Mets 3B David Wright will return to action against the Rockies on Tuesday after missing a couple of weeks with a concussion. A Met is actually coming off the DL? I think this qualifies as one of the top 10 stories of the season.
Who's off: Red Sox, Indians, Phillies, Mets, Cardinals, Brewers, Giants, Rockies
First pitch: The Rays and Tigers get the AL day going at 1:05 p.m. ET, while the Pirates and Reds play the first game of their doubleheader at 1:10. Here's the full schedule.
Pitcher to start: It was a big weekend for our picks, with John Smoltz, Max Scherzer, Ian Snell and Ross Ohlendorf all meeting at least two of our four criteria for a fantasy quality start. We're up to 80-81, but not going to get cocky just yet.
Tonight, we'll go with Rangers' rookie lefty Derek Holland (6.9 percent owned) against the Jays.
On to the news:
- Jake Peavy left his minor-league rehab start on Saturday after 3 1/3 innings due to tightness in his pitching elbow. He'll reportedly be examined today by White Sox doctors, but he definitely won't pitch Thursday against the Cubs, which had been a possibility. If you own Peavy, he's stashed on your bench while you wait for him to return. I guess you'll just have to keep waiting.
- Here's the fallout from Friday's Scott Kazmir deal: Kazmir will make his first start for the Angels on Wednesday, bumping rookie Trevor Bell from the rotation. While Andy Sonnanstine will take Kazmir's rotation slot for the Rays starting Tuesday. Unless you're in an AL-only league, stay away from Sonnanstine. He was awful (6-7, 6.61 ERA) before getting sent to the minors. They couldn't promote Wade Davis, huh? Oh, well.
- In other Rays' news, 2B Akinori Iwamura returned from a lengthy DL stint over the weekend, and played on both Saturday and Sunday, with Ben Zobrist moving to the outfield. The Gabe Brothers, Kapler and Gross, are going to take a hit in playing time.
- D'backs closer Chad Qualls dislocated his kneecap on the final play of Sunday's game. He'll have an MRI today, but this doesn't sound good. Hard to say who the next closer in line would be - reader Chris Pangborn told me he picked up Juan Gutierrez.
- In other D'backs news, OF Chris Young is back from the minors, and C Chris Snyder might be done for the season with some back issues.
- Paul Byrd tossed six shutout innings yesterday in his first start for the Red Sox, which is pretty good for a guy who throws 47 mph and hasn't pitched for a year. He's slated to start again Friday, and even though I picked him up in an AL-only league, I'm not expecting much.
- In other Red Sox rotation news, Tim Wakefield's next start is completely up in the air, and Daisuke Matsuzaka was brutal in a rehab start over the weekend. This makes me happy.
- Cubs OF Alfonso Soriano will miss at least a few games this week after getting a cortisone shot in his knee, while C Geovany Soto is about to get more bench time in favor of backup Koyle Hill. Soto has to be the fantasy flop of the year, right?
- With Joe Crede back on the DL, Brendan Harris played third base all weekend for the Twins.
- The Padres' Web site reports that hulking rookie OF Kyle Blanks has been put on the DL with a foot injury. Your cheap fantasy HR plan just went out the window, but on the bright side, the Padres will save some money on their postgame buffets.
- Tim Hudson will make his first start of 2009 on Tuesday against the Marlins.
- Nice outing for Orioles' rookie Brian Matusz yesterday. If you're looking for a young fantasy starter for 2010, he could fit the bill.
- Rookie SP Carlos Carrasco - acquired in the Cliff Lee trade - will make his Indians' debut on Tuesday. DH Travis Hafner could miss "several days" with shoulder soreness, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
- Daniel McCutchen makes his first big-league start tonight for the Pirates. The 26-year-old had a 3.47 ERA in Triple A, but at his age he's more of an NL-only flier than future fantasy ace.
- Brandon Morrow left his Saturday minor-league start with arm stiffness, so if you've been waiting for him to rejoin the Mariners, you might be waiting a little longer.
- I'll go with the computer's pick today for Hot Streak - a Johnny Damon homer. Make your selection now!
I'll post football entries Tuesday through Thursday, and another baseball entry Friday. If you have any questions about minor-league callups that can't wait for the end of the week, e-mail me at jhalpin37@gmail.com. Or, stop by for my live chat on Wednesday at 3 p.m. ET. You can send questions now if you like.
See you tomorrow.
