SHOULD MARCUS VICK GET AN NFL CONTRACT?

Friday, January 6, 2006, 06:42 PM EST [Marcus Vick, VT, NFL]

Today, the Virginia Tech Hokies decided to part ways with Marcus Vick.  Although Marcus had a decent record inside the football field, VT coaches and administrators decided that his record outside the football field was just too much to handle.

Marcus Vick's storyline as a football player has always been accompanied with constant legal problems.  He was arrested with marijuana.  Afterwards, he faced accusations of serving alcohol to minors.  The police also stopped him for speeding and driving with a revoked or suspended license.  Yet, what really made VT kicked Marcus out of the football team was the way he conducted himself during the Gator Bowl.

On January 2nd, Marcus stepped on the left calf of Louisville's defensive end Elvis Dumervil.  He claimed that he did it inadvertently, but the repetitions show that he stepped on Dumervil's calf with the apparent intention of hurting him.  After the incident, Vick said that he apologized to Louisville's defensive end, which Dumervil denied.

So Marcus Vick now could transfer to a Division I-AA school and play for their football team.  Or he could join his brother Michael Vick in the NFL.  Most probably Marcus Vick will choose the latter path.  But my question to you, reader, is ... should an NFL GM reward such a controversial player as Marcus Vick with a contract for million of dollars?  Is Marcus Vick's talent greater than the liability he could become for any NFL team?  The only thing I'm sure of is that Marcus Vick is not even close to his brother Michael, at least as a football player.
