Morning Baseball Update: Sheets leaves early (again)

    Thursday, September 18, 2008, 03:30 AM [General]

Eleven days left, folks. I'm trying to chase down Derek Carty of The Hardball Times in our FOXSports.com experts league, but I'm not gonna make it, and I definitely can't keep up with his pace of 937 transactions per week. Should I be happy with second place, since I was something like sixth at midseason?

Who's off: Red Sox, Indians, Tigers, Rangers, Padres, Rockies

First pitch: The Dodgers and Pirates start the day in the NL at 12:35 p.m. ET, while the Brewers and Cubs play a Wrigley matinee at 2:20. Here's the full schedule.

Pitcher to start: David Purcey pitched pretty well through four innings last night, then fell off a cliff in the fifth. I think I'm done with Mr. Purcey for the season. Today, let's go back to the underrated and streaking Paul Maholm (15.4 percent owned), who's got a 2.90 ERA in his last 10 starts for the Pirates.

    On to the news:

    • Ben Sheets left last night's game after two innings with tightness in his forearm, and revealed later that he's been dealing with a bad elbow. If you read the quotes in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel story, Sheets status could be anywhere from "pitching again Tuesday" to "done for the season." If you own Sheets, wait one more day to see if there's any positive news. If you don't get it, waive him and pray he doesn't pitch a shutout next week. I'll make sure to add a note on him tomorrow, even if there's no news.
    • Rangers SS Michael Young, who's playing with a fracture in his right middle finger, aggravayed the injury Wednesday and left after the fourth inning. He's day-to-day.
    • Chone Figgins' injured elbow isn't healing well, and it sounds like the Angels might give him some rest (and play him at second base) over the final week and a half. He's definitely out today. Teammate Torii Hunter was scratched last night after getting hit in the face with a ball during BP, and the team's Web site says he's day-to-day.
    • Jays starter Shaun Marcum is going to have an MRI today, so we'll find out shortly if he'll be shut down for the season.
    • Unless you're a White Sox fan, don't get excited about Carlos Quentin's progress. He might be back for the playoffs, but for fantasy purposes the best you'll get is probably two games (if that).
    • The Rays are reportedly "very pleased" with B.J. Upton's progress, and he's "getting closer" to returning to the lineup. That does nothing for you, does it? Also, closer Troy Percival is apparently on a schedule that gives him an epidural shot in his back every five days; otherwise, he can't pitch. That sound you just heard was all Percival's fantasy owners throwing up as they read this.
    • I need to offer a mea culpa regarding my criticism of White Sox 3B Juan Uribe. He's not a long-term solution, but since taking over for Joe Crede, he's been great.
    • Austin Kearns, Dmitri Young, Jesus Flores, Ronnie Belliard - done, done, done and done for the Nats. I wonder if they still have enough players to fill out a lineup. If I had known about this when I drove past their stadium yesterday, I'd have offered to play right field.
    • Don't be fooled by Freddy Garcia's outing last night. Getting him would be like adding a ticking bomb to your fantasy rotation.
    • Though it's not fantasy-related, you've gotta see this photo of the Padres' rookies. I think Mike Harmon should wear the same outfit for Halloween.
    • Phil Hughes was OK in his return for the Yankees last night. Maybe next time they'll let him pitch enough innings to qualify for the win.
    • 2B Kaz Matsui and 3B Ty Wigginton were back in the lineup last night for the Astros.
    • Reds 3B Edwin Encarnacion was scratched last night with an injured left wrist. No word on his status.

    See you tomorrow.
