I'm heading to UConn this afternoon to catch practice with the new-look Huskies, who lost Hasheem Thabeet, Jeff Adrien and A.J. Price, yet remain a legitimate Final Four contender.
There were plenty of scrimmages held this past weekend, and a couple of the most intriguing were Vanderbilt hosting North Carolina and Georgia Tech vs. Western Kentucky.
Vanderbilt coach Kevin Stallings confirmed to FOXSports.com that his standout big man, A.J. Ogilvy, didn't play due to a concussion.
"We anticipate that he'll be back on Tuesday," Stallings said.
Coaches are not allowed to comment on the score and players' statistics on scrimmages, but Stallings said that he was happy with his team's overall play.
"It was a good starting point, and it's good to figure out where you're at and what you need to work on," Stallings said.
Western Kentucky coach Ken McDonald was impressed with Georgia Tech freshman big man Derrick Favors.
"He's going to keep getting better," McDonald said of the Yellow Jackets' center. "He's physical and plays hard. I love the kid. I'm a huge Derrick Favors fan."
McDonald also said that fellow freshman Mfon Udofia played well for Georgia Tech. Yellow Jackets starting point guard Iman Shumpert sat out with a hamstring injury, and Udofia ran the team.
"He's tough as nails," McDonald said. "He impressed me the most."
McDonald said it was a matchup of two athletic, physical teams.
The Hilltoppers have the frontrunner for the Sun Belt Player of the Year in senior scoring guard A.J. Slaughter, who will start alongside point guard Anthony Sally in the backcourt.
"A.J. is legit," McDonald said. "He's a worker, too. He's a scorer who has confidence now. He can shoot the three, get to the rim and score coming off screens."
Up front, look for McDonald to go with 6-foot-5 junior Sergio Kerusch, tough undersized power forward Steffphon Pettigrew and talented big man Jeremy Evans. Cliff Dixon, Kevin Durant's half-brother, should be the first big man off the bench.
RANDOM NOTES: Saint Louis has lost junior guard Paul Eckerle for the season with a knee injury. ... Oral Roberts freshman guard Hunter McClintock will miss the season with a torn ACL in his right knee.
