Looks like going to bed at a reasonable time made me miss a great Red Sox-Rays finish. I'm telling you - the Rays are not going away, even if my man B.J. Upton has been dropped to seventh in the order because he can't hit anymore. Who's off: Nobody First pitch: The Cards and Mets get NL action underway at 12:10 p.m. ET at injury-plagued CitiField, while the AL starts up with a pair of 7:05 games. Here's the full schedule. Pitcher to start: Thanks for nothing (except those eight strikeouts), Luke Hochevar. We're 64-68. Tonight, we'll go with our pal John Lannan (7.3 percent owned) against the Marlins, Frisbee-throwing Chad Gaudin (6.1 percent owned) against the Braves, and Princeton-educated Ross Ohlendorf (5.5 percent owned) against the D'backs. Pitcher to start: Not this time, John Lannan. We're 50-52. Tonight, we'll take Nick Blackburn (40.8 percent owned), who pitches well every time out, and Seattle's Brandon Morrow (13.9 percent owned), who is slowly but surely making progress as a starter. I thought about leaving Morrow out, but life's no fun if you don't take a death-defying risk once in awhile. ...

The Blue Jays have released former closer B.J. Ryan with approximately $15 million left on his contract. During Ryan's struggles, I've always viewed Scott Downs as the Jays' closer until Ryan got straightened out, since most teams will try to find a big role for a guy making that much money. With Ryan gone, Downs is clearly the man, and he should be owned in every single FOXSports.com league, instead of in the current 30 percent. Since the start of the 2007 season, Downs has a 1.98 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP in 156 innings, and has allowed just seven home runs. He's whiffed more than eight batters per nine innings over that span, and induced about twice as many ground balls as fly balls. Next spring, he's very likely to be ranked among the top 10 fantasy closers. If you can still get Downs, do ... |
