I left Akron early this morning, stopped off to see my daughter at camp, took the puppy for a run and then headed out to Adam Finkelstein's New England Elite 75 camp for the afternoon.
I got there on the early end to catch BABC's young team – led by young kids Michael Carter-Williams, Noel Nerlens, Dominique Bull and Egi Gjikondi – trounce a team from the Netherlands.
Nate Lubick and Naadir Tharpe both sat out the Top 75 with ankle injuries, but both showed up to support the local scene. Andre Drummond has re-classified back in the Class of 2012 and the Hartford big man is going to be tough for anyone to get out of the state.
Another young big man who will hit the national scene is Kaleb Tarcewski, who is a 6-foot-11 rising sophomore from New Hampshire who is headed to St. Mark’s – where he will play with Lubick, Eastern Invitational MVP Melsahn Basabe and Erik Murphy’s younger brother, Alex.
Tomorrow I'm heading out to Springfield for the First Eight Basketball event that will include Grassroots Canada, New England Playaz, Mass Rivals, Connecticut Basketball Club, New Heights, Florida Rams, Expressions and Team Philly.
Anyway, I spoke with Chris Coleman earlier today and he confirmed that he in, indeed, committed to Florida International.
"I went down for their team camp and met with the coaches," said the 6-foot-10, 260-pound Buffalo native. "He (Isiah Thomas) played and coached in the NBA. He knows what it takes to get there."
Coleman's AAU coach, Don Marsh, had told one reporter that his standout big man – who has opened plenty of eyes in the coaching community with his play thus far in Philadelphia – was not committed to FIU.
"I am committed," Coleman reiterated.
RANDOM NOTES: Arkansas coach John Pelphrey has dismissed Jason Henry from the team. According to sources, Henry wasn't exactly a low-maintenance player – but someone will take a chance on him due to his potential. ... The Razorbacks got good news when freshman Marshawn Powell was recently cleared by the NCAA. … New Seattle University coach Cameron Dollar picked up former Washington signee Charles Garcia, who didn’t qualify to play for the Huskies.
