As with the US version, the European championships have little suspense in them. Most expected winners stood out clearly over their competition, and expect them to be rewarded as such. So without further ado, here are the ToTT Cartier Racing Award predictions:
Two Year Colt: Mastercraftsman - The irish colt finished the season a perfect 4-4, including two Gr-I wins, and should win easily. The early favorite for the English 2000 Guineas.
Two Year Old Filly: Rainbow View - The other 4-4 undefeated juvenile and Gr-I winner, she is the only one who should be discussed for the championship. In turn, the early fave for the English 1000 Guineas. Was actually bred in Kentucky, but races out of England.
Three Year Old Colt: Henrythenavigator - There will be strong support for '07 2yo Champ New Approach based on his strong year end finish, Raven's Pass big Breeder's Cup Classic win and Henry' having lost his last three. But Henry's earlier four Gr-I's cannot be matched by any other colt, he beat New Approach both times they raced and won 3 of 5 against Raven'. He is another Kentucky bred, but racing out of Aiden O'Brien's barn in Ireland.
Three Year Old Filly: Zarkava -The biggest slam dunk of all, as the undefeated French filly destroyed all others of the same sex, then saved the best for last when defeated all the boys in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.
Top Stayer: Yeats - Perhaps the only truly contested division, as the two-time defending Stayer champion will likely have some votes taken from him by Conduit after his big win in the BC Turf. But Yeats is still prime to score his third straight championship, as his record of 4 wins in 5 races, including 3 Gr-I's, still tops Conduit's 4 wins in 6 tries, with two Gr-I's. But the latter is still only 3yo, and should continue to garner great success in the years to come. Irish bred and raced, and a stablemate of Henrythenavigator.
Top Sprinter: Marchand d'Or - Presently riding a three race Gr-I streak, over tracks in England and France, this French racer has left no doubts he is top sprinter in the continent.
Top Older Horse: Duke of Marmalade - Not much debate here. Even after ending the year losing two straight, Duke still rattled off five straight Gr-I's and beat every other top challenger in Europe. This irish bred racer is also Henrythenavigator and Yeats's stablemater. Not a bad barn...
Horse of the Year: Zarkava - Much like the 3yo filly award, no doubt for HOY either. Going into the Arc, the championship was between her and Duke of Marmalade. And the crown jewel of her career was a resounding confirmation on her place at the top of Europe's racing scene. Could have gone down as an all time great (maybe she still will) with another year of racing, but has since been retired and sent to breeding duty.
