Here's a story quoting a bunch of sports psychologists about Red Sox DH David Ortiz, who is scheduled to visit an eye doctor today. I guess the mammoth, 302 1/2-foot homer he hit off the Pesky Pole on Saturday didn't qualify as a slump-buster.
Who's off: Orioles, Red Sox, Indians, Royals, Angels, Mariners, Nationals, Mets, Phillies, Brewers, Reds, Astros, Cubs, Dodgers
First pitch: The Tigers and White Sox start the American League schedule with the first game of their doubleheader at 2:05 p.m. ET, while the Rockies and Cardinals play an NL matinee 10 minutes later. Here's the full schedule.
Pitcher to start: Friday's Chad Gaudin pick was uninspired, but Max Scherzer helped us with five shutout innings on Saturday. Ubaldo Jimenez made another strong plea to increase his paltry 26.9 ownership percentage, and in a weird statistical quirk, Braves' rookie Tommy Hanson met our strikeout and WHIP requirements (see column at right) even though he allowed six earned runs in his big-league debut.
If you remember, I got frustrated recently when Paul Maholm gave up only one earned run but barely missed in the other categories, and I took that game as a loss because I stuck to the rules as written. So if you don't think I'm taking Hanson's outing as a win to even things out, you're crazy. We're up to 34-38 for the season.
Today, we'll take Atlanta's improving Kenshin Kawakami (3.7 percent owned) against the Pirates, and A's lefty Josh Outman (5 percent owned) against the Twins. In nine starts this season, Outman has yet to give up more than three runs.
On to the news:
- D'backs OF Justin Upton left Sunday's game with a shoulder injury. He's listed as day-to-day, and you shouldn't expect him to play tonight.
- Red Sox OF Jacoby Ellsbury might miss Tuesday's series opener against the Yankees with a shoulder injury of his own. We should know more about his status tomorrow. Also, the team's Web site reports that OF J.D. Drew (shoulder) should be back Tuesday after missing two games.
- Rangers closer Frank Francisco missed the weekend with shoulder tightness, and will probably rest for a few more days in an effort to avoid the DL.
- Joel Hanrahan has once again lost his closing duties with the Nationals, this time to Mike MacDougal. Before you buy your Nats jersey with MACDOUGAL on the back, remember that he has a history of control problems, and has walked nine batters in eight innings this season. With that said, if the manager says MacDougal is the closer, that means he is, and he's worth a pickup for as long as that lasts.
- Speaking of closers, Houston's Jose Valverde hopes to return from the DL this weekend.
- 3B Evan Longoria missed most of the weekend for the Rays, but he pinch-hit on Sunday. If I owned Longoria, I'd start him today. Then again, my dad said he "couldn't run at all" when he grounded to second base in his Sunday at bat.
- Not a bad return from the minors for Florida's Ricky Nolasco. He's owned in just 43.2 percent of FOXSports.com leagues. Buy low, people.
- If you read Jim Leyland's quotes in this article, it makes you think 1B Miguel Cabrera (hamstring) will get today off. In good Tigers news, Jeremy Bonderman will make his first start of the season in the second game of today's twinbill.
- Another sore shoulder? Pirates SS Jack Wilson has one, too, and he'll be evaluated by a doctor today.
- The Braves put 1B Casey Kotchman on the DL with a strained right calf. He could be back as soon as next Tuesday.
- Jays 3B Scott Rolen missed Sunday's game with a stiff back, according to the team's Web site. This sounds like a day-to-day thing.
- Orioles SS Cesar Izturis will miss 2-3 weeks after his emergency appendectomy on Friday. Replacement Robert Andino's minor league numbers show a little bit of pop and speed - take a look.
- Ian Stewart was 12-for-25 with four homers and 12 RBI last week for the Rockies, and he qualifies at 2B, 3B and OF. Get him if you can. Stewart's teammate, C Chris Iannetta, is expected to return from the DL on Tuesday, while rookie OF Carlos Gonzalez's playing time might come at the expense of Ryan Spilborghs.
- Is anyone besides me waiting for Ryan Rowland-Smith to rejoin the Mariners' rotation? I'm going to have to wait a little longer after RRS gave up 12 runs in a rehab start on Friday.
- The Dodgers put LHP Eric Milton on the DL with back tightness - please don't tell me this affects your fantasy team. With a bunch of off days this week, the Dodgers haven't announced a rotation replacement.
- Luke Hochevar is back in the Royals' rotation, and had a solid outing on Saturday.
- The juggernaut known as Vin Mazzaro is up to 13 2/3 scoreless innings for the A's. At this rate, he's on his way to the Hall of Fame.
- The Reds' Web site reports that 1B Joey Votto is "not likely to be ready" to come off the DL when eligible on June 14.
See you tomorrow.
