    Thoughts on Championship Sunday

Monday, January 21, 2008, 01:14 AM EST [New York Giants and New Englan]

Championship Sunday has come and gone, and I'm still sitting here thinking how great of a day it was. The Patriots-Chargers game turned out to be much closer than many anticipated, and quite honestly, the Chargers outplayed the Pats for much of the game. Unfortunately for San Diego, they never could put the ball in the end zone, and in turn, put New England away. Instead the Patriots bend-but-don't-break defense prevailed once again, and overcame Tom Brady's three interceptions. It's pretty amazing to think that even when Brady throws three picks, the Pats are able to win.

As for the Giants, well they certainly deserved to win the game. They outplayed the Packers in all facets of the game, and their defense was simply awesome. Take away the 90-yard touchdown reception to Donald Driver, and the defense held Green Bay to 174 total yards! Brett Favre, as great as a season as he had, never stood a chance today with the Giants taking away the running game of Ryan Grant. The balance that the Packers displayed last week was non-existent Sunday. Truth be told, Green Bay was lucky to have even been in the game, let alone have the ball to open overtime.

Now looking ahead to Arizona, this is going to be a very interesting Super Bowl. Having just seen these two teams play each other a month ago, we know what can happen when they face each other. But when analyzing the two teams quickly, it seems as if the Giants might have the edge. I know, you're probably thinking I'm crazy, but if you look at the Giants defense vs. the Patriots offense, well, they match up as well as just about anyone, and the Giants have the type of offense that can give the Patriots defense some problems. They have the power running back in Brandon Jacobs plus a counter back in Ahmad Bradshaw, big receivers in Plaxico Burress and Amani Toomer, a good receiving tight end in Kevin Boss, and a quarterback who is playing with tremendous confidence.

With all that said, they still have to play the PATRIOTS. And when you give Bill Belichick two weeks to prepare for a team, he's pretty much unbeatable. Combine that with the fact that the Patriots have now gotten over the hurdle of getting to the Super Bowl, I believe they'll be able to play with the relaxed attitude they did for the first 10-11 weeks of the season, and as we saw, that was frighteningly good.

Whatever the case may be, the Super Bowl should be a lot of fun.

    Quick Hits:

    • Why wasn't Tom Coughlin wearing any sort of protection on his face? It looked like he got frost bite, and as if he aged 10 years from the start of the game until the end (and no, it wasn't because Lawrence Tynes missed those two field goals in regulation).
    • What's with players wearing short sleeves when it's so cold outside? Do they really feel as if they're intimidating the other players? Frankly, if I were on the opposite side of one of them, I wouldn't be scared or intimidated. Instead I'd laugh and say, "wow, you're a moron, it's freezing out here!"
    • Speaking of crazy people, what was up with those three girls wearing bikini tops? Don't get me wrong, they were very attractive, but seriously, what's wrong with you??!?!? I love your allegiance to the team, but there's a line for everything and the temperature on Sunday was where you should draw it. Troy Aikman had a great line when he said, "that makes me feel like a sissy."
    • I have a new found respect for Eli Manning, and not because of the way he has played the last three weeks. Rather, it's for making his fianc
