Former Oklahoma State basketball coach Eddie Sutton makes his return to the hardwood by accepting an interim coaching job at the University of San Fransisco. Coach Sutton has 798 victories under his belt. He says he set a selfish goal of 800 or more victories during his career. He would have reached that already, but he fell short when he had his alcohol related auto accident 2 years ago at OSU. In which forced him into retirement. Coach Sutton regrets his actions and admits he did not want to leave on those terms. Eddie Sutton says he has not ruled the possibility of returning next year. He could be the only coach to take 5 teams to the NCAA Tournament, but not this year he implies. It would take this team a while longer if he gets the opportunity to do so.
Coach Sutton has been battling alcoholism in the past, he says he has not had a drink in a long time and doesn't plan to either. Coach Sutton admits he wants to reach his goal of 800 games, but he also admits that he still has the desire and drive to keep coaching. At age 71he can still motivate players to win. Since he's left Oklahoma State, his son Sean Sutton has had 1 dissapointing season and is on the verge of another. This could make 2 years in a row that Oklahoma State doesn't make it to the big dance. If Joe Paterno and Bobby Bowden can still coach at their age, then so can Eddie Sutton.
Some people are bashing Coach Sutton for taking this job. They say that since he has made a couple mistakes, that he doesn't deserve another chance. I've got one thing to say to those people. LOOK IN THE MIRROR. No one is perfect. Everyone makes mistakes and gets more chances. For instance look at the U.S. Senate, how many of the senators in Washington D.C. have either had DUI's, killed women in coverups, or who knows what else. They are still running our country on second and third chances.
Eddie Sutton is focused on having alcohol and drug awareness programs on college campuses throughout the United States. He is hoping to get through to students about the circumstances that can arise from alcohol and drugs, and so that maybe students won't make the same mistakes he did. I applaud Eddie Sutton for taking this job. He is a great coach, a good person and a class act. Good luck in San Fransisco coach!
