Isiah Thomas’ top recruit will miss the first semester.
According to multiple sources, Dominique Ferguson – a consensus Top 100 player who signed with Florida International last year – will sit out the first semester due to academics.
Sources said that Ferguson, who was ranked 58th in the nation by Scout.com, is expected to be eligible after the conclusion of the first semester.
The 6-foot-8, 210-pound Ferguson is from Indianapolis and attended Hargrave Military Academy (Va.) last season.
He is the centerpiece of Thomas’ rebuilding project down at FIU. The Panthers were 7-25 last season – his first as head coach.
Thomas and his staff also brought in four other new faces – freshmen Phil Taylor and Richaud Pack and junior college transfers Eric Frederick and DeJuan Wright.
How is it possible for an incoming freshman to be ineligible for one semester? I've been a raving basketball nut since I was a teenager (around 25 years or so). I remember when Prop 48 was introduced. I know that enrolled students can be inelgible for 1 semester, but I've never heard of a freshman being ineligible for 1 semester. While this isn't to say it's not possible - I'd love to know how it's possible? Thanks.
