Cut me some slack if I'm a little incoherent today. I had a bad night's sleep, since my five-year-old daughter appears to have picked up a new hobby - sleepwalking! Can that be a one-time thing? %$#@!
Who's off: Nobody
First pitch: The Pirates and Astros play the first National League game at 2:05 p.m. ET, while the Orioles and Mariners get the AL slate underway at 4:40. Here's the full schedule.
Pitcher to start: I guess Jordan Zimmermann can't win 'em all. We're under .500 again at 49-50.
Tonight we'll double-dip, taking regular choice Max Scherzer (27 percent owned) against the Padres, and Hiroki Kuroda (22.8 percent owned) against the Mets' replacement team.
On to the news:
- Cubs SP Ryan Dempster is on the DL with a broken big toe, which he suffered jumping over the dugout railing to join a victory celebration on Sunday. Lou Piniella said he expects Dempster to miss 3-4 weeks. Kevin Hart (3.10 ERA, 1.13 WHIP at Triple A) will start today for the Cubbies.
- Twenty-four hours ago, reports indicated that Cardinals 3B Mark DeRosa would be back in the lineup last night. Now he's on the DL with a "partially torn tendon sheath" near his left wrist. The Cards are hoping for DeRosa to be activated soon after the All-Star break, but I'll believe it when I see it. Brian Barden and Joe Thurston will man the hot corner in DeRosa'a absence.
- Alfredo Aceves will start Thursday for the Yankees, taking Chien-Ming Wang's rotation slot. Aceves has been terrific in relief for the Yanks over the last two seasons, but the numbers say he's also a flyball pitcher, which should make him perfect for a ballpark that's allowing a ridiculous amount of home runs. He'll be on a limit of about 65 pitches Thursday.
- Blue Jays closer Scott Downs might be activated today, according to the team's Web site. I wouldn't recommend a fantasy roster move until we know for sure, but if I hear anything today, I'll tweet it.
- Braves 3B Chipper Jones missed Tuesday's game with a sore groin, and he might sit today as well. I know, you're shocked.
- Speaking of the Jays, rookie southpaw Marc Rzepczynski had a strong big-league debut last night. Rzepczynski had a 2.66 ERA between Double A and Triple A before being promoted, and has terrific strikeout rates. You can grab him in AL-only leagues if he sticks around, but let's not put him in Cooperstown just yet, and not only because they'd probably misspell the last name on his plaque. Here's a thorough scouting report on Rzepczynski from Bluebird Banter.
- And speaking again of the Jays, the team's Web site reports that SP Shaun Marcum - who had Tommy John surgery last year - could rejoin the team's rotation as soon as early August. I'd temper my expectations, since most pitchers don't set the world on fire immediately after coming back from that procedure.
- Erik Bedard had a strong return start last night before the Mariners' bullpen gave up a few hundred runs in relief.
- The M's also put DH Mike Sweeney on the DL with back spasms.
- The Rockies recalled Franklin Morales from the minors, but he'll pitch out of the bullpen for the time being.
- The Tigers' Web site reports that OF Clete Thomas will come back from Triple A and play tonight. Don Kelly goes down to make room for Thomas. Yes, we've gotten to today's second-tier news.
- The Reds think Johnny Cueto's recent slump might be partly due to a heavy winter workload, and they're monitoring his pitch count closely. I see big red warning lights here.
- Royals OF Jose Guillen left Tuesday's game with "tightness" in both legs, and he says the problem has been bothering him for awhile.
- The Pirates hope to get injured 2B Freddy Sanchez (back) back in the lineup on Friday
- The White Sox acquired setup man Tony Pena from the Diamondbacks.
- One more time - why is Clayton Kershaw owned in just 49.8 percent of FOXSports.com leagues? He mowed down the Mets last night, but I guess that's not too hard.
See you tomorrow.
