I will use this space to break down my opinions on each transaction by the Red Sox:
First, re-signing Mike Timlin. HUGE! This guy is the best set-up man when he is used correctly. He pitched in 81 games last year, 4 more than the previous year. Let's be frank - we NEED him. This is great. He will be huge for them, let's just use him wisely!
Next, we "acquired pitchers Josh Beckett and
Guillermo Mota and third baseman Mike Lowell from the Florida Marlins
for infielder Hanley Ramirez and pitchers Anibal Sanchez, Jesus Delgado
and Harvey Garcia" (ESPN.com). I'm swaying both ways on this one. I am very excited about the prospect of getiing a World Series MVP who is only 25 years old (same as Jon Papelbon). Mike Lowell should bounce back, plus he's a Gold Glover so we shouldn't be too bad off even if his offense stays the same, which it really shouldn't. And Mota, I just don't know so I have no opinion, but I guess his stats should take care of itself. Hanley Ramirez has been highly touted but I need to see him with my own eyes to determine for myself, and plus his minor league numbers aren't good. But then again, Kevin Youkilis has much better Major League numbers than minor league numbers so anything is possible. Time will tell if this deal is good. The minor deal they made is just that - minor. This is just an arm we didn't have already so it's a wash.
