    PLAYING KENO IN PROVIDENCE

Thursday, May 15, 2008, 10:34 AM EST [Providence]

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Keno Davis honestly has no clue about his new group of players - and he won't have any more insight until school starts in September.

Because of the NCAA's rule that coaches are not allowed to work with their players, Davis and numerous other coaches who changed jobs have to play the waiting game.

Davis has been shuttling back and forth between Iowa and Providence and actually sold and bought a house on the same day (it took him just eight days to sell his house).

What Davis does know about his team is that he needs a healthy Sharaud Curry next season.

Curry basically missed the entire season with a foot injury.

``I'm hoping he'll be OK in a couple months," Davis said. ``It worries me not only because he's our point guard, but he's been out the entire year."

Davis said he's got one scholarship available since Dwain Williams decided to transfer, but he may hold onto it if he can't get an impact player - and that would mean that the Friars will have six scholarships for the Class of 2009.

Davis brought two of his assistant coaches with him from Drake - Chris and Rodell Davis (no relation) - and he'll likely hire an east coast guy in the next week.

Davis also said he expects to play an up-tempo style at Providence. ``I've thought about it a lot," he said. "It's tough to say until I get them on the court, but I think we'll get up and down, pressure defense and we'll spread the court. People who saw us play at Drake will see a lot of that at Providence."

Except Davis will have far more athletic players than he had in the Missouri Valley - other than Leonard Houston.

JARVIS IN DRIVERS' SEAT FOR FAU

Look for Mike Jarvis to get back into coaching.

Sources indicate that the former St. John's and George Washington head coach, who lives just miles away from the Florida Atlantic campus, is the front-runner to get the job - and it could happen as soon as today.

Jarvis met with the administration earlier this week.

    BUCKNELL STILL SEARCHING

The front-runner for the Bucknell opening to replace Pat Flannery appears to be former Bucknell player and current Virginia assistant Bill Courtney.

    GRAMBLING HIRES DUCKETT

Former South Carolina assistant Rick Duckett is expected to be announced as the new Grambling State coach later today.

Duckett, 50, has spent the past seven years under Dave Odom at South Carolina. He was also the head coach at Winston Salem State for three years, where he won two CIAA championships and compiled a 73-19 record.

``I'm excited about this opportunity," Duckett told FOXSports.com. "Sometimes you get to a place and need a challenge."

``This is a unique situation," he added. "Grambling has such a great reputation in football back to the days of Eddie Robinson. The culture needs to be changed with regards to basketball."

Duckett, was also the head coach at Fayetteville State from 1994-98. He replaces Larry Wright, who was fired on April 1 after nine seasons and an 88-161 mark.

RANDOM NOTES: Oregon wing Drew Viney will transfer to Loyola Marymount. ... Bryant University head coach Max Good has a loaded schedule in the program's first season in the D-1 ranks: He'll go on the road and play UConn, Boston College, Providence, Iowa, Maryland and Rutgers. Good is 131-86 in seven years at Bryant and is also known for his success in the prep ranks, where he was 270-25 in a decade at Maine Central Institute. Good is being pursued by Loyola Marymount coach Bill Bayno for an assistant job on the west coast and he'll take a trip out to California before he makes a decision. ... Former Loyola Marymount assistant Brian Priebe is headed to Montana State. Brad Huse also hired Temesghen Starr out of Marshalltown Community College. ... Here's a random one, but Boston Celtics boss Danny Ainge now has six grand-children after his oldest daughter gave birth just hours before Wednesday night's victory. It's crazy because Ainge is just 49 years old.
