Plenty of things going on across the world of ToTT Sports, so let's jump in with both feet:
Horse Racing:
Starting in the US last Saturday, Rachel Alexandra's presence (plus rain) reduced the Gr-I Mother Goose to 3 entries and a public workout. The super filly responded by running by herself basically, taking over halfway and romping to 20+ length win in stakes record fashion to boot...
No doubt, the photographer wanted comparisons to Secretatriat to follow after this pic...
In any case, on a down note, her owner Jess Jackson, who purchased her after the Kentucky Oaks, has said that she will not participate in the Breeders Cup due to his dislike of "plastic surfaces", which "favor turf horses" and where dirt horses "struggle"... The BC will again be held in Santa Anita, same as last year, and this likely stems from his other champ, two time HOY Curlin, struggling to a fourth place finish in the Classic last year. Asked about a match against Zenyatta, Jackson stated that it would have be on a neutral ground, away from "plastic"... Too bad the likely the most popular horse in the US will miss the BC... She has now been moved to Saratoga for a summer campaign...
Speaking of Zenyatta, the champion mare is now 11-for-11 after easily defending her title in the Gr-I Vanity, even while carrying a whopping 129 lbs, putting on her typical late charge and powering her overmatched rivals through the stretch to win by 2-1/2...
Neither her nor Rachel have any challenges within their respective divisions and have all but sown up their divisional titles. If things continue at this pace, each will have a big say in Horse of the Year honors.... Too bad they will likely never race against each other. Her next race has been stated to be the Gr-II Clement Hirsh in Del Mar on August 9th.
Overseas, we start with the Gr-I Irish Derby, where Epsom Derby winner and likely favorite Sea the Stars was scratched due to heavy rains earlier in the weekend, leaving the race open for talented Fame and Glory (left) to romp...
... taking over down the stretch and running away with a 5+ length win. He is now 5 for 6 lifetime, his only defeat a second in the Epsom Derby.
And earlier in France, the Gr-I Grand Prix de Saint Cloud was run, and Spanish Moon, who had not raced since being nipped at the wire in the Dubai Sheema Classic, ran away with the race, running close to the leaders, then taking over with 2F to go for win...
Favorite and perennial runner-up Youmzain finished third... as should have been expected.
Also, Dar Re Mi won the Gr-I Pretty Polly Stakes in Ireland, which is also the first Breeder's Cup Challenge race in 2009. She now has earned a slot in the BC F&M Turf.
And in Japan, it was the end of their spring season with the Gr-I Takarazuka Kinen, where Dream Journey (green cap), their '06 2yo Champion, came rushing down the stretch, taking over with 200m to go an ran away with his first Gr-I since his juvenile season...
'08 3yo Champion and race favorite Deep Sky could not keep up and finished third in another frustrating race, having recently finished second to Vodka in the Gr-I Yasuda Kinen and again to Dream Journey in the Gr-II Sankei Osaka Hai. Things will pick up again in Japan come the fall.
In other international news, the career of '07-08 Australian Horse of the Year Weekend Hussler...
...might be over after he was diagnosed with a rare inflammatory condition. 'Hussler's has been out since February following an injury in the Australian Stakes and his third straight loss after starting his career 12 for 15... Truly a letdown for Aussie fans, as his connections had grand plans for him, which would have included attempts at all the major stakes Down Under along with an assault at several international races...
Tune in later in the week for a preview of this weekend's action, which include the Gr-I's United Nations, Suburban and Prioress on July 4, and the American Oaks and Triple Bend on the fifth, and the Gr-I Coral Eclipse Stakes in England on Saturday.
NY Mets
In typical fashion, it was an up and down week for the Mets, who neutralized Albert Pujols and took 3 of 4 from the NL Central leading Cardinals, then had their butts handed to them by the Yankees, who swept them at Citi Field. .. ending up with a 3 - 4 record, bringing their mark down to the .500 level.
Luckily, the Phillies continue to struggle and where only able to open up their lead to 2.5 games. The Mets welcom the Brewers to Citi Field for a 3-game set, leading off with newfound ace Fernando Nieve, he of the 3-0 / 1.31 ERA line, followed by Johan Santana. This will be followed by a makeup game against the Pirates, who whipped the Mets last time they played, and a critical 3 game set against the Phillies... As said before, the Mets are fielding a AAA roster on most nights, but they can make a serious move this week with their top pitchers going twice and the Phillies on deck... If they can somehow stay above water until the big leaguers come off the DL, they might still have a shot....
NY Giants
The voodoo doll took time off it's hectic schedule torturing the Mets in order to pay a visit to Giants minicamp, and helping OLB Michael Boley tear a hip flexor...
...which will lead to surgery and being out 8-10 weeks... This likely means Boley will miss training camp and not be ready until after the season starts, meaning he will be far behind in learning the Giants D systems and minimizing his impact this season.. This is a tough loss, as big things were expected from Boley, the team's first FA signing this year, and who was slotted to start WLB, leaving the slot open for talented but perenially injured Gerris Wilkinson and promising second year man Bryan Kehl to battle for the spot...
In other news, the team has signed rookies Ramses Barden (WR, 3rd round), Andre Brown (RB, 4th), Brett Bomar (QB, 5th) and CB DeAndre Wright (CB, 6th) to contracts...
