Kentucky fans aren't the only ones uncertain whether Billy
Gillispie is the right man for the job in Lexington.
After a disappointing season in which Gillispie led the Wildcats to an NIT
berth and also had his share of off-court issues, UK athletic director Mitch
Barnhart has a major decision to make this week whether to keep the second-year
coach or cut ties.
According to sources close to the situation, Barnhart is leaning towards making
a move - which could come shortly after Kentucky's season ends in the NIT.
The Wildcats play Creighton Monday.
The fan support has swayed for Gillispie after an underachieving campaign in
which the team - which has arguably two of the top 15 players in the nation -
didn't even make the NCAA tournament.
Sources indicate that Kentucky would make a run at Michigan State's Tom Izzo
and Villanova's Jay Wright if Gillispie is forced out.
Wright, along with guys like Florida's Billy Donovan and Texas' Rick Barnes,
spurned interest from Kentucky the last time around prior to Gillispie's
hiring.
VIRGINIA FOCUS ON TUBBY
Sources told FOXSports.com that Virginia will make a strong push for Minnesota
coach Tubby Smith.
Virginia athletic director Craig Littlepage recently parted ways with Dave
Leitao and has targeted Smith - who was also pursued prior to Leitao being
hired four years ago.
If the Cavs can't pull Smith from Minnesota, other names we're hearing include
Oklahoma's Jeff Capel, Xavier's Sean Miller and Oregon State coach Craig
Robinson.
Robinson is interesting not only because of the way he has quickly turned
around a Beavers program that was winless in the Pac-10 a year ago - but also
due to the fact that the powerful donors at Virginia would be intrigued by the
fact he's the brother-in-law of President Barack Obama.
HIGH POINT CONSIDERING FOUR
Sources indicate that Wake Forest assistant Pat Kelsey is the front-runner
among four candidates that High Point is considering.
The others are Virginia Tech assistant Ryan Odom, Scott Cherry of South
Carolina and G.G. Smith of Loyola (Md.). Smith's father, Tubby, went to High
Point.
TENNESSEE STATE
Three guys in the mix, according to sources, for Tennessee State are John
Cooper, Michigan assistant and former Penn State head coach Jerry Dunn and
ex-South Florida head man Robert McCallum.
MORE NUGGETS: A couple of guys in
the mix at Appalachian State, sources tell us, include Charlotte Bobcats
director of player personnel and ex-Appalachian State coach Buzz Peterson, Wake
Forest assistant Mike Muse and Davidson assistant Matt Matheny. We're hearing
it's Peterson's job to turn down ... As we've mentioned, USC assistant Bob Cantu,
Cal assistant Greg Gottlieb and ASU assistant Scott Pera are in the fold at Cal
Poly to replace Kevin Bromley. ... Elon has been turned down by Buzz Peterson and
North Carolina assistant C.B. McGrath. ... Two names we're hearing for N.C
Central are Appalachian State assistant Richard Morgan and NCCU assistant and
former player Guelle Moten. ... Not much news on Boston University other than the
fact that the AD, Mike Lynch, has opted to hire Dan Parker & Associates - a
ridiculous move for a mid-major athletic director since he'll likely land an
assistant coach.
