The All-Star Game starters have been announced, and the Pedroia-over-Kinsler vote looks to be the biggest screw-up. Also, if someone had told me before the season that Tim Wakefield would be an All-Star ...
Who's off: Rays, Twins, White Sox, Indians, Mets, Cardinals, Brewers, Dodgers
First pitch: The Jays and Yankees play an AL matinee at 1:05 p.m. ET, while the NL has a pair of 7:05 starts. Here's the full schedule.
Pitcher to start: The weekend was solid, with Max Scherzer posting a decent effort Friday, John Lannan and Luke Hochevar giving us a Saturday split, and the underrated Nick Blackburn continuing his terrific pitching on Sunday. We're up to 48-49 on the season.
With a .500 record in our crosshairs, we'll go with Cubs rookie Randy Wells, who is somehow owned in just 10.3 percent of FOXSports.com leagues despite posting a 2.43 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP in 10 starts.
On to the news:
- Wells will be joined by 3B Aramis Ramirez, who gets reactivated tonight after missing two months with a shoulder injury. If you've been enjoying Jake Fox's production lately in your NL-only league, get ready for him to lose playing time.
- OF Josh Hamilton returns to the Rangers' lineup tonight, and 1B/strikeout king Chris Davis has been demoted to make room for him. Hank Blalock is expected to see most of the playing time at first base, and you have to think Hamilton will get his share of DH at bats to lessen his chances of getting hurt again in the outfield. If you own Marlon Byrd in an AL-only league, keep the faith.
- The Twins placed SP Kevin Slowey on the DL with a wrist injury, and recalled rookie Anthony Swarzak to replace him. Swarzak is expected to start Thursday, and we should know more today about the extent of Slowey's injury.
- Chien-Ming Wang is back on the DL for the Yankees, and will probably miss at least a month. With manager Joe Girardi saying that he wants to keep Phil Hughes in the bullpen, it appears that Thursday's starter will be either Sergio Mitre (3.26 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, 23 K/3 BB in Triple A) or underrated reliever Alfredo Aceves. This makes me angry - Wang might be a lost cause, and Joba Chamberlain has been awful lately. Hughes should start.
- The A's have acquired Scott Hairston from the Padres, and plan to start him in center field. He's got some pop in his bat, and isn't a bad AL-only option.
- After a couple of false alarms, Phillies OF Raul Ibanez is supposed to make a minor-league rehab appearance today. If all goes well, he'll be in the Phils' lineup Thursday or Friday.
- Still no news on Jays closer Scott Downs, who could be reactivated any day now. If you see him today or tomorrow, don't be too surprised. With that said, I can't find any news on him this morning.
- Giants SP Randy Johnson left Sunday's game with a shoulder strain, and we should know more about his prognosis today.
- The Royals have reactivated C John Buck. Woo!
- It's possible - not probable, but possible - that Pirates C Ryan Doumit could be reactivated by this weekend.
- Oliver Perez is listed as Wednesday's probable starter for the Mets. Can I get the over on 4.5 walks?
- In case you didn't notice over the weekend, 3B Edwin Encarnacion is back and playing for the Reds.
- Ervin Santana's comeback start on Friday was nothing to write home about.
- If you've been hoping for Jordan Schafer's return to Atlanta at some point this season, his wrist injury doesn't sound good.
- The AP reports that Padres 2B David Eckstein is day-to-day with a strained hamstring.
- The Orioles Web site reports that RP Chris Ray has returned to Baltimore to have his shoulder examined. All the wiseguys waiting for Ray to take over for George Sherrill should brace for disappointment.
- Marlins SP Ricky Nolasco is on fire, folks. I hope you bought low.
See you tomorrow.
