    Super Bowl Thoughts

Sunday, February 3, 2008, 11:10 PM EST [super bowl]

Man, I thought Championship Sunday was good. Forget it, today was better!

    • Congratulations to the Giants! They played an amazing game, and proved that their play over the last 6 weeks was no fluke. Their defense is playing better now than any other team has played all year long, and Eli Manning stepped up every time he needed to. For the second straight game, the Giants completely outplayed their opponent and deserved to win.
    • I can honestly say that I'm not that surprised the Giants won. While they were a huge underdog from a points perspective, they were a team that matched up very well against the Patriots. I think if you asked the Patriots off the record, of all the teams from the NFC that they could have played in the Super Bowl, the Giants were the team they wanted to face the least. On paper, the Giants had all the ingredients to complete the upset, and just as they gained momentum as the season and playoffs went along, the Patriots lost it.
    • With that said, I'd like to clear something up. This was nowhere near the largest upset in Super Bowl history. Frankly, it wasn't even the biggest upset of the last decade; the Patriots beating the Rams was much bigger than this.
    • I would not want to be a bookie in Vegas tonight. Seriously, has there been an easier bet in recent memory than taking the Giants with the points???
    • Isn't it ironic that the score of every Bill Belichick-led Super Bowl has been decided by three points? 20-17 over the Rams. 32-29 over the Panthers. 24-21 over the Eagles. 17-14 loss to the Giants. Again, how do you not take the Giants with the points???
    • How awesome was it to see Peyton Manning cheering on his brother? I know I said two weeks ago that Eli should tell Peyton to stay home, but obviously he didn't listen to me, and it was a good thing. Seeing Peyton cheer on that final drive and touchdown pass to Plaxico Burress, he looked as pumped up as if he had just thrown it himself. Gotta love that.
    • Staying with family, I have to add a personal note here. I had the chance to watch the game with mine, and can honestly say it doesn't get much better than that. When Manning knelt for the final play of the game, my father, brother and I shared a hug that I will remember for the rest of my life. We have now watched three of the four Giants Super Bowls together, and in those games the Giants are 3-0.
    • What were Tom Brady and Bill Belichick thinking? Why did Brady cut his hair, and why did Belichick wear a different sweatshirt??? Having been in sports all of their lives, they have to know about superstitions. They could not have possibly been that confident to test fate... or could they?
    • I have compared the Patriots and Tom Brady of this decade to the Yankees and Derek Jeter of the 90s in the past, and the similarities continue at an eerie rate. Think about it: Brady won the first three Super Bowls he played in, and then lost for the first time on a last minute drive. Derek Jeter won the first four World Series he played in, and then lost for the first time to the Arizona Diamondbacks in the bottom of the ninth inning. Plus, both came in to their first championships as the underdogs, and by the time they lost for the first time, they were the hated "evil empires."
    • Tom Brady is one of the classiest and smoothest guys in the NFL, but one thing puzzles me about him. I can't say this for certain, but it appeared as if Tom Brady left the field without shaking Eli Manning's hand. If that's the case, it would be the second year in a row that Brady has stiffed a Manning after a loss. Last year, Peyton was walking around looking to shake Brady's hand after the Colts finally took down the Patriots in the playoffs, but Brady was nowhere to be found. Weird behavior for such a good person.
    • I realize at this point that everyone will say the Patriots undefeated regular season will go for naught, but I disagree. Despite the fact that New England lost the Super Bowl, people will forever remember that they went undefeated during the regular season. Unfortunately for them, they will also remember that the Patriots lost the Super Bowl and the New York Giants won it.
