Folks - the morning blog schedule is changing starting next week. Until the start of the NFL season, I'll write about baseball on Monday and Friday mornings, and football on the other days (baseball will move to a Monday/Wednesday schedule next month). The Blue Jays have released former closer B.J. Ryan with approximately $15 million left on his contract. During Ryan's struggles, I've always viewed Scott Downs as the Jays' closer until Ryan got straightened out, since most teams will try to find a big role for a guy making that much money. With Ryan gone, Downs is clearly the man, and he should be owned in every single FOXSports.com league, instead of in the current 30 percent. Since the start of the 2007 season, Downs has a 1.98 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP in 156 innings, and has allowed just seven home runs. He's whiffed more than eight batters per nine innings over that span, and induced about twice as many ground balls as fly balls. Next spring, he's very likely to be ranked among the top 10 fantasy closers. If you can still get Downs, do ... |
