While I was watching West Virginia last night, it occurred to me that the Mountaineers have the most suspect point guard situation of any team in the Top 10.
It's difficult to reel off four consecutive wins in March without a high-level floor leader, never mind six straight to win the national title.
With that said, I figured I'd rate the point guard situation of those who are ranked in the Top 10 in either poll this week.
There's a reason why most of these teams have had success this season. The majority have quality point guards.
1. Sherron, Collins, Kansas: The next two guys on this list may be more talented, but I'll take this guy over both due to his toughness and experience.
2. John Wall, Kentucky: He's just a freshman, but he has shown the propensity to make plays with the game on the line – and is a more natural floor leader than the next guy on this list.
3. Evan Turner, Ohio State: While I feel as though he is the frontrunner for Player of the Year honors, he's still not a natural point guard.
4. Jon Scheyer, Duke: Not a lot of flash to his game, but he makes quality decisions and can also make shots – from all over the court. He's also a senior.
5. Corey Fisher, Villanova: He's been pretty consistent the last 15 games or so and he's a guy who has toughness, can get into the lane and also make shots from deep.
6. Denis Clemente, Kansas State: He has done a nice job taking care of the ball, has shown good leadership skills and can also put the ball in the basket.
7. Brandon Triche/Scoop Jardine, Syracuse: It's a two-headed monster with the freshman, Triche, and Jardine, who has a 2.3-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio. The duo combine for 16.7 points and 7.8 assists per game.
8. Shelvin Mack, Butler: He's the most improved player on the Bulldogs this season and doesn't get near the credit he deserves.
9. Chris Wright, Georgetown: He's an enigma. When he's good, he's very good – but there is too much inconsistency.
10. Lewis Jackson/Keaton Grant/Kelsey Barlow: Jackson missed the first 19 games due to a foot injury and is still working his way back. Grant is a combo guard, and Barlow is just a freshman.
11. Dairese Gary, New Mexico: Who? Gary is a stocky junior who runs the Lobos. He's strong and athletic and has a 2.27-to-1 A/T ratio, though he isn't much of a threat to score from the perimeter.
12. Darryl "Truck" Bryant/Joe Mazzulla, West Virginia: Bryant doesn’t necessarily make it easier for his teammates, and Mazzulla is a shell of himself due to the injuries.
