With the Seattle Seahawks dismantling the Philadelphia Eagles last night, prognostics about the Seahawks playing against the Colts on Super Bowl XL are developing. To those prognosticators I say not so fast.
The Seahawks are having a great season. Part of that success is due to QB Matt Hasslebeck who has found his groove. His QB rate is currently 88.8 and has 14 TD this season. Yet, the pillar of this team has a name, Shaun Alexander. Alexander has currently run for over 1,000 and has 20 TDs. With a RB like that even the Saints or the Lions could be in contention for the Super Bowl.
The Seahawks are 9-2, but their two loses are against teams that are not powerhouses per se. The first lost was against Jacksonville and the other against the Redskins. A team that is focused on winning the Super Bowl will not lose against those two teams. Furthermore, they played that close game against the Giants, which they would have lost if the so called kicker named Feely would have made those important field goals. The Seahawks have talent, but they're luckier than anything.
As for the Colts, we can't deny they're having a magnificent season. They currently have a record of 12-0; a great young and, believe it or not, still improving QB in Peyton Manning protected by a great offensive line; great and dangerous receivers; a great RB in 'The Edge'; and a great defense. What they don't have is an aggressive coach that will lead them to the 'promised land.' Tony Dungy is not coach enough to get a great team as the 2005 Colts to the Super Bowl.
We've seen this before in Tampa Bay. A team with a dominant defense and a great offense, but doesn't get a Super Bowl ring. They didn't even make it to the Super Bowl. In comes Gruden, who I must admit isn't a mastermind either but at least is aggressive, and takes the same team Dungy had. Gruden made no personnel changes to Dungy's team. The only thing he changed was the player's mindset. The result was a Super Bowl ring. So why couldn't Dungy do the same thing? Because he's a great coach but doesn't play aggressively when he needs to.
Since everyone is into prognosticating these days, here is my forecast. I see Seattle barely making it to the Super Bowl after being scared by a very good Panthers team. The Colts might end up being undefeated during the regular season, but will not make it to the Super Bowl. If I miss my forecast, then I'll do as every weather forecaster and blame it on uncontrollable factors that made me miss the forecast.
