In case you missed it, Derek Jeter was called out at third base yesterday on a play where the third baseman clearly missed the tag. Jeter claims that the ump told him he was out simply because the ball beat him to the bag, and said, "I was told I was out because the ball beat me, and he didn't have to tag me. I was unaware they had changed the rules." Jeter sounds classy even when he's skewering someone, doesn't he?
Who's off: Nobody
First pitch: We've got a 7:05 p.m. ET start in each league. Here's the full schedule.
Pitcher to start: The champagne corks popped last night at Halpin Blog Central, as Randy Wells' strong start finally got our picks to .500 on the season (49-49). The sky's the limit from here, folks.
Tonight's pick is an easy one - I'm not getting off Jordan Zimmermann's bandwagon until it drives itself off a cliff. The Nats rookie is owned in just 4.3 percent of FOXSports.com leagues, and he's throwing on the road against Jason Hammel (4.1 percent owned) and the Rockies. Hammel wouldn't be a bad choice, either, but I'll stick with Zimmermann.
On to the news:
- Cardinals beat writer Joe Strauss from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that 3B Mark DeRosa should be available tonight after missing a few games with a wrist injury. I'd get DeRosa back in my lineup if I owned him. UPDATE: 1:31 p.m.: Strauss' Twitter feed reports that DeRosa is DL-bound.
- The Giants placed Randy Johnson on the DL with a strained rotator cuff, and manager Bruce Bochy said he hopes it's just a 2-3 week absence. I know, you're shocked that a 45-year-old pitcher got injured. Southpaw Jonathan Sanchez will take Johnson's spot in the rotation starting Friday.
- Twins SP Kevin Slowey got a second opinion on his injured wrist, and it still doesn't sound serious. He could start throwing in a couple of days.
- The Marlins' Web site reports that fantasy god Hanley Ramirez missed another game last night with a sore hip flexor. He didn't even pinch-hit during a ninth-inning rally, so I'm skeptical about his chances to play tonight.
- Orioles closer hopeful Chris Ray is on the DL with biceps tendinitis, but the team is optimistic that he won't be out for more than the required 15 days. I feel like Ray is one of those guys who's going to keep disappointing fantasy owners. Or, since I said that, he'll get 10 saves in August and September to make me look stupid.
- Red Sox 2B Dustin Pedroia missed last night's game due to something involving his pregnant wife, and his availability for tonight is uncertain. 1B Jeff Bailey - who was getting most of Mike Lowell's at bats - is on the DL with a sprained ankle. Aaron Bates was recalled to replace Bailey, and he's worth only a little in AL-only leagues.
- Speaking of the Red Sox, A's rookie Brett Anderson mowed them down last night, but the bigger pitching story might be that John Smoltz was hit hard again. Clay Buchholz should probably start packing his belongings in Pawtucket.
- A's SP Dallas Braden is on the bereavement list, and he'll miss his scheduled start tonight.
- Raul Ibanez's minor-league rehab game last night was uneventful, and he's still on target for a Thursday or Friday return to the Phillies.
- Jeff Francoeur was benched last night for the third straight game, and even though he might be back in the Braves' lineup tonight, he shouldn't be in yours unless your league has a "Swinging at Everything" category.
- The Tigers are going to skip rookie Rick Porcello's next start so that he won't pitch again until after the All-Star break. Nothing to worry about - Porcello's only 20, and you knew they were going to limit his innings when you drafted him.
- In other Tigers news, OF Carlos Guillen took batting practice yesterday, and still hopes to return before the end of the month.
- The Royals acquired utilityman Ryan Freel from the Cubs, and he could get more time in center field than you think.
- After being pushed back a few days, Vicente Padilla will start Wednesday for the Rangers. Pushing Padilla back another 88 days until the end of the season might have been a better idea.
- Scrappy Padres 2B David Eckstein is on the DL with a strained hamstring. Are there any short, moderately fast white guys who aren't described as "scrappy?" I should have used it in the Ryan Freel entry, too.
- Rockies RP Manny Corpas could be ready to return from the DL right after the All-Star break, which would coincide nicely with a potential Huston Street trade if you're planning to speculate on some saves.
- Though I'm not sure it means anything from a fantasy perspective, OF Alfonso Soriano might be done leading off for the Cubs.
See you tomorrow.
