It's totally weird how things change in the NFL in just one second. Just last week everyone was talking about the Colts. The word in the street was about their record now being 13-1 and whether they'll be in the Super Bowl or not. Today, the word in the street is more somber. Today, we're reminded that the NFL is more than just football players in their pursuit of a Super Bowl ring.
Unfortunately, Tony Dungy (Indianapolis Colts Head Coach) learned today that his 18-year-old son passed away. This is certainly tough news for any parent to learn. Yet, when news like that one hit an extraordinary person as Coach Dungy then the news are even worse. Although I've never met Dungy or his family, I've learned a lot about him as a fan of the Buccaneers, team he used to coach before the Colts.
Coach Dungy has been a moral example for everyone in the Tampa Bay area. He always coached the Buccaneers with dignity. Dungy was always respectful to the media and all his players. But perhaps most importantly, Dungy always worked in several projects to benefit communities in Tampa Bay. Thus, to learn that someone as Dungy received the saddest of news about one of his children and during the Christmas season is just upsetting.
There are no words to express how surprised I was when I read that James Dungy was found dead at the early age of 18 years. When you learn of such news everything else becomes secondary. The Colts' season record is not a priority right now. Whether they make it to the Super Bowl or not is not a priority either. The priority now is Coach Dungy and his family.
There's no way to explain why sad things happen to good people. But when sad things happen to good people we should always show our solidarity to them. That's why my prayers go out to Tony Dungy, his wife, and his children. I exhort you to do the same.
