In the same city, different sport, the New York Giants are the defending champs in the NFL. As the season approached their best defensive player (Osi Umenyiora) suffered a season ending injury and the Giants brass (and fans) turned to recently retired Michael Strahan with hopes of convincing him to come out of retirement. To the Giants front office, success was in the past and therefore enough was not enough....Unless your name is Michael Strahan. You see, although the team was set to offer Strahan $6-$8M to return to the field, in his mind and heart enough was enough. Not because he was too old, banged up, tired or too rich but because he finally found happiness. At age 36, Strahan ended his career on top with a Super Bowl win over the then undefeated New England Patriots. So in life and in sports enough will be enough when happiness is all you need!

    I. NFL Divisional Breakdowns (AFC South) ... (2007 record)

    1. COLTS Prediction: 12-4 (2007: 13-3): In a game of word association one that comes to mind when the team name Colts is utter is another C-word. Consistency. For the past five seasons Indy has won at least 12 games a year. A feat that has been assumed every year is won that their division foe in the Texans has never done in their franchise history. But then an I-word comes into play this season, injuries. Their player/coach in Peyton Manning has battled an infection in his knee after having surgery on his bursa sac. This week has been the first time he's practiced since OTAs and Minicamps. Due to their consistent winning ways and his mastering of the offense one would have no worries about the Colts chances of making this the sixth season with 12 wins or more. Until today. News came out that Center Jeff Saturday will likely miss six weeks due to ligament damage in his right knee. Saturday is the key to their O-Lines protection of Manning on Sundays. Despite all of the injuries and pre-season inconsistencies with Peyton under center and Dungy patrolling the sidelines fans and opposition alike should familiarize themselves with the W-word. Wins.
    2. JAGUARS (2007: 11-5): After viewing the play (or lack thereof) of the Jags' during the pre-season only once conclusion could be drawn, they seem to have taken one step in the wrong direction. The Jags seem to have trouble moving the ball and a lot of it may have to do with the fact that they've already loss WR Joey Porter (FA signing from Raiders) and Maurice Jones-Drew to injury. Then again David Garrard has a year of film to dissect so the Jags will no longer be able to sneak up on anyone. This team will be viewed as a hard nosed, smash mouth football team so everyone will be bringing their lumber through Central Florida. The Jags are use to chasing the likes of Indy, defeating the Steelers in the playoffs and intimidating the Patriots but now the tables have turned. Three of the Jags' first four games are against divisional opponents, if they don't come out swinging it may be too late to make a push at seasons end.  Prediction: 10-6
    3. TEXANS (2007: 8-8): The best thing about a young team like the Texans is the fact that they have a solid foundation on the defensive side of the ball. Mario Williams made a believer out of many last season with 13 sacks. Super Mario proved that Houston did not have a problem in drafting him ahead of Saints RB Reggie Bush. But the question is can he maintain that momentum? Regardless the Texans will enter their second season with a healthy Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson. A tandem who'll keep Defensive Coordinators up in the wee hours of the morning preparing to contain them. The only question mark on this team is at the running back position. They seem to have a "by committee" approach but a team must be settled in its backfield to maintain the flow of offense. The Texans are going to surprise some people but weeks 3-5 are all against divisional opponents (two on the road) if they won't to prove their worth in the AFC South we'll know their value by week 6. Till they prove otherwise I see them on the outside looking in.    Prediction: 9-7
    4. TITANS (2007: 10-6): There's only one thing that I like about the Titans and his name is Chris Johnson. A rookie RB who runs faster than my car! Okay not quite but he did run the fastest 40 at the combine and his speed has translated to the field. As for Vince, I'm no fan of his play and he has yet to be surrounded with a group of receivers to prove me otherwise. The defense will be solid as usual but if your offense can't score points it will be tough to win games in the L. Last year the Tennessee managed to clinch a wild card spot (because the Colts sat all their starters the last game of the season) this year fans in Nashville will just be Remembering those Titans.         Prediction: 8-8
