The Terrell Owens saga is just way too out of proportion now. Senator Arlen Specter, Republican Senator for Pennsylvania, recently said that the Eagles had treated T.O. unfairly. He even went as far as considering the situation one of antitrust. Thus, 'Cry Baby T.O.' now not only has a bad agent but also a bad advocate.
As most of the sports fan around the nation, I'm tired of T.O. getting so much attention from sports press. Yet, it's nauseating for government officials to add more fire to Owens' search for attention. Government officials are elected to solve problems for all of us who pay taxes and expect in return certain basic, reasonable services. No government official should become an advocate for professional athletes who want to make exorbitant amounts of money for playing a sport.
Government officials staying away from issues in professional sports should be something logical. People should not even make such requests. Senators, representatives and everyone else in the government should never get involved in things dealing with professional sport franchises and egocentric athletes. Nonetheless, senators and representatives appear to be as much camera-huggers as those egocentric athletes damaging the sports we all love. Therefore, they can't stay on the bench when asked about a professional athlete. I don't even want to think of what Bush would do if asked about T.O.'s situation. Perhaps he would declare war against the Philadelphia Eagles and provide Andy Reid 48 hours to leave the team before our armed forces attack.
Going back to Specter, if he believes the Eagles treated T.O. unfairly or improperly, then he should criticize Drew Rosenhaus (Owens' agent.) Rosenhaus is the only one to blame for all the mess that has been created between Owens and the Eagles. He made T.O. believe that he was way too underpaid, that he was such a great player that the Eagles should erect a statute of him in front of Lincoln Financial Field.
There are many great players in the NFL who are underpaid. For instance, Ronde Barber is one of the best Corner Backs in the NFL. I believe the Buccaneers are not paying him what he deserves. Nonetheless, Ronde plays even better every time he steps into the field. Such actions is what will make Ronde receive more money whenever his contract is up, if not from the Buccaneers themselves then from some other team that will understand what they're getting with Ronde. Perhaps if T.O. and Rosenhaus acted maturely and responsibly, the Eagles would have paid them an extravagant amount of money in later negotiations.
Specter's comments are as irresponsible as Rosenhaus' representation of Terrell Owens. It's about time they all just shut their mouths and move on. We, as sports fan, would appreciate that a lot. Wouldn't we?
