I set up a twitter account prior to the NCAA
tournament (http://twitter.com/goodmanonfox
if anyone cares), but I still haven't completely figured out why the craze has
swept America.
Dwight Howard was talking to several of us after the Magic victory the other
night about it. The guy has 16,286 followers - and doesn't give a whole lot of
insight (this morning it was "off to shootaround. hit yall later peacceeeee". Then again, it's difficult to give insight when you only have 140
characters of space.
There are several college coaches in the Twitter War, but none have taken it to
the level of new Kentucky coach John Calipari and Indiana head man Tom Crean (who happen to be close friends).
Calipari, who has 17,063 followers on his UKCoachCalipari account, has posted
81 updates since he began on April 23.
It seems that about half of them are telling his followers to "read a chapter or 2 when you wake up and b4 u go 2 bed. Read what interests u and it will make u wiser."
TomCrean has 4,300 followers, but he's been even more active with his posts -
177 of them since April 16.
Here are other coaches who are Twittering:
JeffCapel (Oklahoma coach Jeff Capel) - just started, has updated five times
and has 16 followers; Needs to pick things up
JoshPastner (Memphis coach Josh Pastner) - A lackluster 13 followers since he
began on April 30;
CoachReveno (Portland coach Eric Reveno) - 10 updates and 23 followers
SCUHoops (Santa Clara's Kerry Keating) - 55 followers and 61 updates for the
tech-savvy coach
CoachBrucePearl (Tennessee's Bruce Pearl) - Only seven updates, but a valid
excuse - recently got engaged
DJHerd (Marshall's Donnie Jones) - Just 11 followers and seven updates. Where
are those rabid Thundering Herd fans?
MasonCoachL (George Mason's Jim Larranaga) - The elder statesman of the
twittering coaches. Just started it up, has 10 updates already and 76
followers.
Yours truly has just 245 followers and I've only updated 30 times. I just have
to make sure the soon-to-be 60-year-old Larranaga doesn't catch me.
Let me know if I missed any college coaches twittering.
EX-KANSAS FORWARD LOOKING AT PAIR
Quintrell Thomas, who played sparingly at Kansas this past season, has targeted two schools -
according to a source close to the situation.
The New Jersey native, who averaged 1.5 points, is looking at UNLV
and St. Joe's.
His former teammate, Tyrone Appleton, who has just one year left of
eligibility, is likely headed to Southern
Indiana.
RANDOM NOTES: It's been widely reported that Birmingham Parker (Ala.) point guard Eric Bledsoe has chosen Kentucky over Memphis. ... Seton Hall has locked in a
home-and-home series with UMass. ... TCU has hired Cody Hopkins of Indian Hills
as its director of basketball operations. ... Davidson has added Iowa State transfer Clinton Mann. ... DeShawn Painter, who parted ways with Florida, is now looking at Virginia Tech, N.C. State, Maryland and Marquette. ... J.R. Smith's younger brother, Chris, has transferred from Manhattan and will walk-on at Louisville. ... Jeremy Parnell, who played four years of

Rebels, signed a free agent deal with the New Orleans Saints. ... Apparently, Hawaii's Roderick Flemings didn't fill out the NBA
paperwork correctly to declare for the NBA Draft and will return to the
Rainbows for his senior season. "In an effort to be evaluated by NBA
teams, I intended to submit my name for the 2009 NBA draft," Flemings said in a
statement. "I expressed my intentions to the NBA in writing, however, the
process was not completed and I will not be entering the draft this season. I
will return for my senior year at UH to work on my game for the 2010 NBA
draft. With our new recruits and the
returning players, we have a chance to be a very good team and I believe my
draft prospects will only improve." ... Mid-Majority's Kyle Whelliston traveled
a ridiculous 26,514 miles this year while attending 109 Division 1 games.
