    K-STATE COACH QUIETING SKEPTICS

Thursday, January 31, 2008, 09:36 AM EST [Kansas State]

I doubt anyone is questioning Frank Martin now.

The Kansas State first-year head coach just led the Wildcats to their first win against Kansas in 25 tries.

When he got the job, everyone wondered whether he was qualified or whether he was just given the opportunity because, well, that would ensure that everyone stayed and prized freshman Michael Beasley arrived in Manhattan.

Martin, after an early stretch in which Bill Walker was injured and his freshman were growing up, has now led the Wildcats to a 5-0 record in the Big 12 - which puts them in sole possession of first place.

Martin was a former high school coach down in Miami. An assistant at Northeastern before joining Bob Huggins at Cincinnati and then following him to Kansas State.

Now he's proving that he can coach and the K-State players are proving they are more than just the Michael Beasley and Bill Walker show.

Freshman guard Jacob Pullen went for a career-high 20 points and has done a much better job taking care of the ball lately - with 24 assists and just five turnovers in the team's six-game winning streak.

    SAN DIEGO GETS SIGNATURE WINS

First-year San Diego coach Bill Grier is ecstatic that his team has wins at Kentucky and against nationally ranked Saint Mary's on its resume.

However, he'd like to see his team get up for every game.

"They get up for what they perceive as the big games in their minds, but they don't seem to play with the same fire every game," Grier said. "You don't get bonus points for the Kentucky game. Every game counts the same."

The Toreros are just 11-11 overall, but 4-1 in West Coast Conference play after the upset against Saint Mary's earlier this week.

    NIGHTLIGHTS:

    - West Virginia coach Bob Huggins was thumped by his old school, Cincinnati, last night. The Bearcats defeated Huggins' new team, 62-39, in Morgantown.

    - Memphis got past arguably its biggest non-conference step with an 89-77 road win at Houston. Chris Douglas-Roberts scored 30 points in the victory.

    - Texas A&M got a nice performance from Josh Carter in a 80-63 win over No. 10 Texas. Carter had 19 points and 10 boards.
