    Lance: Ironman or Superman?

Thursday, December 1, 2005, 07:05 AM EST [Lance Armstrong, Ironman, tria]

I recently read a headline asking something in the nature of whether Lance Armstrong could win the Ironman competition.  My brain's neurons began pedaling as fast as Lance on the seven Tour de France events he has won.  I couldn't believe that someone will even consider posing this question.  Yet, for some weird reason, I began to ponder how would Lance perform in an Ironman competition.

Definitely, he will be great on the 112 miles part of the race.  That's a lot of miles to pedal!!  But cycling in the Ironman competition would be the easiest thing for Lance.  He used to pedal while receiving treatment for cancer.  After beating cancer, he came back to win the Tour de France races against totally healthy men.  Instead of sipping champagne just on the last leg of the Tour de France, Lance could drink champagne throughout the 112 miles of the Ironman race.

The problem, however, is that Lance would not have his most loyal friend, his bike, throughout the competition.  Remember, competitors in the Ironman have to swim 2.4 miles, run 26.2 miles, and bike 112 miles.  Lance without his bike is as Superman confronting kryptonite.  Although the biking part of the Ironman competition is known as the toughest part of the race, the other two stages of the triathlon would be the toughest ones.

Lance Armstrong is, without question, the closest human representation of Superman we will ever know.  Not many athletes could overcome cancer as he did.  Besides that, not many athletes, if any, could be as dominant in its sport as Lance Armstrong.  You think Jordan was dominant in the NBA?  Think of Lance winning SEVEN Tours de France ... THAT'S dominating a sport.

However, Lance is more than a great athlete.  He continuously works in pro of good causes, especially for economical assistant for cancer patients.  Armstrong's effort in favor of those who don't have the athletic talent, fame, and fortune he has been blessed with is precisely what makes me consider Lance Armstrong as the human representation of Superman.

The only way to answer whether Lance Armstrong could win the Ironman triathlon is why would he have to.  He has already proven what he is capable of and that is more than enough.
