Yesterday reminded me why I hate the luck involved in fantasy football sometimes. Last week, I told quite a few people to pick up the Panthers' defense due to their matchup against QB Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Bills. I think I was on target, since the Bills were only able to muster 167 total yards for the game, but they scored 20 points because the Panthers gift-wrapped 17 of them with turnovers. Thanks, Jake Delhomme.
(P.S. If Delhomme loses his job this week, please don't do anything silly like pick up Matt Moore or A.J. Feeley. I live in Charlotte, so I'll have to watch them, but you don't need to go through that.)
On to the news:
- Jets RB Leon Washington is done for the season after breaking his leg on the first carry of yesterday's game against the Raiders. Enter rookie Shonn Greene, who carried 19 times for 144 yards and two touchdowns against the Raidefs. Greene is more of a traditional tailback than the versatile Washington, but he should get plenty of work as a second banana to Thomas Jones for the rest of the season. Greene is owned in just 32 percent of FOXSports.com leagues, and is a good bet to be atop everyone's free-agent pickup list this week.
- While sitting at the Panthers' game, I checked my Blackberry for scoring updates quite a bit since the game was so awful. At one point, I looked at 49ers-Texans, shook my head and said, "Alex Smith?" Yep, the former No. 1 overall pick relieved Shaun Hill at halftime, and threw for 205 yards and three touchdowns. Most Bay Area media speculation seems to be that head coach Mike Singletary will name Smith as the starter for Week 8, and if you're still trolling for a fantasy backup, he's probably worth a try. Don't expect yesterday's production too often, though.
- Speaking of the Niners, WR Michael Crabtree caught five passes for 56 yards in his NFL debut. Also, TE Vernon Davis cemented his status as an every-week fantasy starter with his three-TD performance. Can you believe we're talking about the 49ers like this?
- Andre Johnson owners can probably rest easy. The Texans' star WR left Sunday's game with a chest injury, but is expected to be ready for Week 8.
- I guess Miles Austin's Week 6 performance wasn't a fluke, huh? Wow.
- Packers TE Jermichael Finley left Sunday's game with a sprained knee, and he might miss Brett Favre's return to Lambeau this weekend. I wonder if Finley will let us know about his status via Twitter before the usual media relays it.
- Make it your business to check if Cardinals RB Beanie Wells is available in your league. He looked really good against the Giants last night, and got 14 carries to Tim Hightower's four.
- Remind me never to listen to Jerry Jones again. He said on his radio show last week that RB Tashard Choice was going to get more playing time. Choice didn't carry the ball against the Falcons, and had only one reception for 23 yards.
- The Bucs yanked QB Josh Johnson in favor of Josh Freeman in Sunday's loss to the Patriots, and the move could be permanent. The Bucs have a bye in Week 8, and that's not the only reason this change shouldn't excite you too much.
- Let's go with quarterback changes for 0, Alex. The Raiders benched JaMarcus Russell in favor of Bruce Gradkowski against the Jets, but Russell is expected to start this week against the Chargers. If you read the story at that link, it sounds like Russell is completely oblivious to how bad he is. If he keeps his job, I hope the Raiders are on Hard Knocks next season, or that Russell gets his own show called The Black Ryan Leaf. I didn't invent that comparison, but isn't it perfect?
- Is Matt Forte at the top of this season's fantasy bust list? I know the Bears got blown out early, but six carries for 24 yards is no way to earn your top-five status.
- Lord, I don't ask for much. Can you pleeeeeease let Pedro Martinez start Game 2 of the World Series at Yankee Stadium? If it happens, my candidates to throw out the first pitch are: 1) Don Zimmer, 2) Grady Little, and 3) Aaron Boone.
- Colts RB Donald Brown injured his shoulder in the second quarter of Sunday's game and did not return. Brown says it isn't serious, but we'll need to keep an eye on his status this week.
- Uh-oh. Chiefs RB Larry Johnson apparently trashed his head coach on Twitter, and his Twitter page seems to have been taken down. This actually could have fantasy implications, since the Chiefs have no reason to keep playing Johnson if he's being a pain in the a**. They're going to stink either way.
Enjoy the Eagles-Redskins barnburner tonight. I'll pick 32 in the "Number of times the cameras cut to Sherm Lewis in the press box" pool. See you back here tomorrow.
