O'Connor is just plain WRONG about Vince Young and NFL GMs

Thursday, March 30, 2006, 01:06 PM EST [Vince Young]

A response to Forget test trivialities, just watch Vince's film:

Mr. O'Connor's article is just silly.  True, he makes some interesting points about a culture of fear that might well exist among NFL GMs, but to insist that these selfsame GMs will pass on drafting Vince Young because of his Wonderlic score alone is a willful (and an idiotic) perversion of reason.

Yes: front-office executives are paid to use their eyes and their brains when they make crucial draft decisions.  No: they are NOT paid to rely on their "guts" or their "hearts" when doing same...which is precisely why "watching Vince's film" has been so crucial for scouts who are trying to assess his aptitude for the pro game.  Instead of allowing themselves to be swept away like the rest of us by a handful of admittedly spectacular performances, they have put themselves in front of projectors and taken stock of Vince's effort(s) over the WHOLE of his career.  They have analyzed every bad read and every errant throw just as carefully as they've analyzed every highlight-reel play.  They have wondered whether Vince's running instincts might hurt him--rather than help him--when exercised within a league where the "pass rushers are faster than the safeties."  They have asked themselves how Vince will adapt out of Texas' simplistic Zone-Read scheme, and adjust to the sophistication of NFL offenses whose successes are predicated on a timely and judicious delivery of the football.

No matter what the future holds for Vince as an NFL player (or, while we're at it, for Matt Leinart or for Jay Cutler), whichever GMs are faced with the task of drafting a quarterback in 2006 will inevitably be venerated or vilified, in keeping with the outcome of their choices.  With so much riding on these decisions, you can be sure they won't be based on any single factor, Wonderlic or otherwise.
