Hey, let's play a game! This blog's always-vigilant language filter has flagged not one, not two, but three player names today as obscenities, and not one of them is Bills RB Mr. Marshawn. See if you can figure out who they are!
My friend John Juhasz offers fantasy analysis of the Braylon Edwards trade and the long awaited Michael Crabtree signing, so I won't rehash too many of the details, other than to say that A) I think the big fantasy winner of the trade is Browns WR Mohammed M****aquoi, and B) I really like JJ's analysis of the Crabtree situation. People have bashed this kid and written him off too quickly because they're mad that he turned down so much money for so long. When did that become the crime of the century?
Speaking of Mr. Juhasz, he'll host a live chat today at 3 p.m. right here on FOXSports.com. Send your questions now!
On to the news:
- With Steelers RB Willie Parker pessimistic about his chances to play this week, Rashard Mendenhall appears ready to make his second consecutive start ... against the Lions, who are giving up a pretty bad 5.2 yards per carry. Mendenhall is still available in 31 percent of FOXSports.com leagues, so pick him up, start him, etc.
- Eli Manning missed Wednesday's practice with his foot injury, and the Giants are saying that his status could be a gametime decision. I live in Charlotte, and I watched current Giants' backup David Carr play a few games for the Panthers in 2007. He may have been the worst quarterback I've ever seen play in the NFL. I still think he can beat the Raiders, though.
- Browns RB Jamal Lewis was limited in Wednesday's practice, but since the Cleveland media landscape was dominated by the Edwards news, nobody's really talking about his chances of playing Sunday. We'll check again tomorrow.
- Lions QB Matthew Stafford missed Wednesday's practice with a knee injury, and his status for Sunday is up in the air.
- Seahawks QB Matt H****elbeck practiced Wednesday, but was reportedly in "excruciating pain" due to his broken rib. I'm not sure if he'll play Sunday, but if he does look for a lot of wincing and screaming.
- The Denver Post reports that there's a "good chance" Broncos RB Correll Buckhalter won't play this week due to a sprained ankle. Expect Knowshon Moreno to get most of the carries, with LaMont Jordan filling in the blanks.
- Neither WR Roy Williams nor RB Felix Jones practiced Wednesday for the Cowboys. Williams says he'll play Sunday despite a rib injury, while Jones appears doubtful. Do you think anyone in the Cowboys locker room is hoping Williams stays on the bench?
- Reminder: Donovan McNabb and Brian Westbrook will play this week for the Eagles, while Frank Gore won't for the 49ers. Expect Gore to return in Week 7 (the Niners have a bye in Week 6).
- I think Brett Favre is going to be on the injury report all year, even though he'll keep playing. On a related note, if you're thinking about selling high on a 40-year-old fantasy QB who's averaging over 200 yards and two touchdowns per game, now would probably be a good time. Favre hasn't thrown fewer than 15 interceptions in a season since 1996, and he has ONE so far this year. I'm just saying ...
- Rams QB Marc Bulger will probably miss one more game with his shoulder injury, meaning that Air Boller is in line to face the Vikings this week.
- So, the Redskins just hired an offensive "consultant" who didn't even talk to the head coach before he started? And who was lured out of a retirement that included calling bingo games to help fix the NFL's most underachieving offense? This should be fun to watch.
- Even though RB Derrick Ward returned to practice Wednesday, the Bucs' offensive coordinator says he wants to make Cadillac Williams more of a "full-time guy." Let's see how this goes - my money is still on Cadillac getting hurt again.
- Don't look for Colts WR Anthony Gonzalez to return just yet.
- Bears WR Devin Hester missed Wednesday's practice with a neck injury, but he'll be ready to go in Week 6.
- Bengals RB Cedric Benson didn't practice Wednesday, but I haven't heard anything that makes me think he'll be unavailable to get crunched by the Ravens on Sunday.
- In Darren McFadden's absence, the Raiders plan to get both Justin Farg*s and Michael Bush some carries on Sunday. Rumor has it that the Giants will use six defensive linemen, five linebackers and no defensive backs, and see if JaMarcus Russell can hit any of his receivers in stride while nobody covers them. OK, even though I made that up, I think the Giants should try it.
- Don't forget your byes this week. The Bears, Packers, Saints and Chargers are off.
See you tomorrow.
