I will get to the comments in a little bit, but first I wanted to give some quick thoughts on the Patriots-Giants game.
Number one, congratulations to the New England Patriots for completing the first perfect regular season in 35 years. That's a tremendous accomplishment, and they deserve all the accolades they will receive.
Secondly, kudos to the New York Giants for putting forth such a tremendous effort. True, they had nothing to lose as far as standings in the playoffs, but they certainly did when it came to the health of their players, and Tom Coughlin still played his starters all 60 minutes. While many people can question his decision, I for one applaud it. This game should have been a big and important one, and because of Coughlin's decision and his player's respect for the sport, it was exactly that. Frankly, it was one of the top two games of this season.
Number three, I think Wes Welker is quickly becoming one of my favorite players in the NFL. He does everything a team could possibly ask for, and he's such a smart player, it's hard not to like him. While Randy Moss gets much of the attention and rightfully so, Welker is a HUGE reason why this team was able to finish the season undefeated.
OK, so before I get to the comments, I would like to say one
thing, I am not a Patriots fan. As a matter of fact, I grew up a Giants fan,
and still am one; however I was rooting for history, and was really hoping for
a good game which is exactly what we got. With that said, now to the comments:
DesertHawker and
Seanspaul: The two of you share the same thoughts as many people in that
nothing the Patriots do matters because of Spygate. Well, to that I have the
same reaction I did to those who were wondering why more Yankees were named in the
Mitchell Report than the Red Sox: wake up and smell the coffee. The Patriots
certainly were not the only team doing what they did, they were just the ones
who got caught because they were so arrogant to believe the league would not
call them on it. Does this mean I agree with what they did? Absolutely not! But
the fact that they have not taped teams from the sidelines since, and have
reeled of 16 straight wins, well that tells me they're pretty legitimate. So
stop making this a jealousy issue, and instead be the real sports fans that you
know you are.
Olderthaniwanttobe:
You bring up some very valid points regarding the risk of injury, and obviously
it's a point that can, and probably will, be argued for eternity, however as I
stated above, I applaud the coaches for treating this like a playoff game.
Sure, my opinion could have changed if anyone sustained a major injury and was
forced to miss the playoffs (and that may still happen with Sean O'Hara or
Kawika Mitchell, not sure of the extent of their injuries), but I am also one
who firmly believes that when you start thinking about getting injured and play
tentatively, that's when bad things happen. Neither team did that, and we're
all better off for it.
Thanks again to all of you for your comments, I really appreciate them. Enjoy the games on Sunday, and have a Happy New Year!
