Doesn't it kind of sum up the Mets' season to have yesterday's game end on an unassisted triple play? If you haven't seen the highlight yet, check it out.
Who's off: Yankees, Rangers, Marlins, Braves, Cardinals, Cubs, Astros, Reds, Pirates, Padres, Dodgers, D'backs
First pitch: In the NL, the Phillies look to turn a few more unassisted triple plays against the Mets starting at 1:10 p.m. ET, while today's AL action begins at 7:07 with Jays-Rays. Here's the full schedule.
Pitcher to start: On Friday, Randy Wells didn't qualify under our criteria despite not allowing an earned run in 6 2/3 innings. I thought about making an exception until Jorge De La Rosa somehow made the grade with a six-inning, six run outing on Saturday. David Price was good enough Sunday, giving us a 2-1 weekend, and raising our record to 75-78 on the season.
Seattle's Ian Snell (34.1 percent owned) is an inconsistent pitcher with horrendous control. He also had a solid outing last time out, and takes the mound tonight in his pitcher-friendly home park against the weak-hitting A's. He's worth a shot tonight.
And since I'll be doing football Tuesday through Thursday, with a return to baseball blogging on Friday, here are a few more spot-start selections:
- Tuesday: Ryan Rowland-Smith (1.8 percent owned) vs. A's
- Wednesday: Kenshin Kawakami (3.8 percent owned) vs. Nationals
- Thursday: Anibal Sanchez (1.2 percent owned) vs. Mets
On to the news:
- During another fine baseball weekend in the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry, Hideki Matsui hit four home runs, including another pair last night. In his last seven games, Godzilla has six homers and 15 RBI, and he's owned in just 48.1 percent of FOXSports.com leagues. He won't stay this hot, but if you need some late-season power, you could do worse.
- Didn't I tell you John Smoltz wasn't done yet? He tossed five shutout innings with nine strikeouts against the Padres yesterday, and before you say, "But it was only the Padres!", his next start is at home Friday against the Nats. There's a fantasy spot start if I've ever seen one. Also, I'm sure the Red Sox are going to be thrilled when they read this article about how easy it was for the Cardinals to detect a flaw in Smoltz's delivery about three seconds after they acquired him.
- The Blue Jays' Web site reports that Scott Downs will "probably" be activated today, but might not return to the closer's role right away.
- Reds' starter Aaron Harang is done for the season after having his appendix removed, and teammate Chris Dickerson is headed to the DL with a sprained ankle. On the bright side, the Reds did get 3B Scott Rolen back over the weekend.
- The Rangers will reportedly recall 1B Chris Davis before tomorrow's game against the Yankees. Davis hit around .200 with eight million strikeouts before being sent to the minors, but he seems to have straightened things out during his seven weeks away from the big club. Slumping Hank Blalock appears to be in the biggest danger of losing playing time.
- Rockies SP Aaron Cook will miss at least three weeks with a shoulder injury, while OF Carlos Gonzalez will miss at least a few days after cutting his hand with a steak knife. Aren't these guys rich enough to hire people to cut their food?
- Orioles OF Adam Jones left Sunday's game with back spasms, and while the injury doesn't sound serious, he could miss a few days.
- Tim Wakefield is expected to come off the DL to start Wednesday for the Red Sox. Wednesday was supposed to be Brad Penny's turn in the rotation, and Sox fans can only hope Penny and his 5.61 ERA have been traded to the Northern League or Japan or something. Who didn't see this coming?
- In other Red Sox news, Billy Wagner could join the team's bullpen as soon as tomorrow, whether Jonathan Papelbon likes it or not. If you need a non-closer in an AL-only league, you should absolutely take a shot at Wagner.
- Cubs OF Alfonso Soriano missed Sunday's game with a sore knee, but I haven't seen any report suggesting he'll miss additional time.
- The A's recalled 1B Daric Barton over the weekend, and the team's Web site reports that he'll probably share time with Tommy Everidge. Yippee.
- The Twins sent SP Anthony Swarzak to the minors, and will recall Armando Gabino to start Tuesday. Gabino, 25, had a 2.83 ERA at Triple A, and was recently moved to a starting role after many years as a reliever. My official analysis is "eh."
- My Hot Streak pick for today is for Ryan Howard to go deep off Mets rookie Bobby Parnell. Make your selection now!
See you tomorrow with plenty of football news.
Impeessive work.
