Our long national nightmare is over. After an excruciatingly long one-year absence, the New York Yankees clinched a postseason berth last night. I hope you didn't light any cars on fire during your local celebration.
Who's off: Nobody
First pitch: The Yanks and Angels get NL action underway at 3:35 p.m. ET, while the National League schedule begins with a pair of games at 7:05. Here's the full schedule.
Pitcher to start: And you thought I was crazy to pick David Purcey on Monday. His strong outing, followed by another decent effort from Jeff Niemann, have us at 93-90 for the season. The champagne to celebrate an over-.500 season isn't on ice yet, but it's definitely been purchased.
Tonight, we'll go with Rays' rookie Wade Davis (1.9 percent owned), who tossed a four-hit shutout in his last start. Davis takes the mound against the Mariners, who are 28th in the majors in runs scored, ahead of only thr Padres (by three runs) and Pirates (by six runs). That means they're behind 14 teams that are required to include pitchers in their lineups. It's amazing that they're 79-72.
On to the news:
- White Sox closer Bobby Jenks will miss the rest of the season after injuring a calf muscle last night. The logical options to save games the rest of the way are Octavio Dotel and Matt Thornton, and I suspect that Ozzie Guillen will choose Dotel only because he's closed before. With that said, the Sox haven't answered that question yet, so I'll keep an eye on the news. If you hear anything, let me know.
- In other White Sox news, Gavin Floyd is scheduled to start Sunday, but he's been bothered by a hip injury, and might get shut down for the season. Stay tuned.
- Braves C Brian McCann left Wednesday's game early due to a hand injury. The team's Web site reports that X-rays were negative, but McCann might get a day off today (the Braves are idle tomorrow).
- Here's a reminder that Astros SP Roy Oswalt has been shut down for the season.
- Lots of Rockies' news today. OF Carlos Gonzalez left Tuesday's game early due to a tight hamstring; it doesn't sound serious, and he's day-to-day. Huston Street is once again the team's closer, and Aaron Cook is scheduled to return to the mound Friday after missing a month with a shoulder injury. Cook will be on a pitch limit of about 60-70, according to MLB.com. I wouldn't pick him up if I were you.
- David Aardsma's back flared up after a cross-country flight, and that's why Mark Lowe saved the Mariners' win over the Rays last night. Don't worry about Aardsma - he should be fine.
- Jays 3B Edwin Encarnacion clubbed two homers last night, giving him five homers and nine RBI in his last eight games. It's about time.
- Look for Rangers OF Josh Hamilton to return to the lineup this weekend.
- The Giants' Web site reports that 2B Freddy Sanchez will miss at least a few more days with a knee injury. He could get shut down for the season if the Giants keep fading. Speedy Eugenio Velez played part of last night's game at second base, and is expected to start there today.
- Padres 3B Kevin Kouzmanoff looks like he'll be out through Thursday with some back issues.
- Twins OF Denard Span is expected to be back in the lineup tonight, according to the team's Web site. He got a day off after getting hit in the head with a pitch on Monday.
- Clayton Kershaw pitched two scoreless innings of relief last night in his return to the mound for the Dodgers. The Dodgers' site says to expect a start Sunday or Monday.
- Indians 1B Matt LaPorta left Tuesday's game with hip inflammation. He's day-to-day, according to the team's site.
- C Ramon Hernandez was back in the Reds' lineup last night for the first time since his July knee surgery, and he could be a decent fantasy play for the next week and a half. Also, the Reds activated OF Willy Taveras from the DL, but he stayed on the bench while rookie Drew Stubbs played.
- Hey, I've got three wins in a row in Hot Streak. Today, I'll take Albert Pujols to go deep against Astros' rookie Bud Norris. Make your selection now!
- Stop by FOXSports.com for a fantasy baseball chat with Gerrit Ritt today at 3 p.m. ET. If you can't make it then, send your questions now!
I'll be back here tomorrow with a football entry, and Monday with more baseball news. If you can't wait until then for more spot starter selections, follow me on Twitter.
You have a lot of good information on this page, keep up the good work.
