Fantasy Football Morning Update: Benson unlikely to play

Friday, November 20, 2009, 07:51 AM EST [Fantasy]

Wow - nice job by Ricky Williams last night. His fantasy owners are going to make out like bandits on the Ronnie Brown injury.

Here's where to get your last-minute lineup advice on Sunday:

    • Listen to FOX Fantasy Freaks Mike Harmon, Nate Lundy and Peter Burns from 10 a.m. until noon ET on XM 142 or foxsportsradio.com. You can also send them questions beforehand on Twitter by following them at @FantasyFreaks.
    • Chat with Roger Rotter from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Send him your questions anytime.
    • E-mail me questions at jhalpin37@gmail.com, or tweet me @jhalpin37.

    On to the news:

    • Cedric Benson probably won't play for the Bengals due to his hip injury, and I'm sure that this week's opponent (the Raiders) has something to do with that decision. After a solid performance last week, Bernard Scott is the likely lead back, but Larry Johnson is expected to be activated as well, and Brian Leonard could get a few extra looks. The only person I'd think about starting in fantasy is Scott.
    • Saints RB Reggie Bush is iffy for Sunday's game due to a knee injury. This could be a blessing in disguise if you wanted to start Bush, because for all the production he's offered lately, he's averaged less than seven touches a game over his last five. You knew that already if you already read my Pulitzer Prize-winning running back committees article this week.
    • The Redskins have ruled out RB Clinton Portis for this week's game. Ladell Betts is a must-start for fantasy owners.
    • The Broncos are staying mum about Kyle Orton's status for Sunday. You're not really dependent on Orton, are you?
    • Packers TE Jermichael Finley isn't on the injury report, so he should play after missing three games with a knee injury. In case you forgot, Finley was starting to produce before getting hurt, with 11 receptions for 182 yards and a score in Weeks 4 and 6. I'm a fan.
    • Jerious Norwood returned to practice Thursday for the Falcons, but there's still no new information about Michael Turner. Bench Turner if you haven't already.
    • Ravens TE Todd Heap missed another practice due to a chest injury. Make sure he's playing before putting him in your starting lineup.
    • Chris Jennings could start to get more carries for the Browns. Depending on the depth of your league, he could be worth a pickup. They don't like Jerome Harrison because he can't block, and Jamal Lewis is basically burning his bridges now that he's planning to retire. I wouldn't rate Jennings as high as guys like Forsett, Snelling, etc., right now, but let's see what happens this week.
    • Two head coaches were quoted as calling Bills QB Ryan Fitzpatrick "very bright" and "cerebral" in this article. They didn't use the term "fantasy stud" as far as I can tell.
    • "He's a small white guy who can catch." So says Chiefs WR Chris Chambers about teammate Lance Long, who's going to keep getting chances. I own Long in two PPR leagues, because who doesn't like small white guys who can catch? Except Keyshawn Johnson, anyway.
    • If anyone has any insight as to how the Raiders will use their running backs this week, can you please let me know? I'm stumped. Thanks.

See you back here on Monday.

Fantasy Football Morning Update: Portis unlikely to play

Thursday, November 19, 2009, 07:32 AM EST [Fantasy]

Continuing with running back carnage week, Wednesday brought two big news items:

    1. Miami's Ronnie Brown is done for the year with a fracture in his right foot. John Juhasz offers a take on the fantasy fallout, and the Miami Herald advises that Lex Hilliard "is expected to see an increased workload as Williams' backup in the Dolphins' base offense." The 240-pound Hilliard has zero carries this season, and you'd probably have to be in a pretty deep league to pick him up. Here's a Palm Beach Post article from August about Hilliard, in which head coach Tony Sparano called him "a big back that runs big." Short yardage, anyone?

    2. Brian Westbrook was tested by some concussion specialists, who "expect a full recovery" and will repeat the testing sometime in the next 2-3 weeks. So, Westbrook could be back this season, but there's really no way to know for sure, and I'd probably cut bait unless my free-agent options were non-existent. Obviously, LeSean McCoy starts, with Leonard Weaver probably serving as McCoy's handcuff. I don't know if Weaver is "a big back that runs big," but he is 250 pounds.

On to the rest of the news:

    • Redskins head coach Jim Zorn called RB Clinton Portis "very doubtful" for Sunday's game due to post-concussion symptoms. Portis apparently experienced more blurriness after a Wednesday workout, and didn't practice. Try to make your fantasy owners happy again this week, Ladell Betts.
    • Cedric Benson didn't practice Wednesday, and his status for this week is uncertain. According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, if Benson plays, Larry Johnson will be inactive. If Benson can't go, Johnson would likely be "part of a running back by committee approach with Bernard Scott and Brian Leonard getting the majority of the carries." I'd stay away from this fantasy crapshoot unless I was desperate.
    • This article calls Falcons RB Jerious Norwood a "longshot" to play this week, which probably cements Jason Snelling as the man in place of the injured Michael Turner. Turner reportedly hasn't ruled himself out for this week, but I think he and the Falcons are blowing smoke.
    • Patriots RB Sammy Morris was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice, but Providence Journal beat reporter Shalise Manza Young tweeted "I would say yes" when asked if Morris is expected to play. Laurence Maroney, you really shouldn't have fumbled on the goal line the other night.
    • Broncos QB Kyle Orton didn't practice Wednesday due to his sprained ankle. I'm starting to get the itch to pick up the underachieving Chargers' defense since they might face Chris Simms.
    • Seahawks RB Julius Jones is out this week due to a bruised lung. Justin Forsett has a good chance to take the job, but has a tough matchup in Minnesota in his first game as a starter.
    • Bruce Gradkowski is the Raiders' new starting QB, with JaMarcus Russell (a.k.a. The Black Ryan Leaf) headed to the bench. You're not really thinking about picking him up, are you?
    • Billy Cundiff is the Ravens' new kicker, replacing the newly unemployed Steve Hauschka. Too bad the Ravens offense hasn't been good enough to make that note interesting. Ravens TE Todd Heap didn't practice Wednesday due to a chest injury that kept him out of part of the game against the Browns Monday night. Stay tuned.
    • Ryan Fitzpatrick is back at QB for the Bills, replacing Trent Edwards. Zzz ...
    • Looking for a deep sleeper at wide receiver? Check out this article about Bears WR Devin Aromashodu. Jay Cutler sounds excited about throwing to Aromashodu, and if that's the case, so should any cornerback covering him.
    • Bucs WR Antonio Bryant actually might play this week? Wow.
    • Here's my latest column and video at FOXNews.com. Check 'em out when you get a chance.
    • Underachieving fantasy TE Anthony Fasano (hip) won't play tonight when the Dolphins visit the Panthers. Remember, that's TONIGHT, so don't forget to set your lineups.

    See you back here tomorrow.

Fantasy Football Morning Update: Atlanta's Turner-less plans

Tuesday, November 17, 2009, 08:00 AM EST [Fantasy]

Larry Johnson is apparently on the verge of signing with the Bengals, which is a big bummer for fantasy owners since he'll have less opportunity there than he would have elsewhere as long as Cedric Benson is healthy (his hip injury isn't supposed to be too serious). Jay Glazer reports that Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis views Johnson as a fourth-string running back.

The Bengals host Johnson's former team, the Chiefs, in Week 16, and the always classy Johnson is already talking trash. Here's what he reportedly posted on his Facebook page last night: "Gonna gallop all over the Chiefs. Cleat prints on the chests. Mud in the face masks." Football is more fun when backups taunt their opponents, isn't it?

    On to the news:

    • The Falcons probably won't announce Michael Turner's prognosis until Wednesday at the earliest, but look for him to miss at least a few games. Jason Snelling will be a hot fantasy free agent name this week, but check out this line from the Atlanta Journal Constitution: "If Turner is unable to go against the Giants ... Snelling and (Jerious) Norwood would split his carries." I know that "split" doesn't necessarily mean 50-50, but with Norwood probably returning from a hip injury, he should be on your radar. Remember that he, and not Snelling, was Turner's backup/change-of-pace replacement both last season and early this season. Snelling's a bigger back, but there's no reason why Norwood can't have as much fantasy value. Last year, Norwood averaged 52 yards from scrimmage per game, and scored six times.
    • Dolphins RB Ronnie Brown was seen on crutches in the locker room on Monday, and all reports still suggest that he's unlikely to play Thursday night against the Panthers. Plan accordingly.
    • Once again, that's a Thursday night kickoff for Dolphins-Panthers. Set your lineups on time unless you want to be that owner getting laughed at by the rest of the league.
    • The Seahawks seem to think that RB Julius Jones will recover quickly from the chest/lung injury that caused him to spend Sunday night in an Arizona hospital, but he's not expected to play this week. Justin Forsett is going to get a lot of work against the Vikings.
    • At least one Philly columnist thinks Eagles RB Brian Westbrook should retire after his latest concussion. I don't know if that's correct or not, but I just wanted to let you know what people are thinking in case you're looking at your roster and saying, "Maybe I'll get Westbrook back for Week 12." You won't.
    • Cleveland's Josh Cribbs apparently suffered a concussion on the final play of Monday's loss to the Ravens. No word yet on his prognosis.
    • Kyle Orton's status for Week 11 is up in the air, and will probably stay that way for a few more days. Who's ready to pick up Chris Simms? Anyone? Me neither.
    • Thanks partly to the hysteria surrounding Bill Belichick's fourth-down call Sunday night, nobody has said or asked anything about Sammy Morris' status for Week 11. We'll know more after Wednesday's practice, but if I owned Laurence Maroney, I'd be scared.
    • The Redskins don't know if Clinton Portis will play Sunday, but we knew as soon as Sunday's game ended that there'd be a running back controversy in D.C. Joe Theismann wants Ladell Betts to play, and you can post your opinion on the busy Washington Post message board. At least they're not talking about firing Jim Zorn this week.
    • Steelers safety Troy Polamalu is expected to miss at least one game with a knee injury. Now the Chiefs are going to light them up this week! OK, maybe not.
    • Am I allowed to boycott the Raider QB controversy between JaMarcus Russell and Bruce Gradkowski? No fantasy owners care, right?
    • Colts RB Joseph Addai might have a broken finger, and it's unclear if he'll miss any time. We should know more on Wednesday.
    • Packers WR Greg Jennings could be limited in practice this week due to a knee injury. It doesn't sound like it will affect his status for Sunday, but stay tuned.
    • Marion Barber's fractured thumb apparently caused some issues with his ability to help in pass protection on Sunday, and that may have contributed to his paltry total of five carries. I'm not sure if we'll be able to predict this in the future, but let's see how many times he runs this week.
    • Wait, the Bills have a QB controversy, too? Will either Trent Edwards or Ryan Fitzpatrick have any effect on Marshawn Lynch finally cracking 70 yards rushing in a game? If not, then I don't care.

See you back here Thursday morning.

Fantasy Football Morning Update: Bad day for backs

Monday, November 16, 2009, 07:51 AM EST [Fantasy]

Man, that Pats-Colts game lived up to the hype, didn't it? Fourth-and-two on your own 28, huh? I probably wouldn't have gone for it, but I won't kill Bill Belichick over that one. Here's a statistical argument supporting Belichick's decision (thanks to @pudge44 on Twitter for the link).

    On to the news:

    • There were a bunch of running back injuries yesterday, but let's start with the Eagles' Brian Westbrook, who suffered another concussion. Some Philly media are wondering if Westbrook might be done for the season - or longer - and you have to think the team will be very cautious with him. You should plan to be without Westbrook for the rest of the fantasy season. LeSean McCoy, welcome to every-week fantasy starterhood.
    • We'll find out more today about Michael Turner's ankle injury, but I would make backup plans for Week 11 and beyond if I owned him. This Atlanta Journal Constitution article says that the key will be if Turner has a high ankle sprain, which is worse than a low ankle sprain, but this one states that Turner indeed has a high ankle sprain. If Turner's outlook is bleak, at least for the short term, the whole world will try to pick up Jason Snelling, and I will, too. But keep an eye on Jerious Norwood's status as well. When he's healthy, he can steal some carries from Snelling. Not a ton, but some.
    • Dolphins RB Ronnie Brown sprained an ankle on Sunday, and with a Thursday night game on tap against the Panthers this week, he might not have time to recover. I was trying to make a trade in one of my leagues with a team that owns Brown and Turner. I wonder if those co-owners are banging their heads against their desks this morning.
    • Seahawks RB Julius Jones left Sunday's game with a broken rib, and there were reports last night that he had bleeding in his lung as well. Enter backup Justin Forsett, who ran for 123 yards in place of Jones. Some people think Forsett is a change-of-pace type, but he's talented. Pick him up immediately, even though the Seahawks visit Minnesota this week.
    • Bengals RB Cedric Benson left Sunday's game with a hip injury, but hopes to be ready for Week 11, which makes him seem downright healthy compared to the other backs we've listed so far. Stay tuned.
    • Remember that Larry Johnson could be added to the list of possible replacements for the injured players above. He might sign with someone as soon as today. I hope he likes his new coach, wherever he goes.
    • Beanie Wells had a nice day yesterday, and might be emerging as a big-time back. Good thing I kept him on my bench in one league this week. $#@!
    • How about Maurice Jones-Drew taking a knee at the one-yard line in the fourth quarter, which helped his team win but hurt his fantasy owners. MJD does care about you more than other players, though. Here's his postgame quote: "We knew they were pretty much going to let us score. So the coach said to just take a knee. Sorry to my fantasy owners, I apologize."
    • Looks like Jamaal Charles has taken a big lead in the Chiefs' RB derby. Who was promoting Kolby Smith last week, anyway? Me? Oh.
    • The Broncos handed the ball to Knowshon Moreno 18 times, and to Correll Buckhalter twice. Why do I get the feeling it'll be an even split again in Week 11? Maybe because nobody in the NFL besides MJD cares about fantasy owners.
    • Speaking of the Broncos, QB Kyle Orton sprained an ankle, and his status for Week 11 (and beyond) is uncertain.
    • Despite Ladell Betts' big game, Redskins head coach Jim Zorn said that Clinton Portis will still be the starter when healthy. I think this situation has controversy written all over it. Hang on to Betts for awhile if you have him.
    • JaMarcus Russell got benched again by the Raiders, which makes sense. Russell to Darrius Heyward-Bey is sort of the polar opposite of Montana-to-Rice, isn't it?
    • Has everyone been paying attention to how well Reggie Bush has been playing lately, even with limited touches? Just making sure.
    • Thought: If your 2010 draft were held today, would Chris Johnson be your No. 1 pick? Check out yesterday's stat line before you answer.
    • Awwwww ....
    • Boy, are the folks in New York beating up on Jets coach Rex Ryan today. Here's an example.
    • I won't pretend I know how this will affect the Panthers' running game, but LT Jordan Gross is done for the season with a broken ankle.

Enjoy Ravens-Browns tonight, even though the Baltimore Sun already thinks it's a blowout. Let's see what the Mangenius has to say about that. See you back here tomorrow.

    Fantasy Football Morning Update: T.O. a no-go?

Friday, November 13, 2009, 07:49 AM EST [Fantasy]

Five interceptions, Jay Cutler? I'm really glad I recommended you in a column this week. When I wrote that you'd throw the ball a lot, I assumed that maybe a few of them might be headed in the general direction of your teammates. Damn you for causing millions of fantasy owners to have a disaster on their hands before the weekend has even started.

If you're looking for some Sunday morning help to repair the Cutler-caused damage, here are some options:

    • Listen to FOX Fantasy Freaks Mike Harmon, Nate Lundy and Peter Burns from 10 a.m. until noon ET on XM 142 or foxsportsradio.com. You can tweet them your questions @fantasyfreaks.
    • Chat with Roger Rotter from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. ET. Send your questions now if you like.
    • Send me an e-mail at jhalpin37@gmail.com, or tweet me @jhalpin37.

    On to the news:

    • Bills WR Terrell Owens missed another practice on Thursday due to a strained hip, and his status for Sunday might not be clear until close to kickoff. If you've been stupid brave enough to continue starting Owens despite his miserable season, this gives you the perfect reason to bench him.
    • Clinton Portis has been officially ruled out by the Redskins. Time for Ladell Betts to announce his fantasy presence with authority.
    • Brian Westbrook was back at practice for the Eagles yesterday. Is he going to play Sunday? I have no idea. Let's see what the news says Sunday morning.
    • The Jaguars' site reports that Maurice Jones-Drew was limited in Thursday's practice due to a knee injury, but at this point I don't think it's anything to worry about. It came out of nowhere, and the Jags don't sound concerned.
    • I think I'd bet the Steelers over the Bengals this week. Not because of any basic personnel advantages, but because Chad Ochocinco seems to be spending all his time playing the new Call of Duty video game. This tweet came at 5:45 a.m. ET today: "I'm getting online on call of duty, anybody want to play on 360, I don't have practice till 10:00am, cmon son my rank sucks, need an 85 rank."
    • Titans WR Justin Gage is expected to miss a few weeks with some fractured bones in his back; Kenny Britt will replace him in the starting lineup. If you missed it, Gage made a leaping catch last week, and crashed down on his side with plenty of force. It hurt just to watch it.
    • Don't forget your byes: The Giants and Texans are off this week. In the Giants' case, that's like a win, right?
    • Still no practice for Bucs WR Antonio Bryant. Don't count on him this week.
    • Willie Parker might get on the field every third series, huh? The way Rashard Mendenhall is running, I'll believe that when I see it.
    • Raiders WR Chaz Schilens will make his 2009 debut for the Raiders this week after missing a couple of months with a broken foot. Not that I'm getting excited about an Oakland receiver, but Schilens reportedly looked great in training camp. Keep an eye on him. Doesn't someone besides Zach Miller need to catch passes out there?
    • Packers TE Jermichael Finley thinks he might be able to go this week after missing two games with a knee injury. He hasn't practiced yet, so I wouldn't be too optimistic, but take a look at his status Sunday morning if you really need a tight end.
    • Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams was limited at Thursday's practice, but it's nothing to worry about.

See you back here on Monday.
