Maybe it's a good thing Steve Fisher doesn't have much hair left on the top of his head.
I guess that's what coaching college basketball - if not pure genetics and age - can do to a man.
But Fisher certainly won't be growing any hair back knowing Lorrenzo Wade's future at San Diego State is completely uncertain.
I mean, what coach wouldn't lose his hair (and/or sleep) with his leading scorer from last year sidelined for an indefinite amount of time?
That's what Wade has caused Fisher to consider after being hit with a felony charge for stealing a woman's television last week.
"I have heard his side of the story," Fisher offered. "I know that he pleaded not guilty but it's something that I take very seriously. Not only am I disappointed, I'm angry."
Wade, a First Team All-Mountain West selection last year and a preseason All-MWC team pick this year, turned himself in to the police after a woman in the same apartment complex accused him of intruding and taking her TV.
Wade's coaches, however, have never had a problem with him before.
"To my knowledge he's never had any difficulties or run-ins with the law," Fisher said.
It's the reason why Wade, who posted a team-high 14.8 points per game as a junior in 2007-08, has insisted, along with his attorney Richard Muir, that he did not take the woman's television but rather knocked on her door to see if she could move her car.
Still, after posting bail and pleading not guilty to first-degree burglary, Wade could face up to six years in prison if he's convicted.
"He should not have walked into the apartment. He had not been invited. He was wrong in doing that," Muir admitted. "He's a good kid. He's never been in trouble before. We hope to resolve this favorably and get him back into the basketball program, if everyone has their ducks in order."
"I constantly preach, 'Don't let this be you. Don't let this be bulletin board material where they're talking about you,"' Fisher added. "It's distasteful."
Wade's situation speaks to the rest of Fisher's team as the Aztecs look to begin the 2008-09 season on the right foot rather than the wrong one.
And if Fisher still has some hair left, he'd appreciate that, too.
